If I was getting a 770, I would get the highest clocked card. This way I don't have to worry about manually overclocking. I would get this one:

    Just buy this one.

Comes with the titan cooler which has a vapor chamber for better cooling. Check.
Vents the hot air outside the case unlike the ACX version. Check.
Uses reference clocks for better stability. Check.

I would only buy the classified version if you want higher benchmark scores. I've seen tons of posts on the forums from people who have bought the higher clocked versions of the 770's & 780's complaining about unstable cards at stock clocks. I've seen very little complaints about the reference style cards being unstable at stock clocks.

EDIT: This backs up what I just said.

Try to find something refurbished if you want cheap. I bought the 780 Classified for $500 Refurbished works great have no problems. If you do insist on staying with the 770 then go for a superclocked GPU all tweaked and ready to go.

Well, I can understand private party in the context of EVGA products, as most of the cards available now have a transferable warranty, and you could end up with a mostly full warranty at a cheaper price than retail.  If it's a recertified card, on the other hand, it's only going to be a one-year warranty.

When it comes to which of the 770's to buy, first figure out if you want the 2GB or 4GB version.  After, determine whether the heatsink/fan is more important than the factory overclock, or vice-versa.  As far as the clocks go, I'd probably suggest to get the one at the best price, as usually two or more versions are around the same price.  It's too difficult to tell if one card is going to be a stunning overclocker or a dud, and over time you may not be that interested in trying to keep a manual overclock stable.

well, I think if you going to go, go big. That way if you ever decide to upgrade something else on the rig, the card will be good for years to come ! MY suggestion to you (http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=03G-P4-2783-KR) I alway go by (3) things, Vram, Cuda cores, texture fillrate .

its $20 more than the EVGA 770 new! Its refurbished but works like new (hence refurbished). I was scared to buy my refurbished 780 Classified but I don't regret it one bit saved $100! I highly recommend it, If you willing to go over your $400 budget.

With the GTX870 and GTX880(rumored to be) 2-3 months away, might want to hold out just a bit, either the 770 will drop in price or the 870 will be in your budget.

With luck, you'll be within that 90 day window if/when the 800 series comes out.  Let us know which card you ultimately chose.

Don't disappoint yourself too much. When I got my 780, all I was concerned with for like 2 weeks was finding the absolute best OC I could. Truth is, when I finally started enjoying my card (gaming), overclocking really didn't matter too much. For example, in Skyrim I would see maybe 7fps difference from a massive OC.

I just picked up a 770 off another member here. When I get it, I will do initial benchmarks and stress tests to determine its performance, bump it to a mild OC (5-10%) and call it a day.
