HalloweenWeed GaretJax84 did you try playing around with the tRL settings? Also try VTT in the range of 0 to +100 (when no CPU OC) And I assume you plugged in your mfg spec latencies manually? Unfortunately it may be that you are using OCZ RAM too. Is there any way you can swap RAM with somebody else temporarily to test that? Are you positive that all sticks are fully seating in the sockets? What PSU do you have?

I did manually plug in the mfg spec latencies. It may be that I'm using OCZ RAM, who knows.

I tried the VTT, but even bumping it up to +25 mv caused the computer not to start. I had to restart the CMOS. Could you be more specific on what the tRL and VTT settings are?

Unfortunately I don't have someone I can swap RAM with. I believe it may something else considering the OS is able to pick up the correct amount installed into the DIMMs, it's only the usable amount that is unstable. It actually swaps between 16GB usable and 8 GB usable depending on the restart. If I can solve what's causing that unstableness then I'm sure I'd figure out the issue.  Maybe it's the CPU? :D

Everything is fully seated. I'm not sure it's the DIMM sockets now. The OS is able to see what's really installed, all of it is just not available.

PSU = Cooler Master 1000W Silent Pro

I seen an article about the exact same prob you have, it turned out to be the CPU. It was a link posted on this forum last Fri or so. About tRL, it first appeared here:

EVGA X58 Motherboards - BIOS 73 Released

It gives a very brief explanation, if you could call it that. Other than that, I just know ppls are saying that when they OC if they set it to "+2" it works. As for VTT, the memory controller, you just have to set it at what works for you. For instance mine works best at very low voltages, even lower than the newer BIOSes allow. So no, I can't be more specific about either.

Alright. Thanks for your assistance. I greatly appreciate it.

I'm assuming it's the CPU now, but the only way to test that would be to plug it into another machine or plug another one into mine. Throwing more good money after bad. Not to mention my ability to return the CPU or get a new one is probably limited since I don't have the original box or stock heatsink.

Thanks again for your assistance. I'll just keep playing with it and if I ever succeed I'll let you know. :D

2 sticks of 2GB G.skill Ripjaws
Intel I7 -920
Venomous RT-Cooler X

Alright.. So i have a problem i have 2 sticks of G.Skill Ripjaws adding up to 4GB so 2GB per stick... I tried each of the sticks in Dimm 5 to make sure both sticks were compatible and working correctly and it ended up both sticks worked... So in Dual Channel DIMM 1 works perfectly but it seems DIMM 3 just doesn't even start i try and start my computer with 1 stick in DIMm 3 and it does even give me anything on my Monitor  ER 68 Codes pop up on my motherboard...

I Called the EVGA support and he wants me to take out My CPU and try it in a different motherboard to see if its my CPU which i highly doubt.. He doesn't want to think that maybe DIMM 3 is faulty... So i am really down and confused and need some help... i went into bio and changed to Frequency and Timings yes... but thats all i did...  I tried both sticks in DIMM 5 and they worked perfectly and i tried both of them in DIMM 1... but when i got to DIMM 3 neither of them worked....

Also to add: When i press the power button on my computer it starts up  for 5 seconds then shuts down 5 seconds later it fully starts up with no problem at all...

Another Note: At First I could not even get the board to start up and then i found out by talking to the guy at EVGA that it was a grounding issue in my case... and i fixed that problem by putting a coupld of those little gold screws in the bottom of my face so my board would not touch the case..

I'm having a similar issue but my system always sees the full 6G on a cold start and loses 2GB on reboots.

As for the issue above, this is normal when starting your PC after the PSU has been turned off in the back or has been unplugged.

The most probable sad thing is that it is not a motherboard problem. You may have already read this whole thread, but if not, it is imperative that you do. Every setup issue is here already.

I had this problem. Went to microcenter and they determined IN MY CASE (capitalized because there has to be more than one cause for this) i had a hardware problem. So since I was within 30 days, and after a convo with EVGA support (who was not fast to blame everyone but them which makes me glad that I went with EVGA due to them being willing to site their hardware as a potential culprit), I exchanged my mobo, cpu, and changed from corsair ddr3 2x2gig 1600 (dual channel) to 2x3gig patriot ddr3 1600. Loaded win 7 64-bit and it recognized all 6 gigs. Let it be known that I did not do a fresh install of windows 7 from when my computer only recognized 1.99gigs of 4 gigs from before. This eliminates windows 7 as the cause in my opinion.

