I'm just wondering if anyone here has a EVGA GTX 970 of any SKU that does not have significant coil whine while folding a core 15 762X WU. I've noticed it in 3 EVGA 970s and am wondering if the components are of such a low quality that every single EVGA 970 will whine with these stressful units. I've had plenty of cards that didn't whine on these units (multiple 580s, multiple 570s, a 560ti 448, and a 460) but I'm getting the impression that all of the EVGA 970s will have a coil whine problem. Just want to hear from others with EVGA 970s with their feedback from folding the core 15 762X workunits.

When I got mine, I got a few core 15's and noticed it. It seemed to get better after a few wu's, then I started a nice run of core 17's (9201) through 10-24 when I stopped. I did not notice any coil whine on those wu's. I switched to crunching on the 25th and have not heard the coil whine there either. I'll start folding again on the 1st or 2nd and if I pick up core 15's, I'll post back.
Core 15's are difficult work units both heat-wise and electrical draw in my experience. Oh yeah, points too!

Yea I had a similar experience with my new gtx 980 reference card. Whined on core 15's during that span of time where all the gtx 980's were getting nothing but core 15's. It did however fade out and become almost silent at the end of the second week. This is literly the ONLY thing that ever made this card whine. No game, no bench and no other computing project has made it whine since.

Also, coil whine has seem to have been a problem with the 970/980 across the board, not limited to just evga. Here is a link to a poll on linus forums and about half of all gtx 970's are whining from all different manufactures.

Core 15 and 17 projects (though forgive me because I don't recall the actual project numbers, surely at least one had to be a 762x though) are creating coil whine on my 2x 970 FTWs, as well. I did just receive them three days ago, so we'll see if it actually does get any better like others are eluding to.

My 970 whines like a banshee on core 15 projects.  Core 17, no problems at all.  The whine has gotten so bad that I have had to put my sides back on my case to drown it out.  I have a Fractal Define XL Black Pearl.  The noise absorbing materials (dynamatt haha) works very well in taking the whine down, but it is still annoying.

2 out of my last 3 Wu's were core 15 762x. The coil whine returned. Shocking!

When my GTX 980 @1500MHz got it first P762x I was a little bit shocked due to the coil whining and the sound of the fans. So it´s not only a GTX 970 problem.
But @1380 MHz the sound of the fans is more dominating than the coil whining.

Remember that folding at home pulls nearly 100 percent GPU capacity. Some forum members report that after a couple of weeks the whine goes down or goes away.

Read back about past GPU launches and you'd think the same thing. The 200 series suffered from it something fierce, lots of people here were complaining about it (out of the three 200 series cards to cross my path, two had coil whine), and while the subsequent 480 and 750 Ti do not my new Titan Black has a really bad droning whine on most Core 17 projects. Bad enough that I stuffed the system in a completely separate room as to not go nuts listening to it.

Adjusting either the load or the power draw can help with the whine. A little OC or underclocking will change the pitch/tone and sometimes completely alleviate it in some cases. Even upping the core voltage a tiny bit without changing the clocks has the potential to make it vanish.
