Opinions on if a Power Boost is worth it for 560 Ti in SLI + 430 for PhysX?

(Not Tri-SLI, of course, which I seem to see generally is held to be worth it, but indeed three cards).

KMoore4318
Well The burnt Power plug issue has been seen on SLI 280,295,480, and 580; The 280 had a max draw of 236 Watts , the 295 draw was 289 Watts max, the 480 max wasn't listed and the 580 was 244 Watts Max...

Best guess from that post - 'worst case' seems to be the 280, which in SLI would pull 472 W, and can apparently lead to a 'burned' power plug.

According to yonder page, the 560 Ti can draw up to 160 W and a 430 up to 49 W, so...that's a total of, what, 369 W?  Far enough away from 472 W to not worry about it?

I had this problem the other day. I was going to order 2 or 3 things. But one day something wasn't available, then the nex it was but something else said not available. They are aware of the concern and are working on it. I was told they were having the least amount of problems with google chrome. But I still had problems. So I ordered what was working and said screw it on the other stuff.

Are people still using the power boost today? Does it have an application for 3.0 boards? Can you think of a situation where you would tell someone to avoid using this product? Thanks GB  2012!!

I'm using it, after experiencing a meltdown a couple months ago. I would imagine if your board does not have a supplemental power connector for SLI setups then I would get this even for 3.0 boards. Lane design does not change power draw from the PSU. Which mobo where you thinking of putting this on?

Hey, thanks so much for the reply! This thing started in 2010 and I didn't think anyone would be reading my post! So  thanks for taking the time. I am thinking about putting it in an X79 Asus Pro and a Gigabyte Z77 G1. Sniper 3      I won't be running SLI.  I just need three slots. One for a Evga GTX 670 FTW, an Areca 1882ix-12 4GB Raid card (needs a X8) and an Asus Essence.  I am concerned on all the Z77 boards, the issue of only a total of 16 lanes unless there is a PLX chip, which the Sniper 3 has. That gives it 32 lanes. I am figuring that the poor lack of foresight on the Z77 might need a boost! How did these MB makers think that they would make a big deal out of PCIe 3.0 and then turn around and basically turn it back into a 2.0 by having the second populated slot turning the first into half of what it was-x16 becomes X8. It's as if they thought no one would notice. Double it and divide it by 2 and tell us to get excited!! LOL

If your not running SLI there is no need. If you want to go ahead though, it does not reduce lanes, because it does nothing more than give more power.
And it is not the Mobo that actually provides 3.0 or the PCI-e lanes, it is the CPU. The mobo BIOS and video drivers determine on whether or not the board is PCI-e 3.0 compliant or not.
If you need lanes, get the X79. Intel did a good job breaking the chipsets up into categories. Intel learned their mistake with the X58 and the i7 920, you wont see Intel make that mistake again.

Thanks again. It does seem to come back around to the X79 everytime! The thing is that although the CPU is the determing factor in PCIe lanes, it still requires a mb build that can tap into the cpu's capabilities. Why the PLX chip in the Z77. I cannot believe that they didn't think that whole thing through and design the board for the utilization of the cpu to it's fullest potential but instead you have a bunch of boards that have 16 lanes total unless the problem was resolved by an add-on.

The Gig G1. Sniper 3 is the most tempting and priced low enough, that I would go with one Z77 and one X79.

Gotta have some fun.

How does one sell two brand new unopned Evga 570 HD 2.5GB cards here on the forum? I have looked around and am not seeing it. thanks

Hello. My 24 pin burned out my motherboard (well, everything still works but if you touch the 24 pin cable the whole PC stops) so it's obvious enough that the contact between the mobo pins and the psu pins is bad (there's brown on the mobo and some melted on the psu pins (barely noticeable)

I'll RMA the motherboard and the PSU. My question is, how do I hook up this Powerboost thing to my motherboard? (X58-UD3R rev 2.0) I don't have a molex connector in the middle of the motherboard like the motherboard. Do I have to upgrade or can I just plug it in any molex connector in the PC? Or will that destroy my computer or something like that :<

Using 2x GTX 580 3GB - Do I need 2x Powerboost units?

Thanks in advance

The PowerBoost hooks up to any free 4pin Molex --> coming off of your powersupply

It plugs into any free PCIEx slot, either x1, x4, x8 or x16 (there is a video on the page where you order it)
Video here on the bottom http://www.evga.com/Produ...aspx?pn=100-MB-PB01-BR

One end ties to your powersupply molex, the other goes into a PCIEx slot

*I have mine installed in the PCIEx1 slot of my motherboard (see my Mods Rigs pic)

maybe because it was needed about 2 years ago for some boards but now is not.Why make a product for something old and EOL and not needed with most all MOBO's made since (they saw a issue and addressed it for the time ) Try second hand etc you will have better luck then asking a company to make something not needed that they made almost 2 years ago for a small portion of users.......

Not all of us can get the latest and greatest components. My computer is only 1 year old. I've already melted one 24-pin connector on my PSU, so I definitly need the fix. I can't afford hundreds of dollars to upgrade MB/CPU or video cards, and they seam to be the culprit.

Re:EVGA Power Boost! 2013/05/08 06:29:46 (permalink)
I have added the Power Boost! to all of my systems, x79 FTW, x79  SLI, and Z77 FTW. They work great on all but the x79 FTW with a GTX 690 installed I get black strips on the screen with running EVGA OC scanner so I pulled it out and the Strips are now gone. The CPU is running 4300MHz and the GTX 690 is set to stock settings. MODS RIGS EVGA X79 FTW System 1 but with only one GTX 690 now.
Thanks for any ideas
Bill

Update, I found that having the Molex and the Power Boost! caused the black line.
After adding a Water Loop the Molex broke of the motherboard so I am now using the Power Boost!.
The Molex was one of the week spots of the x79 FTW MB.
