Re: EVGA 790i Ultra FTW BIOS settings 2015/02/04 08:31:47 (permalink)
Thanks for the input everyone. The 3.6GHz CPU speed is about as fast as I'm looking for. So now I will start surfing lower voltages to get the temps as low as possible. Once I find one setting above instability I will drop it back to 3.0 or 3.1GHz and play with getting the FSB and memory to 1800MHz. The Memory is rated to 2000MHz so 1800 should not be a push for it. Then hopefully I'll return to 3.6GHz with the FSB at 1800MHz, and that is where I'll leave it.

With my 2 GTX 690s I'm already getting frame rates of 80 to 100 fps and that is with the CPU at 3.0 and the FSB at 1333. So with only one monitor to drive I'm outside of my screen refresh rate already.

If anyone has low voltage numbers for a QX9650 stable at 3.6 I would be interested. Or settings/voltages for a stable 1800MHz FSB I would be interested in that info too.

I was able to get stable 3.6GHz CPU performance just below at 59C by using 1.25V CPU Core and 1.175V CPU FSB.

Now it is on to finding stability for the FSB at 1800MHz.

That is a good speed for that motherboard.

Sucess!!

When I tried swithching the FSB to 1800MHz everything worked except that my frame rates in Unigine Heaven went from 80 fps to about 15 fps. I tried several other FSB speeds from 1700 to 1800 and all were the same. I tried different voltages and memory speeds and settings and still only got about 15 fps on anything but 1333MHz FSB.

Then I noticed that Prime95 was running a stress test in the background on all 4 cores. Removed the startup of Prime95 and my frame rates on Unigine Heaven are from 100 to 135 fps. Up from 70 to 100 when on default 1333MHz.

My system seems to be stable at 3.6GHz with 1800MHz FSB. Temps are all below 60C. And it has passed several stress tests so far.

Thanks everyone. And special thanks to Bob16314 who put a lot of time in helping me get here.

Congratulations! It's always satisfying when you finally squeeze out a good overclock out of your hardware.

You're welcome, good to know things are stable now ..Core temps below 60C is more than excellent!

4.05GHz with a 9x multiplier and a smidgen more Vcore Without VDroop or just leave it be?..I'm seeing people with +/- 1.4 Vcore in the 4.0GHz neighborhood with that CPU, depending on the VID..Hmmm, sounds tempting

As always, if you can't afford to replace it, don't overclock it too much.

I've left Prime95 running in the background too before and wondered what was "wrong"

Edit: Write down your settings now incase you need to refer to them for some reason.

OK Bob, I could not resist the temptation of your last comment. So I pushed it a little more. I'm now at 3.8GHz. Achieved by 1.2625V, and I remain around 60C under load on air cooling.
It ran stable all day. Games, Prime95, Video encoding, and Unigine's Benchmark programs.
Great idea noting my current settings.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I have a 132-YW-E179-A1 n90i FTW motherboard, I wanted to know which BIOS version worked with 16gb memory?
I found info about the ultra version but none for the FTW.

I honestly don't know if any testing was done beyond 2GB DIMMs per slot.

I did read somewhere that someone had successfully installed and ran 16GB RAM on a 790i FTW, and I remember mention that the BIOS version was important. I can not remember what speed it worked at. Maybe the max speed of the NON 2000MHz slots? I am running 4GB per slot (2 slots only) at 1800MHz currently. And I'm still shopping for another matching 8GB to buy and try, but I'm having trouble finding the exact match to my current memory. (Adata gaming series ddr3 8gb (2x4gb) 2000MHz).
I'm not sure how exact the match needs to be?

I just tried resurrecting my OG 790i FTW with 16GB, at the part where it shows the memory size it just reboots.
I put the print screen where it reboots exactly.

The memory tested is Kingston khx1600c9d3k2/8gx  timing 9-9-9-27

I tried putting the memory at 1.65V after booting with 8gb on 2 slots only, afterwards installed the other 8gb on the other 2 slots like the Ultra SLI folks are recommending.

I've tried this on bios versions SZ12, SZ13 SZ16, SZ17, I couldn't find any other bios versions on EVGA's website.

Folks,

Good news  790i FTW motherboard can work with 16GB without any issues but I had to bastardize it with the Ultra P09/P10 Bios... but everything works fine, I was able to OC x5470 to 4.2 can push it even further but I have to mess with memory settings since my ram is rated at 1600mhz and my FSB was at 420mhz.

I'm not responsible if anyone trying this bricks their motherboard but it worked on my FTW and my friends as well. Please note that both test were done on the non digital version.

I would like to add that an 1800fsb is possible on the lga 775 especially with the 790i ULTRA. It's a good system for what its worth.
