I am attempting an upgrade from 4 to 16 gigs of RAM. Unfortunately, the machine won't get past the EVGA splash screen when using the new RAM.

Motherboard: EVGA P55 Micro

DIMM (old single stick works)  OCZ OCZ3G1333LV4G Gold 4GB PC10666

DIMM (new replacements don't work)  Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 XMS 8GB DDR3 RAM - PC10666

(I bought 2 pair for 16G total)

The old memory works fine. No combination from a single stick to multiple of the new will get past the splash screen, though I can get into the BIOS when less one or two sticks are installed. I see nothing out of the ordinary in the BIOS. I have reset the CMOS. No dice. Replacing the 4 gig OCZ works fine.

Known differences:
old 1.65v  - new 1.5v
old 9-9-9-20  - new 9-9-9-24
These seem reflected in the BIOS as auto is set for most settings.

Any thoughts or suggestions?  Is the new Corsair memory compatible? Seems like it should be as it's nearly identical to the OCZ.

UGH!

THANKS!!!

you could first try to update the BIOS to the latest version  - those usually add compatibility for newer ram modules & cpu types.

Other than that, try setting the timings & volts manually in the BIOS screen for the new sticks

If NO-GO ,  you may have to return / exchange for a different set . Checking your manual for verified compatible sets

Upgrading the BIOS (72 to 74) didn't help. The new memory should be compatible as far as I can tell for the motherboard.

From the MB PDF: "Supports dual channel DDR3-1600+. Officially supports up to 16GBs of DDR3 memory"

With one Corsair stick it blue screens in ClassPNP.SYS when booting into safe mode. Unfortunately, it auto reboots at that screen so I can't seen any more info. Any more than one and it won't even open then BIOS (stuck at the EVGA splash)

All extra hardware has been removed, so this is just the MB, graphics card (GeForce GTX 460) and USB Mouse and Keyboard.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Are you doing it like the manual says ?

Installing System Memory (DIMMs) Your new motherboard has four 240-pin slots for DDR3 memory. These slots support 1GB, 2GB, 4GB DDR3 technologies. There must be at least one memory bank populated to ensure normal operation. Use the following the recommendations for installing memory.  One DIMM: If using 1 DIMM (Single Channel), install into: DIMM slot 1.  Two DIMMs: If using 2 DIMMs (Dual Channel), install into: DIMM slots 1 and 3.  Four DIMMS: If using 4 DIMMs (Dual Channel), install into: DIMM slots 2, 1, 4, and 3. Use the following procedure to install memory DIMMs. Note that there is only one gap near the center of the DIMM slot. This slot matches the slot on the memory DIMM to ensure the component is installed properly. 1. Unlock a DIMM slot by pressing the module clips outward. 2. Align the memory module to the DIMM slot, and insert the module vertically into the DIMM slot. The plastic clips at both sides of the DIMM slot automatically lock the DIMM into the connector

Tried doing all that. No post errors are seen. Just hangs (more than one stick) or auto-reboots after a BOD in ClassPNP.SYS BIG-IF its get to the Windows boot menu(one stick only). (no go in safe mode, or even booting to the prompt) Also, that's the PDF I've been referencing, so we are working from the same reference. It would be super nice if it would stop on the BSOD long enough to see what that error was. A boot error log isn't found either.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm not sure I can say anything more than the memory might be no good or incompatible... and the usual GOOGLE for that  "classpnp.sys" error

Incompatible. Not likely to be bad as each single stick gives the same results.

I'm returning for a full refund. Glad for places that gives good service.

I found 8G of the exact same OCZ that I have 4G of on ebay. I'll give that a try and report back with the results. Too bad that memory isn't available any more. It's marketed as made specifically for the P55 (and a few others). I've had zero problems with it, except not having enough. The machine uses all the physical ram when I do the audio editing I need to do. (For most other things there's enough to get by with just 4G)

My Patriot sector 5 were designed for the P55 1156, I just installed my old pair of 2x2g with my newer 2x4g and their running great. You are better off running 4x4 to make 16, rather than using 2x8 on memory controller. The bios for these boards were last updated in 2012 which might make them less compatible with 2x8g configuration. The 1.65v sticks run better when using 1st gen I5 and I7s

Got 8G of OCZ from ebay today. Works perfectly, so far. 3 * 4G for 12G total. Nice to boot up and not see any more than 20% RAM used during the whole process. 4G is not enough (not anything new there).

I'm happy. Wish the other had worked. Still don't know why it was incompatible, though.

    Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Just remember running 1 or 3 sticks = single channel
                                      2 or 4 sticks = dual channel
