I came from the country in which having a firearm is a crime. It never stopped criminals though. I forgot which philosopher said: good people don't need laws and bad people will never folow ones.
I think its a great right to own a weapon. And a great responsibility. Unfortunately many people in this country take it for granted. Im glad that constitution gives me a right to if necessary to defend my friends and family. As many here pointed out: id rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it. I do believe that if you buy a weapon you should have a background check.
There was another good point. Me and my son take walks on the property quite often. My family has 250 acres. We are surrounded by similar properties. Bears, are all over the place. Id rather carry my sd9 then my Winchester 3030. I dont want to kill darn thing just scare it off. We also have some morons trying to impostor as a cops, road rage etc. If you call 911 it takes 45min to an hour for them to get there. You could be dead 10 times over.
I have CCP. After my wife encountered some creep lurking around her SUV while she was breastfeeding our little daughter (she keeps the car locked) she wants one too. I dont blame her.

Depending on their background, i think some weapon owners have a false sense of security, but one must still be vigilant.
And on the subject of laws, I've gone from Georgia to California and gun laws seems to be like night and day.
