3680 is Xeon version of 980x so it should work but they may need to update micro code to detect properly.

Oh crap.. now I just had some issue with SZ2Z that I've never seen before after the PC went to sleep (S1 not S3).. PC would not come out of sleep, so I reset, but then could not boot - BIOS kept giving an error message about resetting CPU or RAM, and in the end I had to reset cmos to be able to boot to windows. Damn **** yo? I never used to have these issues..  maybe I'll go right back to SZ2R where I had higher clocks and did not have a single freeze or BSOD for about 9 months, then I 'upgraded' the BIOS early this year and everything turned to custard since then! Same deal with graphics drivers.. fine up to 186.18, but nothing but problems ever since.
bah!

i am getting freeze ups too and its ridiculous!!!
The funny thing is i couldnt even update to 49.
Damn BIOS during boot and loading Caldera just freezes!!!!
will try to step back to prior to 44

I am using i7 950 CPU

Caldera locking up is probably due to problems mapping drives to your devices, set any SATA controllers to IDE mode and disable any that aren't necessary, like Jmicron controller, firewire, etc.

Yeah, just temporary til you update BIOS, disable and change the settings in the BIOS so that Caldera doesn't stall on you while trying to map device drivers.

glad it worked for ya

ya S61J is the last stable BIOS for me and what I would recommend for anyone not running a Gulftown 6-core CPU.  The 44 and 49 BIOS have problems with S3 resume CL latency, Performance/Turbo/whatever mode and memory dividers above 1600MHz.

Same problems persist on this release, I'll be sticking with S61J for the 760:

Problem #1
PCIe x16 Slot #2 and #4 still drop PCIe bandwidth to x8 for Slot #1 and Slot #3.  Just need a confirmation at this point whether this is a known bug or working as intended and the FAQ on PCIe bandwidth is incorrect and needs to be corrected or not:

http://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmmain.aspx?faqid=58513
E760 - X58 SLI Classified

PCIe slot 1: 16x (8x if slot 2 is filled*)
PCIe slot 2: 8x
PCIe slot 3: 16x (8x if slot 4 is filled*)
PCIe slot 4: 8x

*not affected when running 1x PCIe cards like a sound card or Killer NIC

Again, this is incorrect as an x1 card in PCIe slot 2 drops PCIe slot 1 bandwidth down to 8x as seen in the picture below.  Verified with S61D, S61J and now BIOS 44:

Again, just need a simple confirmation whether this is something that's a bug or working as intended so I can stop wasting time checking it every BIOS release and look for alternative solutions, like custom chipset cooling.  Ideally, EVGA could release a Classified North Bridge cooler without the bump preventing larger x1 cards in the top x1 slot, or sell Classified coolers so we can modify it ourselves.

So this problem still persists? Even a x1-card in any of the x8-Slots pulls down both x16-slots to x8?
It is said that only >x1-cards in an x8-slot pull down the corresponding x16-slot to x8. NOT both x16-slots, and not at all with x1-cards!

The reason I bought a X58-platform is the massive amount of PCIe-lanes, to be able to feed my graphics- and RAID-cards!

I, too, would be interested in a definitive answer!

Re:EVGA X58 Motherboards - BIOS 49 Released 2010/03/26 06:02:15 (permalink)
Filling an x8 slot only pulls down the corresponding the x16 slot to x8 speeds.  It doesn't affect both x16 slots.  I have tested this, and filling slot 2 does not affect the speed of slot 3, for instance.

The lingering issue is that x1 cards still reduce the speed of the corresponding x16 slot if placed in an x8 slot.

How do i exactly check which bios i have? I flashed the latest bios but i am not sure if i did it correctly.
I checked the 'Mainboard' Tab in CPU-Z but it says Version 6.00 PG, Date 3/11/2010. Is that right?

Can we please fix this thing for good? For once! You should not require to reboot just to find the BIOS version. All other vendors report their BIOS version correctly in all the programs but EVGA has this generic crap in there. Can someone at evga make this simple change? Put the right version at the right bytes in BIOS.

No, you have to scan the screen in that brief period where it shows the bios version during post. I did not find it anywhere else. You blink, you miss!

Well, that's rather stupid. Why haven't they addressed this yet?

There is a lot of stuff EVGA hasn't addressed yet! And this board's been out for more than a year now.

I don't see many changes coming from them. New BIOS's typically contain a trivial fix or two, nothing major. They tried one major fix (VT double pump) in this BIOS and fell flat on their face! So, their BIOS dept looks severely lacking.

How do I install Everest on Linux? I have only dmidecode, and it works and reports BIOS version for other vendors. Evga decided to put the BIOS version somewhere in non-standard place and put the filler AWARD PG in the standard place, where most tools look for BIOS version.

If you hit pause/break button during boot, that will hold that screen so you can actually look at what it says rather than blinking and missing it..  for Everest Ultimate on Linux, there's a bunch of links to downloads on google - don't know how safe they are.. Did you check the Lavalys forums?.

WOW! I can't believe the difference in this bios upgrading to Gulftown. Not overclocking much yet but at stock voltages except for memory which I have set to 1.66 and vtt at 1.4 this bios is absolutely stable at 4.2.Memory timings are good also 7 7 7 20 88 1t 2000. This is going to be one heck of an overclocker.Default cpu vcore temp does not reach 30c at idle and loaded about 42c .EVGA should lable this bios for Gulftown only as I had nothing but problems on my 965.

EVGA's BIOS struggles continue to baffle and frustrate me (and a whole bunch of other folks). Particularly given the general excellence of their products and support otherwise.

Their flash procedure is fragile (IMNSHO) compared to other MFGRs.  It seems to take forever to address the basic stuff (S3 sleep anyone?) and there are a bunch of fiddly details that would be nice to address, like OPTIONAL added boot delay to allow time to hit ESC or DEL, (eeek! he wants MORE delay????) and so on.  AND Vt-d would be nice...

I wonder how much of this comes from trying to cram an entire BIOS image into something that would fit on a floppy? That would really handcuff the BIOS wizards, or so it would seem to me.  Time to expand the image and move on ...

Z.

Whether its official demo or not, if I am at this page and my 2 yr old daughter or my boss walks in, they don't know that its official nvidia demo and its just graphics and not real image of a woman not wearing much.

Please take this off.

PS: BTW, I am not offended by it.

One thing I really liked about my old Asus board was that you can press F2 on post and enter the Award BIOS programmer. Then you'd simply stick in a thumb drive with the file on it and it had a predetermined drive letter for the thumb drive. Type in the path and let it rip.

You never had to make a bootable floppy, CD or USB drive to flash the bios, just needed the file copied to the flash drive. Nice and easy. It also had a thing to restore the default bios if it failed, although I never had to use that part of it.

I guess my only complaint about this pre-Gulftown BIOS is the double-pump on VT, but I hardly reboot, so it's ok for now. I'm definitely holding off for a few days when the next one comes out.

To play devils advocate, at least EVGA updates the bios frequently. My not-so-old Asus MB's latest BIOS is from 2008 with a beta driver that's over a year old and hasn't been updated.

The build quality of this board seems much better than the Asus. I'm not getting any coil whine and the layout is good. My Asus P5K squealed like crazy, it drove me nuts.

My next GPU will probably be a EVGA 480 when the price drops.

I'm a fan......
