So, I have come across some free cash, and wanted to upgrade my current GPU, 980 Ti hybrid. I will be running at 2560x1440 144hz Asus ROG.

I have been looking and looking to see what ppl are doing either 2 1070 SLI, or a single 1080. Some reviews I ran into showing that in some cases the 1080 is better, and then the 1070's SLI are better. Nothing seems to be very consistent.

Wanted to reach out here get suggestions, opinions and general thoughts to this upgrade. I have $800 USD to spend.
2 1070's would be roughly 800 after taxes and rebates.
1 1080 hybrid would be around 750+ ballpark area depending on where I buy it from.

I want to eventually go 3k, the 34 Acer Predator or something similar as higher res, higher hz monitors mature.

Thanks!

Go with the 1070's if all the games you will be playing support sli.

You could wait for the 1080Ti. Your 980Ti should be more than enough untill the 1080Ti releases. Also if you play a lot of different games, there's potential for non-sli support. But if you only play major AAA titles then SLI would be worth it. Going up from your 980Ti to a single 1080 will not be that much of an improvement. A 1080Ti will be the king of the mountain so I'd hold off for that, plus you don't have to worry bout SLI.

I would sideline any SLI plans atm Sli isn't working real great in several games with the 10XX series cards. Not that it won't get fixed but currently their are issues. If I were you, I'd wait till January and get the full stack GP 102 1080Ti and forget Sli idea. I have the Evga 1080 F|E, its plenty for 1080p, but if you plan on running a higher res like 1440 or 2180, I'd shoot for the 1080Ti, if you must order cards right away I can't stress enough that the F|E are the best cards out there, as far as "problem free" goes. Some of the SC/FTW cards need Bios updates, and as you can see there are several threads in here surrounding those type cards. Blacks Screens, crashing, temp issues, thermal pad issues, etc. The F|E have had 0 issues, me and couple of my friends all bought the F|Es 1080/1070s and have been very happy with them. Fan is silent and my 1080 hasnt broke 64C to date in any game or benchmark.

Thanks for the input so far guys. Had to put the family dog down today, so I have not had a chance until now to get on and see what everyone has said.

I guess the next dilemma is. I will have the money, but my wife likes to get ideas. So I may need to grab something guild so she doesn't see a new shiny puppy, or couch or something lol.

Keep them coming.

I've have the 1080 ftw hybrid for a over a month now and I'm happy I got this over alot of the others 10 series card from evga had heating problems. The only problem is the stock fan for the watercooler is a bit noisy but I might fix it with a more silent one. If you must buy a card now and what to use all the money up get this one. The hottest I'm reaching around 50c.

P.S my previous card was a 660ti ftw so I needed the upgrade and could not wait any longer.

Ok, little update. I had a line on a Titan XP, that fell through. My budget has bumped from 800, to 1200. Now I have a few more options.

Open to other suggestions!
