it isnt about the $20 its the fact that they want to profit from a mfg flaw

This in no way should be taken as offense, or an official EVGA opinion, but I pose a question to all who reside on this side of the fence:

How was EVGA supposed to anticipate this possible and rare occurrence with these newer, more powerful graphics cards, in advance?  Especially if they haven't existed yet, even with Nvidia, when the original line of X58 boards (plus 759/760/762) were manufactured, and widely distributed?

EVGA is offering this to everyone, not just those who are possibly affected, as added security for stable flow of +12V.

Those who are directly affected by a serious event similar to those documented on the forums should contact EVGA immediately, and they will make it right.  Otherwise, this is an investment for added protection for all.

If it does happen what will EVGA do to make it right?
Will they replace the customers mobo and PSU or will they say sorry you should of bought the pci-e power boost, that would of kept it from happening.

I would guess an attorney could best answer that question.

What does this actually fix?

If you have to ask, you probably don't need it. But to answer you question it's to boost power to the PCI-e lanes and assist the 24 pin 12v draw to the lanes.

As an outside observer (as the issue doesn't affect my board); let me pose a question to the "other side"

Let's say you had this scenario:

1) You bought an EVGA board that was affected
2) You bought 3 EVGA GTX 480s

Now logically you would assume they would work together because your board was sold as 3xSLI capable and your cards were sold as working with your board.

I know I always buy EVGA across the board when I build a machine, and I've helped others build the same scenario as well. So wouldn't it make you kind of frustrated to find out that you needed to spend another $20 for a group of parts that were supposed to work together to start with?

In this situation it really isn't about the money (afterall $20 is peanuts to the system above); it's about standing behind your products.

You can blame different parties, but at the end of the day in this scenario, all of the products have EVGA written on them.

I'm not saying ALL products have an EVGA logo on them.

I'm saying if you DID purchase that scenario, it should be free to you.

its been said before, its not EVGA fault this even needs to be a part ,the fact they took the time and effort to even make it is lets see ...100% more then ANY other vendor has done .Why should EVGA be punished and expected to offer this FREE to everyone who wants one when no one else even bothered to address the issue ?Kind of a double standard to hold the company who stepped up and offered a fix responsible to provide it for free, while expecting and demanding nothing from the others who still sit idle doing nothing and offering nothing  isnt it ?

That could very well be true, but why should anyone complain to a manufacturer that they did not purchase from? I really don't think that will get any better results. BTW, all these "Pundit driven excuses" are leaving a vomitty taste as well. So far, all I see is that EVGA developed a working "workaround" that is better for them fiscally than a recall.   Again YMMV and apparently does. (Your Mileage May Vary).

Just because ASUS and other MOBO Mfgr's want to jump off a bridge..... blah, blah. It's EVGA's responsibility for "their" customers satisfaction, how they wish to manipulate "market share and reputation" is their choice of course. I really don't think that this would have been nearly as HUGE an issue if EVGA's Support record sucked. When a company suddenly "Drops" standards, it is MUCH more noticeable.  Just Sayin'...........

Its things and attitudes like some shown here that will possible discourage EVGA from going the extra step in the future (Example :i still see complaints about the free GTX480 brackets to this day).JUST SAYING

Yes I do. When you put your label on something, you stand behind it.  If there were power draw issues it should have been mentioned as a warning on the box (specifically the EVGA video card boxes).

Obviously I don't expect EVGA to give these away to free for every scenario.  But in the situation where the owner has both an EVGA motherboard and EVGA video cards, it should be free.

The fact is the people who bought EVGA motherboards and EVGA graphics cards bought from EVGA. They didn't buy from nVidia, they didn't buy from Intel.

What perplexes me about the whole issue, is why does the card draw the extra current from the 24pin instead of the 6/8pin connectors?

Maybe it is, but you don't know what PSU everyone is using.  Some of these units could be underpowered, using the 6/8pin connector, and it's attempting to draw more from the 24-pin.

i think the product is great.  it shows that evga took the time to fix something that was wrong.  the only real problem i see with the product, is the price.  we all know the reason why evga made this, but yet they market it to be something it was never designed for.  i am sure their are people out there that think this product will boost performance.  the $20 price take makes me think it will boost my fps in crysis.  this product is a $10 security blanket for all of us.  20 is way to much.  now i know that there are a few evga members that will disagree with me, but they are the members that would have no problem paying $100 for this power boost card.  i guess i will just have to wait for evga to have a half price deal on the card before i get mine.  in the mean time i hope my mobo doesnt blow

Neverthless, in my opinion as an owner of an E760, EVGA needs to show some corporate responsibility for safety sake, and offer these power mods for free to all users who have registered their products.  This "flaw" has shown the capability to burn systems out and catch fire.  No matter how much the forum fanboy "satraps" and "goldenboys" try to minimize this situation (remember most already have acquired their mods in the beta/goldenboy phase), the risk for burnout/fire will always be there without the mod in place.

Is there any word on when these should be available for purchase? I only run one Gtx 580 card at the moment, but likely will add in a second at some point down the road. I'd like to install a powerboost for piece of mind while it's still fresh in my head.