My problem started after a BSOD coming out of sleep mode btw, so it was fine for a while. Also my comp is a new build (1 week old).

Again this is what happened IN MY PARTICULAR CASE....

If things change I will be sure to update and I will help anyone where I can if they want more details, etc.

In your case, or for that matter for anyone else with this *mysterious* problem, you went the luxurious route and replaced all the usual suspects, which undoubtedly made for a quick and certain positive fix. I think you did the smart thing. Good advice for everyone.

I had this problem today.  Since I just swapped everything over to the X58 LE, I was fairly certain I had the cpu inserted correctly.  I also only firmly tighten the locking nuts so was certain I did not over tighten either.

Well I read through this and got some pointers from my good buddy Lee on here and I think it is fixed by uping the QPI and IOH volts to 1.2 and setting the lowmem setting to my vid card's amount.

Before if I cold booted it was fine and saw all 6gb but if I restarted I lost 2.

After setting these I restarted 3 times and it still saw all 6gb so (knock on glued sawdust) it seems fixed.

What I have learned is that this problem can be basically anything. That's what makes it so hard to troubleshoot and diagnose.

I literally tried everything under the sun. Played with BIOS settings from timings, voltages, Strap, underclock, overclock, everything. I reseated and tested ram in each slot, took out the CPU 2x!

After everything it was the RAM. The RAM tested fine in Memtest86 but I guess it was just an incompatibility with this board.

I was running Corsair and now have G.Skill DDR3.

I think the most important lesson from this thread is that this really is just one of two things: Bad settings, or placement/installation of hardware, or an actual hardware problem!

So although the problem can be caused by many different things, if you have tried changing almost every setting under the sun, reseated your CPU, flashed your bios, cleared your bios, played with voltages, QPI, clocks, played with DIMMs, timings etc. etc. etc...and you still have the problem,

THEN YOU PROBABLY HAVE A FAULTY PIECE OF HARDWARE AND RMA IS IN ORDER! :)

So even though playing with settings might work for someone, don't discount the fact that you might have a hardware problem or incompatibility somewhere along the line!

had the same problem,
by setting my QPI to 210 RAM did show up again, the problem ocures when i had qpi betwean 180 and 210.
now i just went from 21 x 200 to 20 x 210, have the same clock on CPU and 6GB RAM with 1680 MHz speed.

Re:Disappearing Ram 2011/03/18 03:59:02 (permalink)
Alright, I just figured out I had this problem and came upon this thread after hours of net searching.

I'm not OC'ing. I'm running stock on everything. I'm 99% sure my computer POSTed with 6 gigs, and that Win7 detected and used 6 gigs, as of a few months ago. Now, however, I have the same problem as everyone else here.

Thing is, I may or may not have isolated this to DIMM 5. I can run 4 gigs in DIMM 1 and DIMM 3 together with no problem. When I try to pair DIMM 1 and DIMM 5, however, the computer POSTs with 2 gigs, while Win7 sees 4 installed and only uses 2. When I fill in DIMM 1,2,3 I get 4 gigs POST, 6 gigs installed and only 4 used in Win7.

Now, I could try monkeying with all these settings, but it's frustrating to think that I have to simply to get this to work. On the other hand, with DIMM 5 acting the way it is I'm afraid that I've got a faulty mobo... I haven't tried reseating the CPU yet. That's tomorrow. But honestly I don't know why it would have been working months ago and then now its not. Could it be just that one slot?

I'll swing through again tomorrow and post my entire template if I need to, but right now I'm running an X58 SLI with an i7 and a G.Skill tri-channel memory kit with ALL auto settings in the BIOS.

Alright, digging up this thread a few weeks later when I have some time to work on the computer... Everytime I set the BIOS to AUTO for DIMM voltage it sets itself to 1.7v. I don;t know how long it was doing that. I've got a set of g.skill 9-9-9-24 2.5v DDR3 1600, and I have no idea why it defaults that high. I also have to set the timings on my own, because it tries to default the timings to something ridiculous like 7-7-7-20 1T.

