Let's assume that I desolder the DVI connector to convert my X into a single slot card (since with a WB it's pretty much a single slot card aside from the connector).  If the card still works fine and in a year it dies for some random reason, will the warranty be completely void?  I got myself a desoldering station for another project so I'm really itching to remove the DVI connector.

Pardon another 'dumb' question, but what do you gain by making it a single slot card?

The ability to do something like tri-SLI and still having slots free to be able to use a sound / network / whatever card.

If you were to go quad-SLI on a RVE board, you'll use 8 expansion slots but 2 pci-e slots will be unoccupied.  If all your cards are single slot you can have as many devices plugged in as you have slots on your mobo (6 on the RVE).

Roger.  Will be interested to hear from the EVGA folks just to know.  They seem to be pretty awesome about understanding that people actually use their rigs and make changes.

from the warranty definitions the card must be returned in its factory condition. So if you cant put it back as was with no physical damage then you have voided the warranty. They might still work on the card but charge you a fee ,thats a maybe tho.

Desoldering the card would go under "physical damage" and that would void your warranty. This assumes you can't put it back to how it was, but I don't think anyone here can desolder the card and solder it back together perfectly.

Yes, it will void if when you return it for repairs and it doesn't look exactly like it did before; remember: "Good enough" isn't enough, EVGA techs are not fools.  Therefore you must try experimenting on SEVERAL cheaper older cards first since the DVI pinouts haven't changed much in 10 years.  Whatever truss scaffolding setup you create should work on any card that has DVI ports.  Until you're confident that the resoldering on the experimental cheap cards is comes out the same before and after, only then should you risk your expensive main card.

You have to really plan this for it to work, you can't just MacGyver your way all halfassed  If all this sounds like way too much work, then you didn't think this "dumb question" through and you shouldn't try it anyway to see what happens.

BTW, if you want to find more information and detail, I suggest finding another PC enthusiast forum.  EVGA techs/reps don't like it when people play off warranty-voiding experiments as painless and simple as the possibility of other people doing it wrong is high.  If you expect official word, they will vehemently suggest you don't do it.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

OK, gave it a shot an an old GT210.  It's possible to get the connector out.  Getting it out undamaged isn't so easy...and that's with a desoldering station that's meant for this sort of stuff:

I might have to find who the supplier for the double-stacked DVI connector used on the Titan X is.  Would be easier to replace the connector + resolder than trying to desolder and save the original.
