After replying to here: forums.evga.com/Kind-of-a-clunk-noise-when-980tis-fans-start-around-the-35-area980ti-SC-m2441737.aspx

I got to test the issue further, downloaded PrecisionX, tried RPM ranges, anything above 1200 rpm, the GPU starts making clicking/rattling noises, increasing the speed to 2000 rpm really amplifies it, at 100%, the rattling is probably still there but more homogenous and undistinguishable

My card coil whines, my case fans are loud, yet this rattling is something else, the sound + worry gives me a headache, I can't use the system

I got the card from Amazon US, I'm in Turkey, the card has 79.6% ASIC, so I would really like to find a delay-less solution to the issue
(The card is almost 4 months old now)

Thanks in Advance

    So here's what I did

    1) Check all the fins, found one loosy, hoped it was the issue, tested, it wasn't the issue
    2) Verified that it's the right fan that is making the noise, not the fins
    3) Observed that heat amplifies the issue
    4) Tried tightening the fan screws, it significantly reduced the noise
    5) Verified the solution, re-tightened the screws when the GPU was warm-ish, indeed the right fans screws were a bit loose while the left one was pretty tight

    ACX Rattle Origins: forums.evga.com/ACX-rattle-noise-problem-fix-m2018526.aspx
I think the OP on this thread indirectly did this too, secured the fan better

Although I significantly reduced the noise and rattling, got it to maybe 30% of what it was, since my ears are tuned to detect it, I can still hear the noise and I'm afraid it will re-increase in some time while the screws get loose again

TL;DR: Tightening the right fans screws reduced the issue, but it's still there and it's related to the right fan ...

    Please advise what to do

    You don't have much choice...
If you locate problem try to fix as other people or send card to RMA.
I can tell you that very small number of people report that problem with GTX980Ti ACX 2.0...
If fan produce noise you can't do nothing. I can tell you my recommendation and I don't know what you think...
If card work normal, stable I would remove that ACX cooler and order Hybrid...
He will drop temps for more than 20C and all noise you hear will gone.
If you send card to RMA and people do that for similar problems you will pay shipping maybe almost as half of Hybrid cooler and plus days without graphic card... Now only stay problem of compatibility your card with Hybrid cooler... For that you need to ask EVGA.

Also, I wouldn't replace the ACX style cooler with the Hybrid. You're not going to have the blower fan to cool the baseplate/ram/vrms.

    Thanks for the suggestions

It's 100% the right fan making the noise, I can set the temperature target to 76C, lock the rpm to 900, the sound is gone, yet whenever the right fan reaches 1200+, the tickling appears, when I slow down the right fan gently, the sound immediately disappears, so it's something with the fan, and nothing else :(

The noise description: Accurately, it's like there is a piece of stone in the right fan, it's like the stone is moving inside the fan, making cracking noises

Q1) It is possible to receive a single fan and replace it myself instead?
Q2) Is the fans separately connected, maybe I could disconnect the right fan and leave only the left fan, or find a circuit to lock the right fan to 900rpm, as it is, I see a possible fan connection on the right, might be a led connection too, I'm not sure
Q3) What is the max safe temperature to run this card, when I set to power target to 94% and lock the rpm to 900, the temps near 90C, doesn't seem to work out well

As it is, I'm using the card practically as a GTX970 with the underclocking I have to do, to keep temps and fan rpm low, even if I set the priority to 82C, the card is at 600mhz under full load, considering with fans the capacity is 1400mhz, 600mhz is sad :(

+ EVGA's reply is a generic coil whine reply, but if you read anything I wrote, you can see it's actually a defective fan

This is a pretty bizarre issue, after maxing out the fans for some time, the noise mellowed out a bit, but it's still there, it sounds like a silent diesel engine

I can RMA but I'm just wondering whether I can buy another ACX shroud, so I can keep it as a spare in case the fan fails?

I think you can find on Aliexpress some ACX coolers, fans, shrouds but I think that's most for previous generation, for GTX700 series.
New fans are with different blades than ex ACX Cooler. And usually even if you find they are very expensive.
If you want something really good than Accelero Xtreme III or IV or maybe some of Accelero Hybrid.

Thanks a lot for the info, just checked the aftermarket vga coolers on newegg, including the accelero ones, none looked promising
Ebay also has some old ACX fans as you mentioned

It's too bad they are forcing people to return the products, I don't want to return a pristine card for a potentially faulty fan, there would be much less waste if they only provided a re-build kit, with a spare fan and potentially some thermal paste to those in need - as the entire block needs to be removed to access the fans, as I see from the photos

The sound is still there but I don't hear it anymore, got used to it, if it's a bearing issue it might worsen in the future, so going the return + re-buy route now is more logical, yet I don't want to deal with it, it would have been much easier to get a fan to replace the existing one when it fails, or when I feel like I could take on the re-building

Just checked Aliexpress - this looks nice:

Are the 970/980 fans the same?

Me too, I would try to keep card even if I need to buy new cooler.
But here with FTW situation is much worse than with Classified > EKWB waterblock, reference > Hybrid, EVGA Hydro Copper or EKWB waterblock, ACX 2.0 > EVGA Hydro Copper or EKWB waterblock. FTW no such options, nothing, only fabric cooler.
It would be much easier if reference turbine stop and you order Hybrid cooler.
Accelero Xtreme III could resolve temp problem nicely and it's not loud cooler.

Like I mentioned at one point, maxing out the fans for a couple of seconds reduced the sound, but it was there for a while

Now after a week, the sound completely disappeared

    1) Either a bearing ball was broken, then crushed to pieces, then to dust
    2) Or it might have been an external particle entering the fan, causing the sound, and getting crushed to dust, but highly unlikely IMO

I don't have a definitive explanation, but I'm just glad things are normal for now, I really didn't want to remove and return the card
