Is anybody else with this card having this problem? It only seems to happen when I play Skyrim, and Metro 2033. Not sure if other games will cause my computer to crash with a black screen. I have already done a stress test with FurMark, and it didn't crash. Tweaked the fan curve so that the temperatures stay at around 60-70C, so It can't be that it's overheating. I did notice that at first, my ASUS motherboard would restart my computer because of surge protection, now that I disabled it, it won't give me the message, but it still crashes and I have to restart. I know that it can't be my PSU that's faulty, because my computer didn't have this problem with my old PNY GTX 770, which requires more wattage. If somebody could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Edit: A BIOS Update fixed my problem, will update on status if problem comes back.

Here's my specs for reference:

It's the Superclocked version. This one:  And I tried playing other games, and for some reason, Tomb Raider, didn't crash at the highest possible settings at 1920x1080 resolution. So I'm really confused. Unless Metro 2033 is overloading the graphics card or something. Maybe I need to underclock it so it matches the regular version of this card?

I seem to be having a similar issue with my 970 SSC ACX2.0.

The screen will go black (explorer windows will flicker once or twice), then remain black, with just the mouse cursor visible.

Unfortunately, I don't have a second PC at hand. I'm in the middle of doing a full driver clean and PCIe slot switcharoo to see if that helps.

Also, the thing I find most peculiar, is how some games will work, any video, and all stress tests worked. Just a couple of games so far give me the dreaded black screen and PC reset. And my ASUS board is causing that restart for "Surge Protection." Is it really possible that only some and not all games cause that? I keep thinking it's a driver error, since they are very new cards. Has anyone with the 900 series cards had problems with Metro2033 or Skyrim?

This right here. Inconsistent as hell.

I did some testing, and found the following games acted as such:

GTAIV (Very High) - No problems.
    HAWKEN (Ultra) - No problems.
The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition (Ultra) - No problems.
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (Ultra, apart from Texture Quality) - Managed to get in-game twice (beyond main menu), but all other attempts just resulted in crashes.
Far Cry 3 (Ultra) - Crash on start. Wouldn't run.
Minecraft (As high as it'll go) - Low FPS. Worse than my previous card, ASUS 560.

Though I will note that I didn't experience any fan noise. I did experience some severe microphone interference, but PCIe slot reshuffling pretty much sorted that.

I'm going to return the card and probably go for a different model.

I was thinking about that too, but then I came across this : Unfortuately, I can't link it, but look up that in the forums, it helped shed some light on this. It is most likely a driver problem.
"Driver stopped responding and recovered errors with my EVGA GTX 980 SC on default clocks!"

Same here, still got a black screen and crashed, got that same warning from my Asus board about anti surge, to protect my system from an unstable power supply. Could it really be my PSU causing this problem, and why only on some games? I'm going to do more research and tests before I needlessly waste money on something I may or may not need.

My Windows 7 64 bits break (crashes) every time when I play Battlefield 4. It happens after some time playing, like 10 min, 5 min, 2 min or less. The OS stops with the game's screen and I need reboot the system turning off the PC with the PC's button.
This failure is more common with Battlefield 4, but happened with Battlefield 3, F1 2014 (rarely) and Fifa 15 too.
I spent a lot of money buying the EVGA GTX-970 1972-KR and it now I can't play my favorite games.
With my old graphic card, Radeon HD 6870 , I played all this games and I never had any problem.
After the first problems, I reinstalled the Windows and the graphic card drive is updated.
    My PC configuration is:

Same problem is happening for me (2 day old graphics card, GTX 970). Random crashes to black screen while playing Skyrim. I can still hear the sound of the game, but monitors go completely black and only way to fix is a hard reset of the PC using the power button. GPU temperatures are not exceeding 70C, I've monitored them while playing - doesn't seem to be related to temperature at all. Seems quite ridiculous to me. Hasn't happened in any other game so far, granted I've only played TF2 and Borderlands:Pre-Sequel besides Skyrim.

I'm really disappointed by this... Skyrim is one of the main games I play, and now my whole computer crashes while playing it for ~10-20 minutes... it's unplayable. My old computer with a crappy graphics card at least didn't completely crash playing Skyrim.....

OP said a BIOS update solved his problem, but imo that doesn't seem like the answer, because I have a completely different motherboard (ASrock h97m pro4) and I am experiencing same exact problem in same game. Any suggestions or options here? Seems like other people are having this black screen problem in a variety of games with GTX 970 from searches I've done. Is it likely a graphics driver problem or a hardware problem? I really don't know how to proceed and am very sad....

    Hi everybody!
I changed my power supply unit from 600W to 850W and the problem has been solved!
I've read a review about my new graphic card (GTX 970) and they tested the voltage in some games. The graphic card uses a lot of voltage in specific moments of some games and the PSU may not support it.
My GC indicates that 500W is enough to support, but in my case 600W wasn't enough.

