Hey guys, I put together a new build for the first time in a long time and I went with a GTX 980 Superclocked by EVGA. It's going pretty well except that the one problem I am having is that my monitor is not always detected when Windows 7 starts. I am connecting through a DisplayPort. About half the time when Windows 7 starts I see the BIOS screen come up and then I see "Windows is Starting" but after that the monitor stops being detected. If I restart the monitor will be detected and works fine but this only happens about half the time I start my PC up. Anyone have any ideas on this?

I too am having DP issues, that's why I'm here. It detects my 4th monitor but will just gray it out when I go to configure it. I can move it and hit apply, but it goes back to not being there after I do that .

I've read there are DP problems and would like a fix. Maybe ????

Me too. Mobo BIOS loads fine. But black screen right when it boots into windows and you get nvidia drivers.

Replugging the monitor does nothing. My 1080p doesnt work either. Restarting doesnt help. I have to restart with my 4k unplugged and only my 1080p to get windows to show. I can plug in my 4k immediately after.

Likely some sort of driver level error.

I've started threads about that exact same issue at the Nvidia forums and overclock.net.

Seems almost everyone with the newest 4K monitors from Asus/Samsung that use displayport are having this issue.

I can use my 980 with any other monitor I own over displayport and have no issues.
I can swap the 980 for a 780 Ti, a different 780 Ti or a Titan and have no issues with the u28d590 over displayport.

Evga tech support hasn't been any help.  I had already tried everything they suggested except for buying an "active" displayport cable.  Against my better judgement, I bought one for $50 and as I expected, it resulted in me wasting my money as it did nothing to help.

    I'm having similar issues.

I have a quad monitor setup, and the monitor on the Displayport (via active DVI adaptor) could (most of the time) be detected by windows 8.1, but would not activate it in the settings.  Replugging in the monitor or reinstalling drivers did not help.  A reboot also did nothing.

The workaround I found that works 100% for me: shutdown, then disconnect power via the switch at the PSU or disconnecting the power cord.  Once rebooted, the monitor works fine unless I reboot or switch between surround mode and extended desktop.

I just stay in surround desktop mode now for all tasks, to avoid the need to shutdown and reboot.  Only down side is now the card idles at about 40 watts, where in extended desktop mode it idles around 12 watts.

I'm sure it's a video BIOS or driver issue that will be addressed at some point.

Manuel, I can run in surround but can not get my  4th monitor to work. It will work in non-surround but is grayed out once I setup surround. Figure it was overlooked in the drivers. Tried all 3 display ports, even tried the HDMI port even though it does not show to use in the Nvidia Surround online Config tool.

Just the GTX 980 as my 780Ti worked just fine with the monitor.

    Gateway FHX 230L monitor x 3 and a Scepter X20WG as 4th .
    344.11 driver

I can run surround, but the DP will not allow me to use it with surround or as my 4th monitor. Confirmed cables and adapters as well as all monitors work with a GTX 760 and an ATI 7970 both. There has to be a DP issue somewhere with all the people having this trouble.

    Thanks for the help.

Same problem on my EIZO S2433W monitor.
    It is a 1920x1200 monitor 60Hz.

Running Windows 8.1 on two EVGA GTX980 SC in SLI.
    BIOS Version 84.04.1F.00.80

It seems an hardware problem, could it be fixed with a bios update?

POSSIBLE WORKAROUND FOR GUYS WITH 4th MONITOR PROBLEMS:
I also have the issue, but what works around it is a super-cold boot -- shutdown and then briefly switching off the power to the PSU before booting.  4th monitor works as long as I don't then switch between extended desktop and surround modes.  Pain in the butt, but I can live with it until we get a real fix.  See if my workaround helps you.

    INFORMATION FOR MANUELG_NVIDIA:
    EVGA 04G-P4-2975-KR GTX970
Video BIOS 84.04.1F.00.72 (bug also in original release version)
    (3) Dell S2230MX and (1) AOC 2267W Monitors (same bug for either)
4th monitor using an Accell B087B-005B-2 DisplayPort to DVI-D Active Adapter
    Windows 8.1

I want to return my cards.
This error feels like an hardware fault and I really doubt they can solve it at a driver or firmware level.
I want my money back if there isn't a solution. This is a defective product.
I paied 1200€ for cards that I cannot connect to a monitor.

There are few "hardware" problems that can't be remedied with a driver or video BIOS update.

    I'm using the Samsung u28d590d 4K monitor.
    My 980 evga sc bios is 84.04.1F.00.80 (P04 B-oard) according to gpu-z.
I also have a second 980 lent to me for testing from another brand.  Just like the first card, it does not boot.
    It's bios is 84.04.1F.00.8B (P04 B-oard)

I know man, I'm in the same boat. I'm about to RMA my card.

the problem is that RMA will not solve your problem.

Yes it will. I have an ATI card sitting right here that works perfectly. I was just wanting something new and cutting edge I guess, so I bought one. I guess I should let them work the bugs out first. The ATI was actually my first non-NVIDIA card, and I've been very happy with it.

I am having the same issue with an Asus monitor running 1440p and 2 samsungs doing 1080p, i started another thread before i saw this one.

Since its 1440p I can run it with a Redmere cable in the HDMI port just fine, but the displayport won't work unless I unplug one of the other monitors.  Its like it can't handle it.  It detects the monitor, but won't let me enable it.  When I try the screen flickers for a bit, then goes back to being disabled.

I can live with it being on the HDMI cable as the redmere has enough bandwidth, and it reduced my framerate stutter when I switched from a standard HDMI cable. That might not work with folks running 4k, you can try though, 6ft 10.2GB/s cables are pretty cheap at newegg or monoprice if you can give it a whirl in the mean time.

The new 344.48 WHQL drivers seem to fix all my DisplayPort issues.

Display on DP works after a restart, without needing to shutdown and disconnect power from PSU before rebooting PC.  Display also keeps working after switching between surround and extended desktop.  I think I'm all good now!

Now, if Nvidia could just figure out how to cleanly switch between surround and extended desktop mode as well as AMD does it.  Sigh.  Well Nvidia finally forced me to find workarounds to most of the issues with using surround mode on the desktop, so I don't really feel the need to switch between them anymore.
