What the heck is all this down sampling business I have been hearing about?! So far from what I have read is that you can modify the refresh rate and resolution on your screen to get a much higher resolution!? I was wondering how if anyone knows the methodology behind this.

I use down sampling for 2560x1440 and sometimes 3200x1800 with my 1080p TV and I can do 60hz all the way up to about 3240x1822. If I want to do something crazy like 3840x2160 I need to lower my refresh rate to 53hz.

Its pretty great. If a game doesn't have AA or if it just has some crappy ON/OFF button for AA. You can go into the resolution settings of the game and choose one of your custom resolutions like 2560x1440. Even for games that have great AA settings I still would recommend using down sampling instead. For games like Crysis 1 and Far Cry 3 which already have plenty of AA options. It definitely looks much better down sampled from 2560x1440 versus just using 1920x1080 with maxed AA.

I have not seen any reports of that happening though. For me the worst case scenario is you get stuck on a black screen or a completely distorted mess of colors and you have to reboot, hit F8 and choose "start windows in low resolution mode (640x480)" Im curious if you'd be able to do 2560x1440 and keep the 120hz. Since I can go all the way up to 3240x1822 at 60hz and my TV can only do 60hz max.

There probably is no risk involved, but it still has to be said when messing with settings. Just saw this also... 120 Hz and 3D-gaming : due to current bandwidth limitations it isn't feasible to downsample down to a 1920x1080 resolution @ 120 Hz. So it is possible but probably wont be easy. also this... For some people using refresh rates that aren't 30 Hz or 60 Hz exact, the custom resolution won't show up ingame OR selecting the resolution in game will make it crash.

Just tried it with my ASUS VH226H. (21.5", 1080P). Very cool, gives me a lot of desktop real estate. Haven't tried a game yet, but this is really neat. 3200x1800 59hz: 2560x1440 60hz: 1080P feels weird now.

U need to raise the pixel clock to something just under 165mhz. For example... set total pixels horizontal to 2400 and vertical to 1145 and test 3200x1800 @ 60hz. Should work.

Yep that worked, thanks! Here's the list of res's I made: 3200x1800 2880x1620 2560x1440 2496x1404 2304x1296 2112x1188 All work at 60hz. All are glorious for games.

Max Payne 3 @ 4KHD on high with 2x MSAA etc gets 30FPS roughly, 2560x1440 with same settings gets 60-70. Not bad for a single 580.

3840x2160 is just so high compared to 1920x1080 that it doesn't look any better than 3200x1800 on my TV. Even if a game runs great at 3840x2160. I'd still prefer running just 2560x1440 or 3200x1800. Anything higher than that doesn't look any better to me. I did just test out max payne 3 at 3840x2160/55hz and was able to keep a solid 55fps. I even was able to record a smooth 30fps video using afterburner. Processing it in vegas now and will upload it to Youtube for kicks since they actually support 4K resolution now. Still doesn't look as good as it should.

So I thought I would chime back in here. I don't use this in Crysis 3 for two reasons. A) it already looks incredible. B) I don't have enough GPU power with a single 480/580. Here are the resolutions I have currently: In the mean time, here's some Battlefield 3 maxed out at 3K (3072x1728)