So far I dont think EVGA has given another ETA.  I just used the "notify me" option.  This worked for me when I was looking for the high flow backplates for my 470's (I ordered literally 5 minutes after receiving the email).  This is my plan for the powerboost as well.. :)

Main Rig:

EVGA X58 SLI LE Mobo (i7 930)
        6GB Corsair Dominator (TR3X6G1600C8D)
        160GB Intel X-25M G2 SSD
        1TB WD Caviar Black HDD
EVGA GTX 580 3GB  (with another on the way!)
        Corsair HX850 PSU
        Coolermaster HAF X Case

(Work Rig Identical, but w/  EVGA GTS250 GFX card, 80GB X-25M G2 and HAF922 case)

So a dealer sells you a car that has a manufactures defect, you expect the dealer (who bought the design)to eat the cost to A.Devlope and make the new part B.and install it ...for free ? Sorry but in real life that would be laughed at .The REFRENECE desing is NOT EVGA's .

Also the
"people"
who bought this ,also bought  Nvidia's design that EVGA used ...why do so many choose to ignore that and just keep saying well EVGA sold it its 100% there job to make it right?

Doesn't anyone think the reason other manufacturers are not doing anything is because they can (and would) pass the blame and responability on to Nvidia ...

The point is it shouldn't be up to us to have to pay. EVGA should go to nVidia to get compensation.

I've had dealers fix TSBs without having to pay.  It's called standing up for what you paid for.

When I spend tens of thousands on a car I don't expect the run around and my dealer doesn't give me one.

They(the dealers) pass it on to the manufacturer.Just like they do with Recall work they do .It doesn't cost the dealer a cent .

it isnt about the $20 its the fact that they want to profit from a mfg flaw

Like has been said from day one.

If the issue occurs we will either give you a new motherboard that has the fix, or a power boost.

To date this issue is extremely rare, only a few confirmed cases.

max silver

Is there any word on when these should be available for purchase? I only run one Gtx 580 card at the moment, but likely will add in a second at some point down the road. I'd like to install a powerboost for piece of mind while it's still fresh in my head.

So far I dont think EVGA has given another ETA.  I just used the "notify me" option.  This worked for me when I was looking for the high flow backplates for my 470's (I ordered literally 5 minutes after receiving the email).  This is my plan for the powerboost as well.. :)

Wasn't so much as trying to insult anyone.   People need to realize that EVGA is simply trying to help and blaming EVGA for not providing a free product to everyone when they want to push their equipment to the limit just does not make sence.  Paying an additional $20 to ensure stability in a $2000 or more system is no big deal.  That is less than 2 system fans for most people.

Re:EVGA Power Boost! 2010/12/22 10:56:37 (permalink)
Why is everyone so quick to blame EVGA , saying they are forcing them to buy the Power Boost, the Power boost is just an option,
There IS  Another work around that can be made from parts you have sitting in your junk drawer. ( although may affect warrantee ) shouldn't as long as you can return the board to factory condition just as addind watter blocks now. and a third option is do nothing, Your RMA would still be intact, and the issue is reported to affect less than 2%, I even started to prepair for a Mod, before the Powerboost was announced.
and trust me, the parts with shipping from new Egg was more than $20. i guess if you figure self labor, you would have to add another $10-$20 depending on what your time is worth, plus disasemble, and assemble time.
Solder modification instead of "powerboost" PCIe cable:

(Re:EVGA X58 759 Classifed Limited Edition #551 down... going to get an ASUS....=/ - Post#364)

All I am saying is we all have choices, and options, but there will still be those that choose to whine. Being proactive is a choice, being reactive is a choice, and doing nothing is a choice.

As far as EVGA profiting from the Powerboost, :
Some People talk like EVGA is making some amazing markup on this fix, as I read other posts I became curious, and decided to do a little Math. Although I did find some facts, I also had to take some liberties with assumptions; I assume you will all follow up with some input, with the assumptions. So we can fill in the blanks.

Shipping standard package at 1 LB from EVGA to My House.

Basic cable without Sleaving,

Calculations:
 $19.99 - $8.93 - $7.99 = $3.07

Now let’s make some assumptions, I assume the sleaving cost something, as well as the Board with the EVGA name on it. I also assume that the people that assembled them did not work for FREE, and the company that they worked for did not build them out of the goodness of their heart. Let’s also assume that the shipping from the manufacturer, via boat or truck was not free, or the fuel used, to move them. Nor am I figuring in the labor to un-pack, ware-house, pack, and label to send.  Now Let’s just assume for a moment, That packing materials are included in the shipping cost. ( So UPS would EAT that ) Lets also assume that on average you have 1 Blue ribbon,( $2 Off ) ,affiliate Bucks, or folding Bucks, ( Consetvitive Estamate, as many are more like me with access to some EVGA Bucks to spend, to make the item Discounted, if not Free,)  although The term Free is not completely aprapo , as even though I don't pay for it, it's not truly FREE. ( Someone does, Perhaps it comes out of the profit, or off the top )   Where do you suppose EVGA is stashing the Millions they are making off this deal, I don't think it's being added to a Christmas Bonus.
*
Sure many of you are going to say EVGA will get a better deal in Bulk, Well if you want to Buld in Bulk, and can offer me a better deal. I'll consider it.

Now lets assume they do give them out for "free", are their emploies Boxing and shipping them for free, without healthcare and bennifits, or are these considerations being hidden into the next item your purchase, or being considered the next time the company considers a contest or give away.
