    oh, a 4k screen, I wonder if a 980m will be able to handle that very well, I know they have a "full desktop 980" that you can put into a laptop now I heard, wonder how that would do if they offered a version with that. likely wouldn't be able to keep it thin then however.

    My current laptop is aging, but it's a beefy (read big and heavy) desktop replacement type laptop. given that I normally bring a keyboard, mouse and monitor with me I should have gone for a LAN/HTPC build instead.

    But for those that want to use a gaming laptop as a laptop, this looks great, but again, I wonder how well it'll drive a 4k screen.

    I thought that Jacob talked about it in a pod cast a little bit and there had been talk of a full 980 chip in it. But he obviously couldn't confirm anything at that point. But looking at the design that might be far fetched due to cooling ability of what looks to be a fairly thin design. At any rate its a very nice setup and I can't wait to see prices and specs. I've missed having a gaming laptop since my Asus G74 died.

    The video card for the 980 for laptops isn't the same size as the one for desktops, they made it smaller.  Unless you were referring to increase heat being the issue.

    Well, they are already saying everything is factory overclocked and even nvidia doesn't want mobile gpu's overclocked, so yeah, it will probably be locked down for the end user.

    That doesn't change much though, depending on the price.

    Should be interesting to see where it stacks up with the others that have been around for a while.

    EVGA Gaming Laptop 17" 4K 2016/01/13 13:15:45 (permalink)
    I hope I didn't open a can of beans here, as I haven't seen any reference to this laptop here at the forum.

    The videos below are from LinusTechTips CES 2016 coverage. The first video is a quick lookover of the EVGA laptop, and the second one is a short review of 5 new gaming laptops at CES.

    I don't play games on laptops, but the EVGA laptop looks pretty good. I think with a 'large all-terrain Bluetooth gaming mouse' something like this could work for me. The spec's look great and I'm sure the cost will be high, but for great gaming portability, it should work.

    After watching the video of all the laptops, I have to say that the EVGA looks the best. Very refined. I'm glad EVGA went with blue backlighting over orange or red. It will be fun to see some performance reviews in the future.

    edit: Opps, I just noticed another thread started a week ago...sorry.

    All the specs for this are superb except for the glossy screen.. All the CES videos for this said an estimated Feb launch. I wouldn't mind waiting a little longer for a 4k matte black g-sync screen option. The glossy screen glare is unbearable.

    Hi all.

    Is there any information about a probable release date for this yet? Or even a date when we might get some more information? It's coming up on two months since it was announced and as of yet no new info. I believe in the pax demo someone mentioned a couple of months til release, which vaguely suggests March or April... Googling the laptop comes up with nothing new.
    I'm on the verge of buying a new laptop and if this comes out in Q1 I'll wait, but would rather not have to wait until summer...

    Edit: Pwnstars actually the reason I want this is precisely because of the glossy screen- the market is full of matte screen laptops now and I hate em! :)

    You do know that you can turn a matte screen into a glossy one by adding a piece of glossy clear film that comes from some new monitors. Not sure where you would get it from locally though....

    Please let this land in Europe aswell, atleast in the same quarter. Although I am superscared of what the pricing might be.

    Also, kudos for having R6: Siege in the video. Love that game.

    I emailed the EVGA French Sales Manager today and this is what he had to say:

    - The SC17 will definitely be sold in France [therefore probably in the rest of the EU too];

    - It will be launched sometime in Q2;

    - The price will likely be somewhere between €2,500 and €3,000, but no official number is yet available.

    CyberpowerPC showed stock on the non-gsync model a few weeks ago but on Friday the link redirected to an easter sale. According to the specs from Cyberpower some areas might have been overlooked.
    • HDMI 2.0 instead of 1.4
    • Thunderbolt support for the USB Type-C connection
    • Killer LAN instead of the low grade intel networking card
    • Option or equivalent of the Avermedia Live hardware stream engine card
    •  Option for 980 over 980M
