odinlives Hey Jacob can you please clarify for me what the "Core Ratio Limit Offset" settings should be set at? Everytime I overclock my board I can easily get it to 4.5 ghz but I am only getting one core showing on cpuz.....Great guide btw. Update I have tried just about everything and I know it isn't my chip, as I can pop it in another board and easily obtain 4.5ghz stable. Also is there a Bios update because the EIST doesn't work correctly because when I disable it my CPU is still not running at 3.4ghz when idle; it idle's at 1596ghz. I went through your guide at least 6 times and even if I set the multiplier to 40 and go for a modest 4ghz it still shows only one core like this: Set the Vcore to auto.

Set the Vcore to auto. I will try that but I am overclocking so I need to have the Vcore to at least 1.3 on this chip. Thank you but that doesnt make sense to me why CPUZ would show one core still.

While Jacob and our team work on a fix for the issue you will need to run it on AUTO to enable all the cores.

Thanks guys I did set it to auto and it does resolve the issue however it is kind of sad because I know I can run my chip at way lower Vcore and get a stable 4.5-4.7.... It did work for me like that, running at 4.689ghz right now but I really need to be able to control that Vcore. Thanks EVGA for working hard to resolve this matter. I just got off the phone with them because I actually have to RMA my board :( because the fan header right next to the I/O shield is dead. I tested the fan on another board and it works fine though. The friendly person I spoke to on the phone said another Bios update is in the works to fix this issue as well as the Vcore issue. I'll be waiting patiently :)

Well after I got my replacment board up and running I did some overclocking at got it to 4.8 @ 1.4v but I will try and squeeze a little more later on. While I was previously at 10.9K running at 4.5ghz in 3dmark11 I ran it again this morning at 4.8ghz and my score dropped to 10.3K and was like **** so I ran it again and just squeezed by 11K. Anyone have an answer as to why it would drop 600 point then all of the sudden go higher after a 2nd run?

I searched over google for the life span but couldn't find a thing CPUs are designed to work for around 10 years. No one knows the effect of overclocking, since they've only been out for a few months. You will have upgraded far before it naturally dies.

Nice guide, very clear instructions, but when you increase the multipler to like X40, do you have to increase or decrease Vcore, or leave the Voltages alone? I never overclocked, so I'm trying to understand before I will do anything. I have the EVGA P67 FTW mobo and i7 2600K @3.4Ghz CPU

Any time you raise the speed at which the processor will be running, an increase in voltage will probably be necessary. Small raises may not, but a jump from stock 3.4Ghz to a 40X multiplier resulting in a 40.0Ghz speed probably will. If you go back and read the guide again you will notice in his post that Jacob raised the CPU volts to 1.3v.

yap, I saw that, but what I'm not understanding is, let say I wanna go to 4.5Ghz, that mean that according to hes formula 100Mhz X 40multipler = 4.0Ghz, so I got to set up 45multipler to obtain 4.5Ghz, but my questions is he set 1.3V for 40multipler, what I have to set for 45multipler, it's any formula to calculate the Vcore increase on increasing multipler? and memory now, how do you understand how to over clock that, like the RAM that I'm getting have a time of 8-8-8-24 1600Mhz DDR3, how can you set it up to get better performance from it?

Absolutely not, thats part of the overclocking challenge. Every CPU is going to be different. So what you wan to do now is raise the multi to 41, leaving the vcore at 1.3, then run some stress tests like P95 or Linx and see if its stable. If its stable still at 1.3v the raise the multi to 42, repeat testing. You will eventually become unstable and have to raise the vcore.

OK, thanks Lvcoyote, unstable you mean by, PC freazing? and anyway, how do you know when you hit the top, like it is any limit or it's a way to understand when you are a top performance on that CPU? There is a risk to fry the all system do to unappropriated setting or set it too HI? Now I'm start to understand what plp mean by you can't OC by using setting on a software like AI on ASUS mobo (where the software allow the user to OC up to 20% on def setting) were actually the system is never stable and it will end up to crash or reboot by it self while playing.

No, I mean by the stress tests causing a blue scree or the system freezing like you say. Google for "LinX Stress Test" and down load it and run it for 20 passes to check for stability, it should take about an hour to complete all 20 passes. Damage can be summed up in one word.....heat. The higher you raise the CPU voltage, the hotter the CPU is going to run. Keep an eye on your CPU temps when you run the stress tests, if the CPU gets to 80c, then you are pretty much at your max overclock with the cooling solution you might be using.

I never OC before so sorry if I ask so many questions, I'm just trying to understand the game here Well.. it's up to you really... a few quick guidelines.. follow the guide, till A) You reach too high temps for your liking. 75c is the common max for a 24/7 OC on these chips it seems B) you reach 1,5v - any thing above that and potentially reduce the lifespan of your CPU quite severely. Generally, if you are just going for a benchmark run at 5,x Ghz or something like that, you can for that short time the benchmark is running live with higher temps, but as I said. 1,5v MAX and 75c should be your upper limits. My bet is you reach the 75c before the 1,5v.

Again it depends on your components, there is no simple answer. You HAVE TO spend the time testing and testing and testing. Every system is going to be different. The lazy overclocker never gets far and often does damage to their system. Go slow, one step at a time until you find the best overclock that will stay under the 80C while stress testing. The importance of stress testing is to find out the minimum amount of voltage for any given speed.
