Hey, not sure of all the correct technical terms, but I'm having an issue. Yesterday I plugged in an old ipod into my Windows 8.1 PC. iTunes wanted to do an update, so I allowed it. It needed to restart, so I did.

Now, whenever I boot up my computer, it takes a very long time to get to the login screen. It hangs up at the AHCI options BIOS screen. After about 45 seconds it will discover my drives, primary drive is an SSD, secondary drives are HDD.

Anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?

Clean out your case and blow all the dust out.
Unplug each SATA drive on Both Ends to refresh the metal connection and of you have a DVD/CD to that as well.
Make sure that your old ipod is NOT Connected to your Computer.

Also look at each drive and do a count down, you may have some of them old drives dying on you.
You can also test PreBoot that is one drive at a time to see if it hangs, you are not looking to boot to any OS only testing the SATA Controller.

Cleaning out the case and then refreshing the metal connection appeared to do the trick. My PC boots up WAY faster than it did before the issue. Thank you very much! I have rebooted twice now, and it seems like all of my desktop icons take a good 10-15 seconds before they become visible. Could that just be connected to the drive rebuilding its cache or anything like that?

I guess one more test you can do is power off your computer and unplug the power cable too and let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes. This would rule out that your Bios Battery is still ok. I myself change my Bios Battery every 3 years even if the one is still good.
Glad to see you are back up and running.

I did already let it sit unplugged for a good 10 minutes while cleaning. I also changed my BIOS battery about 2 years ago. Thanks again for the help!

On the "Could that just be connected to the drive rebuilding its cache or anything like that?" delete the file C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\IconCache.db this is the only way I know how to refresh the Desktop Icons.
You need to reboot your computer to create a new IconCache.db file.
