Hello gents,

I decided to replace my failed AMD 7870 with another blower style GPU. EVGA GeForce GTX 970 Superclocked P/N: 04G-P4-1972-KR was my choice.

It works well, it plays games well. I'm happy with the performance - EXCEPT... The fan makes a terrible sound at all times. From HWMonitor, my idle temperature is 27 degrees C (with fan speed of ~1200 rpm/29%), and 40-50 degrees under load - very reasonable in my opinion. The fan makes a "Cessna prop plane in the distance" or "vibrating cellphone on a hard surface sound", but at a deeper pitch, essentially like a growling 2-stroke motor in the distance. I have had several complaints from people that my computer is loud, even from adjacent rooms. With 2000 rpm it just adds that familiar jet engine air sound on top of the fan's idle noise. My ancient GTX 8800 blower or the more recent AMD 7870 HD both made little to no sound without load, and a faint jet engine when gaming.

I downloaded EVGA PrecisionX to tweek the fan RPM to a lower value, but it won't go below 29% or 1216 rpm. I stuck my finger to interrupt the fan during idle, and the noise was totally gone. The problem is definitely isolated to the fan motor.

I then opened up the card and took a closer look at the fan motor. I can appreciate how easily it is dismounted and wired up, well done EVGA - if only it also worked well. When spinning it by hand, it makes a ratcheting sound, which is not at all present in the fans of my previous cards, which both make a buttery smooth rotation. The EVGA fan also wobbles by several millimeters in the Z-axis when facing upwards.

I tried to find an online reference to the motor specifications so that I could buy a replacement one, but have failed to do so. I really don't want to bother sending this card back to newegg Canada just because a silly fan makes a horrid noise. Any help is really appreciated.

    Okay.

Having opened up the Fan assembly, and peeling off some sort of dampening foam, I finally glanced at the motor serial: BFB0712HF

I guess I'll order one right now, and hopefully it'll work better. Although I might look into a different type of motor that's more guaranteed to be quiet.

It shouldn't be that loud. Start a rma and get it replaced

Just for a fan though? Looks like I can get one for $15 easy. Whereas postage, time to get it shipped, and going without the card is way more costly and a hassle. I wish EVGA would just be nice and send me a motor that I can replace myself, it's not like I have to solder it in.

    Thanks for the input.

Unfortunately I am having the exact same problem it's driving me crazy! My pc is near the TV and even the girlfriend is going nuts on how loud it is. All I can now hear is eastbenders,! Any help would be amazing. Really don't want to send back unless I have to. Also get major coil whine when I get very high fps on games like fifa..

Okay. I ordered the fan for 15 bucks, and go it a few weeks ago. It's basically the same motor, but with a Zotac prop. I was about to replace it, but then my motherboard died.

I'll be getting a new one in a few weeks, with some other components to fix up my Desktop. I'll update this thread when I finally switch out the GPU fan. I'll probably take both fans apart, and swap the fan heads, since the actual motor is independent of the top plastic spinning piece. We'll see if that was the cause, or the motor itself.

I could just power it up with a breadboard on my own, but that's a hassle, and I don't want to make a mistake and burn out the replacement.

With regards to painful coil whine at high fps, I simply capped the FPS in Precision X down to 70ish. This really took the load off the GPU, when it was pointlessly pumping out 200FPS for a 60Hz monitor.

    Good luck.