500W is enough, if you have a good 500W PSU and a non-haswell/haswell-e chip (I'm sure some 500W supplies can do those chips too, but you'll probably find more complaints than normal). The issue probably has to do with current delta and cheap/underpowered capacitors, so the faster things in your system go between max and min, the better PSU you need. The 850W supply probably has that much larger capacitors (to handle the 850W load with low noise), though a good 650W PSU would have been just as effective.

The problem is if you use ultra resolution setup in games as Battlefield 4. There are some moments with high voltage. The rest of computer's configuration is important too. My processor is an AMD FX-6100 and AMD processors may use more voltage than Intel processors.
Well, my problem has been resolved! If someone else has freeze screen problems playing some hard games, the problem may be the PSU.

I also have a evga gtx 970 sc and when I played farcry 3 for 10 minuets I would get a black screen. I would then have to restart my computer manually. I was able to fix this situation by doing two things, I disabled my visual effects in windows 7 for farcry 3 and the most important thing I had to do was use vsync because I was always running at 100 percent because of too many fps. I was able to find this out because of the precision x 16 software. I hope this helps.

Two day old GTX970 SC and was getting the same thing here, always on Battlefield 4.  Tried High, med graphics settings, even on Spectator mode.  No dice.  Crashing every game session...black screen....machine acted like it was rebooting, but never would get video to work until power cycle.  Other games seemed fine, but haven't played that many since install, mainly BF4 on Ultra.

    Current system:  MSI Gaming 7 LGA1150, Core i7 4790K, 16GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 2400, Evga GTX970 SC, Rosewill 700 Watt PSU.

I may have found a solution to my issue, but you may not like it if you want a quiet machine.  Go to the fan menu in Precision X, enable Automatic Fan control, and set your curve to start around 40% and go up from there.  Might be able to get away with a lower initial setting, but haven't tried any lower yet.

Or use the Aggressive preset.  Mine idles around 30C so might lower the initial speed to reduce the noise further.  But have it ramp quickly above that temp.  Mine would stay around 51C while playing or running Valley and BF4.

I also have the GTX 970 SC from EVGA. I solved my issue by deleting EVGA Precision X and uninstalling all the Nvidia stuff except the driver of course and Physx.

And do not ever consider putting Physx on the CPU ... The GPU is like 20x faster for this so you will be hurting game performance pretty badly.

Update....after tweaking the fan speeds, no crashes encountered although I had a minor driver hiccup today during an intense game of BF4 on the Lockers map.  The game itself went black, but could see the rest of the desktop.  After a few moments it recovered and I didn't lose my place in game.  Jumped over to Precision X and cranked up the curve a scosh more!  :)

Only thing now is between my liquid cooler and the CPU fans, the computer sounds like a jet engine spooling up.  May have to put it on the floor under the table.  :(

same problem same card. can play witcher 2, and tomb raider. farcry 3 randomly blackscreens to a reset and skyrim cant really even load with some of same problems others describe. have a corsair 750 watt psu so dont think thats the issue. all of these games played fine with a gtx 580 that this card had replaced. have a feeling this is a fundamental hardware issue and am considering replacing with another model. anyone with any idea whats going on, or a fix. wish i had the time to troubleshoot this.

I have the same issue also.
Crashing with black screen on BO2 and Advanced Warfare but not on BO1.
Just bought the card yesterday. Hopefully I get to try another PSU to see if that makes any difference.

Uninstalled everything and installed only driver and physx. No help.

E: Previous card was Asus 560ti top and games ran fine with it. Really dissapointing to see this kind of problems with 970.
E2: Seems that it was my old PSU after all. Nexus RX-8500 cant deliver stable enough power. Not sure but it certainly should be enough power so something is wrong with the PSU.

maybe i'm a little late to this, but I also had the issue of my evga 970 GTX SC crashing (black screen, no signal, hard reset, etc etc)

I had a 600W, and I suspected it was a PSU problem because it would only crash during certain parts of a game that seemed demanding, performance-wise (for me, it was going through a teleporter in planetside 2, which always dips the frames down by 50 for a split second)

Anyways, I upgraded to a 850W and wa la! no more crash. if it comes back, i'll let you guys know but it seems as though the EVGA 970 GTX has a weak spot (or maybe my PSU had a weak spot) for certain in-game events where it has a sudden spike in drawing a **** load of power, perhaps to a point where a 600w PSU can't keep up... MSI 970 GTX people don't have this problem in planetside2..

500w should have been more then a enough for a 970, the TDP on it is only 145w if I remember right. Thats a huge drop from what the 770 takes (220w)
