First, my Specs:
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79
Processor: Intel i7-4930K LGA 2011 64
PSU: Corsair RM Series 850 Watt ATX/EPS
16 GB DDR3 1866 MHZ RAM
Windows 7 SP1
EVGA GTX 970 SC

Drivers: Mainly used 344.75, now using 347.09 but still getting the same issues.

So like everyone else, I bought the card for the holidays along with graphic heavy titles.
Here are the issues I'm dealing with:

Shadows of Mordor: In Ultimate setting(Along with the high res texture download), it looks beautiful until the screen goes blank. I don't get this issue AS MUCH with the high setting, but do run into crashes from time to time. Anyways, shouldn't this card be handling that game pretty damn well?

FarCry 4: Not much of crashing here from what I remember... it just looks really bad with the Nvidia settings. Like the shadows are wayyyy too dark, everything looks desaturated... It's fine when played in High mode.

Dragon Age Inquisition: Crash after Crash after Crash... In a random way too. I tried to find patterns of it happening but it just crashes after I play for awhile. Especially when I play with Ultimate setting. The crash is less frequent when I play it with High Settings like everything else.

It's getting frustrating not being able to play with Ultimate mode after dishing out so much for this card... the crashing black screen is annoying as well. Is this a known issue? Is my card broken and need a new one? Is this a Driver issue?

    Welcome to the EVGA Forums,

Let's try and get to the bottom of your issue.   Here is what I suggest doing first...

#1 Perform a clean boot of windows.

#2 Perform a clean installation of video drivers.
    1. Uninstall Precision X/Afterburner if installed, make sure to select "no" to saving profiles if asked. Reboot the machine.
    2. Download & save graphics driver 347.09 to your desktop. Run it after download is complete.
    3. Select custom advanced install, under custom installation options uncheck all options except the physx system software, if you are using audio over HDMI please select the HD Audio driver, if you have a 3D capable monitor and would like to use 3D at some point select the 3D Vision driver also, check mark perform clean install, then click next to install the driver, reboot when asked.

#3 Test Shadows of Mordor & DAI to see if you're still getting the black screen.

If you're still receiving black screens in both games after doing steps 1-3 above try the following...

#1 Download MSI Afterburner and set the fan speed (%) to max.
    #2 Test your games.

If you're still receiving black screens in both games after setting the fan speed to max try the following...

#1 Open afterburner, select settings, select general tab, check mark "unlock voltage control", set Core Voltage(mV) to max, set fan speed (%) to max.
    #2 Test your games.

If you're still receiving black screens after performing all the above please report back for further assistance.

Sajin, thanks for the guide.  I'm having similar issues as OP.

Without any warning, my system will hard lock (black screen) and require a hard shut down.  I have 2 x GTX 980 FTW at stock clocks.  Sometimes it crashes so hard that one of the GPUs will not be detected (GPU 1) upon reboot.  I have to fully shut down, wait a minute or two, and boot back up before it will be recognized.

These locks occur in Dragon Age inquisition with 347.09 nvidia drivers.  Clean install, following your advice above.  (I only installed physx and the display driver, I didn't need any of the others.)  My last system, with the same exact mobo/cpu/ram/psu had no issues at all.  I had 2 x 680 FTWs which required vastly more power from the PSU.

I was leaning towards a new power supply initially, now I'm leaning towards a conversation with EVGA.  I've been a loyal EVGA customer for years, and this is beyond frustrating.

    Important info:
i7 2600k @ 4.2 ghz (I've tried stock speeds, same black screen crash)
    8gb ddr3 1600mhz corsair
    ASUS P8P67 pro
    2 x EVGA GTX 980 FTW
    M4 ssd
    1000 watt OCZ ZX PSU

I had no crashing issues prior to installing the 980s.  Temps never go above 55~C with "aggressive" fan profile on precision x.  I should also note that the stock speeds on these cards are 1405 (I did not adjust anything, this is simply the clock speed precision x shows me.  The voltage on the top card is 1.21 and the other card floats at 1.85~.  Is that an issue?

Update: Is it possible my PSU isn't providing enough voltage? My power supply outputs 83A (100A peak).  Is that enough for 2 x GTX 980 FTW?

I've tried everything short of re-installing windows 8.1.

UPDATE: After down-clocking... from stock speeds...my cards are stable at 1350 mhz. which is approx 50~mhz less than advertised for the GTX 980 FTW.

I will continue testing at 1350~ mhz but I've been playing DA:I for about an hour straight with no crashes.

I don't want to jump to conclusions, nor do i wish to bad mouth EVGA but If this turns out to be 100% stable I'm very concerned that EVGA is selling FTW branded cards (and maybe other models) that cannot run at advertised core / boost clock speeds. I hope we see a response from an EVGA official...

TLDR: If you are having black screen crashes at stock speeds with your 970 / 980 - try simply typing -50 on the boost core clock in precision X software.

Looks like it's time to RMA due to being unstable at advertised speeds.

I would increase to max first the power target in MSI afterburner.   you do not really want to increase the voltage as we hit the wattage limit very quick so just an increase to power target should be encouraged, then try voltage if needed.

there is a hardOCP article talking about hitting a higher overclock by actually keeping voltage down so it would imply more stable stock clocks also (we all wish these were power unlocked as they have shown 2.0GHz overclocks on ice).

I'm pretty sure it is the card. My previous 970s did not black screen on me, but this 2nd rma card does that. Really tired of 900 series already...

What would you do if you were in my position?  Does the RMA process leave you without GPUs for several days? Or do they ship you replacement cards first?

EDIT: Sidenote - Dragon Age Inquisition is an amazing game.  The particle affects, vegetation, water, and textures are downright amazing on Ultra settings. It's a shame that i may have to ship these GPUs back.

I would RMA the cards. Depends on what type of RMA you choose to do. http://www.evga.com/howtorma/

Hmmmmm.... EVGA is now listing their stock boost clock speeds (on their own product page) for the GTX 980 FTW as 1380mhz. As a reminder, my cards at stock are running at 1405 boost.  Why?

This number has changed 4 times since the FTW was posted on their product page, taken down, then reposted (originally posted back in Nov if i remember correctly). Do you think they will release an update (bios or otherwise) that will "correct" the boost speed to 1380?

    This is very interesting...

The reason your card is running at 1405MHz is because of the way GPU Boost 2.0 works. I doubt EVGA will release a vBIOS to correct the boost speed to 1380 as you can do it yourself using msi afterburner/precision x.

Hi, I have the exact same issue with my EVGA GTX980. I will RMA shortly these days. I noticet that certain games will not return black screens so probably many users have the same issue and still don't know that, probably they'll figure out too late to RMA in the easy way. My question is: what is the prob. to take another faulty card? I mean what % to have this issue again I have with my new card? EVGA team surely knows how many cards return this problem

It's very easy: Out of the box, with default bios and settings, the cards are supposed to work and not crash. Yes it seems to be a rather common issue with some cards, especially the SC cards. Don't get worked up over it...because it can be you're looking for the problem for days and weeks...IT'S THE CARD. Send it in and get a replacement, this is the best thing you can do rather than looking for the problem with your OS or drivers etc. It's a waste of time when it's really the card having the problem.