I just reseated the CPU and I'm still getting this stupid problem. I'm startin to get really frustrated, because this just simply isn't something that should be happening.

And HalloweenWeed, while I wasn't sure about the slot usage individually, your comment wasn't really super helpful. Well, except for RTFM. That was super constructive and insightful, so thanks for that.

Alright, digging up this thread a few weeks later when I have some time to work on the computer...
a) " Everytime I set the BIOS to AUTO for DIMM voltage it sets itself to 1.7v. I don;t know how long it was doing that."

b) " I've got a set of g.skill 9-9-9-24 2.5v DDR3 1600, and I have no idea why it defaults that high. I also have to set the timings on my own, because it tries to default the timings to something ridiculous like 7-7-7-20 1T.

c) ''I just reseated the CPU and I'm still getting this stupid problem". I'm startin to get really frustrated, because this just simply isn't something that should be happening.

Hi there.
a) I would recommend setting your ram voltage manually. 1.65 is a typical voltage for ram on x58 platform, though manufacturers started coming up with lower voltage ram kits like 1.5, 1.35 volt kits look at you ram specs and set it in bios accordingly. 1.7 it a bit on the high side. 1.65 what Intel max recommended voltage on internal memory controller (IMC)
b)  - set of g.skill 9-9-9-24 2.5v DDR3 1600,  I dont know any ram kits with such high voltage. So lets say its a typo. If you intend to run your ram at 1600mhz speed.
example:  your Bclk is 160, you ram ratio is 2:10 = 1600mhz and CPU speed is 3.36ghz then you set you timing according to what it says on the sticker of you modules. If you running it at default speeds than you bios will automatically load default speeds for 1066mhz ram - which is that 7-7-7-20 you were seeing in bios I believe. ( you have to see what ratio is closer to you ram speed, for 200 QPI bclk you ram ratio would have to be 2:8, 8*200 = 1600. and so on)
You also need to bump your Vtt voltage as you go with higher QPI clock.
QPI pll voltage needs to be somewhere 1.2-1.3v YMMV
In my first post there some more tweaks you can try in bios.

and c) what kind of cooler do you have. (for the future reference its nice to let people know what hardware you have - mobo, cpu, ram, psu etc., it might help with detecting the problem ;) )
If its one of the big ones like Nochtua, Megashadow or alike. try relieving the tension on the cpu, cause its known to case the missing raM issue.

d, e, f, etc., ) look through this thread and others. there are planty advice. And if none works then swapping the ram with the new one might be the only option.

Good luck and hope it helped.
Ghost :)

Hey sport, as long as you are using "auto" or "XMP" for ANY the following:

  • Memory speed
  • Memory freq
  • DIMM V
  • tCL
  • tRCD
  • tRP
  • tRAS
  • Command rate

you will experience hiccups. May be occasional, or constant. Just set them manually, and use either "auto" or "DIMM ratio" for MCH strap.

Overclocking is useless to me if it is not rock stable.

Iamrogue

RAM is found
had the same problem,
by setting my QPI to 210 RAM did show up again, the problem ocures when i had qpi betwean 180 and 210.
now i just went from 21 x 200 to 20 x 210, have the same clock on CPU and 6GB RAM with 1680 MHz speed.

This guy has the key!

Ok so i have 6 sticks of 2gb corsair and when i over clock past 881 my ram drops to 4GB,  when i go past 200 or so it will boost to 8gb and then once i pasted 213 BINGO 12gb found.

My current overclock is 21x213 a bit over 4.4 GHZ

Re: Disappearing Ram 2015/04/14 08:09:40 (permalink)
I had the same issue after exceeding a CPU BCLK of 145. 2GB of my Ram became unusable. I tried almost every solution in various threads. Decreasing VDIMM voltage, increasing QPI, increasing IOH Vcore etc. What I did notice is that after setting my MCH Strap from auto to D:RAM Ratio, the issue was resolved. When setting MCH Strap back to auto, bam! I lost 2GB. SOLUTION: Set MCH Strap to D:Ram Ratio !
