Hey.

I was just curious whether or not it's safe to have ECO Mode switched on my fan continously. I have my pc on for around 12 hours a day, mostly idle. When I am actively using it, I am normally browsing or playing some graphics intensive games.

Reason being, it's the loudest fan in my rig and its quite irritating, especially when I leave my pc on when I sleep. ECO Mode makes it so much better, but I don't want to wear out any components.

To put it into context on how loud it is for those who don't have the psu. I have a msi twin frozr gtx 770 gfx card, 2 be quiet 120/140mm fans, 2 stock fractal design fans, all in a noise dampened fractal design r4 case. I thought the psu fan would be pretty silent but its actually surprising how loud it is when eco mode is off. I know I can change the fan but I don't want to void the warranty as I just built a few weeks ago.

So yeah, is it safe to turn eco mode on?

Cheers.

is there any way to test function of ECO mode ON with my new 750W G2? I think that psu fan is automaticaly triggered only once so far few days after purchase and now it's off all the time. I tried OCCT psu test for 10 minutes - max temperatures on CPU is 68°C and GPU 74°C (crazy temps) and still don't notice any warm air coming out from psu. I have i5 2500k @ 4,4Ghz and gtx970 @ 1470/8000Mhz. Maybe it's too little challenging for 750W psu or the fan starts to spin in only with very low RPM?

I just want be sure that ECO mode is working all the time without possibly overheating. Thanks.

Get a hair dryer and start blowing hot air into intake. ECO Mode should activate fans once heat gets hot enough

yes its safe, thats what ECO mode is designed for (Economy Mode) it saves on power usage while the system is idle, nothing to worry about.

its better lifetime for the PSU fan as well cause it shuts off completely when in economy mode.

Maybe I will try that idea with hair dryer later. I read on johny guru review this psu works in fanless mode up to 400W load with 28°C ambient temperature. Never had so hot room temperature even in the summer. I guess 26°C was max (now it's around 21°C) and on another PC forum they said that my PC will never reach 400W even with overclock (cpu and gpu without added voltage), so maybe it's answer for me :-)

Also want to ask is it safe for lifespan of psu if I left it in this position or should I turn it upside down for naturally better warm air spread? Downside of this solution is it surely will heat up my gpu.. Thanks.

I tried that hair dryer test like for 10 minutes when system idling and it didn't start cooling at all. How it's possible?

Thats EVGA quality for ya, PSU vs Hairdryer, the PSU wins

yeah, but is there anyone who tried it too in idle? because it can be triggered only by load above 400-600W.

no its fine.... this isn't like PSU's were in the past, Fanless is what people want when the system is idle, and they only need to come on when under heavy load. Maxwell video cards are the same way.

why do you want to get it come on when idle? its working as designed the fan doesn't have to come on if it doesn't need it....

Only under extreme loads (SLI setups + CPU overclock + 100% CPU/GPU load) it would be always running.

    EVGA suppor answer:
    "Hi,
thanks for your detailed request - if the ECO Mode is on, the fan doesn´t spin till the temperatures reaches 45 degrees - please let me know if I can further assist.,"

Hair dryer should be able to blow air with 75°C temperature and not possible to heat up PSU to 45°C?

Is there anyone else who can try this test in idle? I don't sure if it's safe to test by blowing hot air inward of PSU in load :-)

edit: this is on the back side of the box and I guess it means that fan will start to spin at 55°C, right?? And stop spin at 45°C.

I would assume you can, I doubt evga would have added it if it was dangerous to switch while the unit is on. All eco mode does on the psu is control the fan.

if it was a dual bios video card for example with a switch that would be different, then of course you would have to shut down to change that.

todays modern quality PSUs don't really get hot while in idle, they don't even get warm.
you should not forget the PSU fans are performance optimized not silence optimized.
it's normal that they are a bit lauder than your special silence case fans.
the noise optimization of the PSU is it's ECO mode so just use it as it is meant to by EVGA and you're good.

Yes it's safe. I turn on Eco Mode on my 1200 P2.
    I just installed before 2-3h.

I'm keeping eco mode on. That fan is just too damn noisy. Upgraded from a Corsair CX600M and was pretty disappointed when the EVGA turned out to be so loud.

Is buying a PSU with ECO mode, and spending about $20.00 more, really worth it? How much electricity is saved by not running a small fan? Where is the roi (return on investment) ? A year, or when?

My PSU has an ECO mode switch and after trying it I didn't like it. I just tried it out of curiousity and when the fan finally turned on the air was scorching hot and I find that to be unacceptable. I think it is more of a method to keep things quiet than anything else since that fan hardly uses any power at all. I prefer my equipment to be cool not silent and the fan barely makes any noise either.
