Hello,

I've been having some problems with this for the past couple of days. I picked up an Acer Aspire TC-605 with Windows 8.1 on it, and tried to install my EVGA GTX 650 card into it. However, whenever I do, I find myself staring at a blank screen with no signs of life in the monitor.

I've been looking around for a while now, and I believe that the solution to my issue can be found by getting some sort of firmware or BIOS update from here for the GTX 650, so that it can work with the UEFI boot mode for Windows 8.1 that Acer has locked me into.

I've already filed a support ticket, but I figure it couldn't hurt to ask here, as well, to have all of my bases covered. If anybody knows where I can find the mentioned update, I'd greatly appreciate it.
If other people have experienced this same issue with Acer motheboards, UEFI boot mode, and GTX 650 graphics cards, I would also greatly appreciate any input you guys have as to this issue.

Thanks,
Jack

    Polk,

I replaced the power supply with a 450 Watt power supply, actually. The stock one didn't even have a 6-pin connector at all to hook the 650 up to.

I'm not sure about the PCI-E slot, but I literally bought this thing two days ago, so I'd hope that the motherboard would be modern enough to not have a PCI-E 1.0 port in it. Is there any particular way I can check? Acer's website doesn't have any of the crucial information about stuff like this.

I've been considering just getting a replacement motherboard, but I'd really rather it not come to that. I lack confidence in my skills in putting stuff like that together. I'm paranoid enough whenever I'm putting in just a GFX card or a new HDD. Replacing the power supply was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences I've had, since I was convinced I was doing everything wrong the whole time. I can't imagine how I'd deal with replacing a mobo.

    Thanks regardless, though,
    Jack

Can you link or tell us the specific model number?  I think the one HotRodPolk is pulling up is and older version as I saw one that showed a Pentium cpu and another that was an i5.

Anyway, tt's probably technically a BIOS issue between the graphics card and the motherboard.  These prebuilt systems are notorious for not being upgrade friendly.  If you have an option in the BIOS for Legacy mode or able to use non-UEFI BIOS that might work.  Otherwise, if you can get a UEFI compatible BIOS for the 650 to flash, that might work too.  Otherwise a mobo swap most likely will get it working too, but not sure want to do that in a couple day old computer.  I would suggest trying the first 2 things I mention first.  If neither of those work, I guess it's decision time if a mobo swap is what you want or maybe cut your losses and try returning that computer and try a more upgrade friendly prebuilt or try building your own.  It is much easier than you think.

Yes, I am referring to an old setup, did not see a newer one with that model number. If just bought meant NEW, then my response would have been different...EDIT: Yes I see the new one now, didn't the first search for some reason...Good catch, Trabe3...

Jack, if this is your rig, then my previous comments are incorrect. You should be able to go into bios and enable pci-e to power up instead of onboard video...I see what happened, I search from title model number, not post...Sorry for the confusion...

    Polk,

That is definitely not my rig. I have an i5 processor in mine.

This is my rig, for reference:

When I check my System, it tells me I have a TC-605. When I checked the sticker on the side, though, it said I had this computer.

It seems Acer can't even get this right.

    Sincerely,
    Jack

EDIT: For some reason, my link doesn't stay when I make my post. The sticker on the side says it's an ATC-605-UB11, though, which I'm sure you can Google.

OK, as I said, that rig should have no problem using that card. Go into your bios settings, and enable pci-e slot for primary video, instead of onboard. Haven't seen that brand's bios so can't say specifically where the setting is at, but search through it, you'll find it...As new as it is, bios should recognize it...

    Polk,

I've searched all through my BIOS settings, and I simply cannot find anything about switching the primary video to the PCI-E slot. Believe me, I've become very intimate with my BIOS looking for a way to turn on Legacy boot in the past few days, and I know for a fact there's nothing about switching the primary video adapter.

    Thanks,
    Jack

Clear CMOS, boot with only vid connected to card. Might work. If you see boot messages at first, then nothing, you're in the ballpark...

Otherwise, call Acer's tech support line, ask them how to enable it...Nothing about it in your owner's manual?

    Polk,

I already tried Acer's support, and the support people themselves didn't even know what they were talking about. A waste of thirty minutes and a headache, that. Nothing in the owner's manual, either, and I surveyed that up and down for another half hour.

I'll try clearing CMOS, though. That sounds like it might do the job.

    Thanks for all the help,
    Jack

If clearing cmos doesn't help, I'd seriously consider returning it, and building your own...If it's not good for upgrades, it's kinda useless. You're already getting a runaround, 2 days from point of sale, not good IMO. Is there a Microcenter near you?

Somehow, that managed to work. I don't know how, but it did. Thanks so much, Polk.

Glad you persevered and got it to work.  So just clearing the CMOS did the trick?

The solution to this is IN THE Bios, it happens to be right under the Authentication tab, and then you need to disable the Secure boot it allows for the legacy to be activated AND all other PCIe cards to work.  three days to find this solution and this was the only post I can remotely get close to the issue I was having.  Thank you for starting it or I would never have found this.
