The 980 Ti is not gimped at all. 980 Ti has the exact same performance as the Titan X. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GGvvjmb5L4

980 vs 980 Ti has a 10 - 15 FPS difference on average. At some point the extra CUDA cores stop making a difference on the games out right now. I'm just going to take a wild guess and say around 2300 CUDA cores is the cap with the games out right now which is probably why Titan X and 980 Ti have the same performance and only a 13 - 18 FPS difference 980 vs Titan X

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti! 2015/06/01 17:42:50 (permalink)
The problem is the difference in number of cuda cores between 980 and 980ti is bigger than the difference in cuda cores between 980 and 970. That combined with the fact that the 980 Ti reference stock is barely lower than the 980 and oc'd to to 1400 makes me feel like nvidia massively screwed all 980 and Titan x owners.

It doesn't matter how many cuda cores it has. My point was that the 980 vs 980 Ti has the same performance gap that the 970 vs 980 have.

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti! 2015/06/01 18:10:59 (permalink)
The number of cuda cores does matter. That's like saying a six core cpu is as good as a quad core at multithreaded apps. The performance gap is bigger than the 980 vs 970. You have 2 gigs more, a larger bandwidth bus, and 800 more cuda cores. 970 is missing about 500 cuda cores and ~0.5gb ram but it's on the same architecture. So it's not like there's that much difference. 980 vs 960 is about a fair comparison as 980 vs 980ti. Wow now I really feel screwed.

The problem is that the extra six gigs of memory in the Titan x won't be of much use for at least 6 months or so. We haven't even seen games running dx12. My guess is Titan x was a preemptive step for dx12. I also think that nvidia knows what the r9 300 series is looking like on paper and they priced the 980 Ti about $100 lower than it was supposed to be so they could grab as much of the market share as they could before the 300 series came out.

By that point Pascal will be released and you will feel even more cheated. Pascal is due some time next year. Also as far as gaming the 6 core is not much better than a 4 core. DX12 is supposedly going to take advantage of more cores but we've all heard this before with DX10 and DX11 and you see how that went...

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti! 2015/06/01 18:16:11 (permalink)
Keep in mind 980 Ti was supposed to be released in February. I'm secretly hoping that there'll be another ram gate so i can feel better about having gotten a second 980 classy. Seriously I would've returned it to Amazon if I hadn't already put it underwater.

Gaming wise yes the 6 core is actually worse unless you get the 5930k or the 8 core 5960x. But smart people don't build a gaming PC just to play games.

Well the thing with dx12 is it really depends on the game using the api...I think it'll be really rough at first and then things will smooth out in time...I wonder if I should sell my 980s...

What else are you going to use your gaming PC for? Everything else requires less performance unless you are video editing or video game developing in which case quadro series is the better route to go. Everything depends on what you are going to use it for.

MAC has its strong points but normal tasks and gaming probably aren't what you should use a MAC for.

I use my gaming PC for games obviously and work/school. Doesn't mean I should buy the best components at this point in time. I upgrade when necessary after price drops as far as CPUs and MOBOs go. V-Cards by the time the price drops might as well go with the newest but maybe a step or 2 down from the best for dollar to performance value if you don't have disposable income like me.

There are things you shouldn't go cheap on GPU, MOBO, PSU, and RAM. CPU and GPU you can make price cuts.

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti! 2015/06/01 18:31:58 (permalink)
I used to use Mac but as much as I hate to admit it windows is far more advanced. You have no options with Mac and frankly it's made for ppl who just want things that work outta the box. Mac also uses 2nd rate hardware, and that's giving them more than they deserve.

I use my rig for everything, and I dabble in video editing. Unless you're a professional who gets paid for content creation, there's no reason to run quaddro. If you think Titan x price : performance is bad, the quaddro is even worse. I was running a single gtx 770 on air and renders for 5 min video @ 1080p hardly took any time at all. 980 I'm sure will be much faster.

I also agree about not skimping on quality. I buy Asus motherboards, and sometimes EVGA b/c even though they're not as experienced as Asus with mobos their customer service is king...I never have to fear an RMA if it comes to it.

EVGA is king of psu and gpu though.

I know the Quadro is worse but that's because it's not meant for the task that the Titan X was designed to do just like the Xeon and i7 should never be compared because they are for 2 completely different tasks.

Re: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti! 2015/06/01 18:36:53 (permalink)
Well that line is getting blurred now because Xeon was the only chip that could do serious server stuff, and now the 5960x is close but just uses way more power. Although you could underclock and get similar performance.

I was speaking in reference to the quaddro as a video card. Most gaming guys perform just as well as the quaddro and even better in most applications unless you get past the $1000 range. Gaming gpus are extremely, extremely versatile, whereas quaddros are anything but. I'd rather have a gpu that's a jack of all trades than have one that's a master of one (at a ridiculous price premium).

Yeah I could see the 5960x being used as a server CPU over a Xeon.

I agree with you on that too, I'd rather pay for something that can do it all as opposed to limit myself to using my system for 1 task.

Wait.. what?

I'm kinda glad the Hybrid is OOS currently else I know I would pull the trigger. I want to wait and see what the full Fiji chip has and it's price point but I've been itching for an upgrade. The lack of the Witcher 3 also annoys me, that was the icing on the cake. 2 - $60 games + the sale of my 680 brought the price down quite a bit. Enough that I'd even be able to justify an SLI solution later this year.

Tried searching, but is the 980 Ti ACX versions gonna have custom coloring like the 980 Kingpin?

What is the performance difference between the 970 SSC+ (3975) in SLi or one GTX 980 Ti?, I'm thinking about stepping up one of my cards for the 980Ti if it performs better than two of my 970's

Intel i7-6700K @4.6GHz (v1.36) Adaptive mode
G Skill Ripjaws V DDR4 32GB (2x16GB) 1.35v @3200MHz
X2 EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC (3975) ACX 2.0 (Nvidia Driver V372.90)
ASUS Maximus Hero VIII (Bios: 2001)
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD
EVGA SuperNOVA 850W G2 PSU
Corsair H100i CPU Cooler

Really wish I could step up to the version with the back plate already installed. I may sell my 980 SC with the back plate I bought separate so I can buy the version with the back plate instead of stepping up to the card with out one.

I kind of like the way the 980 looks more too, the side is black compared to like silver on the ti.

So is the price on the standard 980 going to go down even further like what the 780 did after the 780 Ti? I noticed that newegg is now offering a reference 980 SC for $580 w/ a 20 rebate card (so a grand total of $560). Does anybody think the price is going to drop again when the r9 3xx series hits?

Please test it thoroughly for any ramgate issues you might find. Titan X and 980 buyers need to know this is a full 6GB card so they can rage and entertain the rest of us :D

Any idea on when the 980 Ti Hydro coppers will be available?  I have two 780 Hydro's and would like to upgrade them finally.  Any way to get on a waiting list or do I just need to be awake and on the site when the items become available?

Will do. But I dont think there is ram issue on GTX980ti on the review. Since ROPS numbers are same is Titan X.

Why oh why does the Hybrid have to be that ugly gold/yellow colour?

I just can't fathom the decision making process. The original 980 Hybrid looked clean with its white and was aesthetically compatible with all types of colour schemes.

Its 2015. Aesthetics are important.
