any one else experience this problem with this card or maybe its a gtx 970 problem

ive had 2 of these in sli for about 8 months and every now and again while in games they seem to drop they clock speeds down to 220 mhz or 550 mhz for no apparent reason while in games i notice this because i run msi after burner to keep tabs on framerate and clock speeds

could afterburner be causing the problem with its throttling cause iam not sure but it might be when the card or a card goes over 80 degrees but never much higher

the problem is it keeps the card throttled for hours and no amount of driver reinstalls or even a complete windows install once don't fix it ,it just wiil just randomly fix the clock speed a day or maybe 3 days later

i was thinking maybe my power supply wasn't up to the job but i have checked and it seems ok  also could it be a problem with the pci express port on my motherboard its an asus x99-s model but done some reasearch and get find an answer on that all drivers and bios on motherboard up to date only thing i have noticed is  the pci e speed bus interface  on the second card drops to 1.1 instead of 3 in desktop but the first one stay at 3 shown by gpu-z not sure how to check in 3d

i have been using nvidia cards from day 1 when they launched the geforce 256 ddr and had many cards since but never come across this little annoying problem

Create an aggressive fan profile to keep the temps down. 80°C is too hot IMO.

If you have a multi monitor computer then the clocks get messy with the 970. I also agree 80C is hot and you should probably either raise the fan speed in that temp zone (70-80) or raise the thermal target to 85C to prevent a temperature downclock.

Sounds like you got yourself a defective card. Even if the card was running at 80C it wouldn't downclock itself all the way down to 220MHz.

    thanks for reply's
i do use an aggressive fan curve in afterburner if i play games that are demanding but i've noticed sometimes my cards get hot like 80 and some days playing the same game and same fan curve it only goes to 70  who knows why that is
also one time when the down clocking lasted 2 days i swapped  both cards over in the mother board  several times  and disabled sli and they both were down clocked so surely they both cant be defective cards could it be a motherboard issue is that possible to down clock the cards because if i swapped  both cards  over it looks like to me it could be another hardware issue causing it or isn't it possible for that to exist
