I have an Asus M11AD PC (Windows 10). It works fine, but I wanted to support 3 monitors, so I bought an EVGA GeForce GT 720. The Asus Power Supply is only 300 Watts, and I chose the EVGA GeForce GT 720 as a low-power graphics card with multiple positive reviews for supporting 3 monitors, and I don't need high performance (little or no gaming, occasional HD video watching, but mostly text and low to medium-res graphics).

Installing the card, I noticed that the only slot(s) available were longer than the connector on the card, but I found some instructions online that indicated it should still work. I seated the card as per instructions, then started up the PC, and there was no video output at all from the graphics card. I tried reconnecting to the on-board video (VGA) and restarting, but got no video from that, either. Totally blank screen in both cases, but the disk & system sounds were consistent with a normal startup.

I pulled the card and restarted, and everything runs fine again with a single monitor running from the on-board connector (VGA).

I did not pre-install the included drivers, and of course while I had no video signal I could not do so. That is my next step, but I thought I would check here to see if anyone had any other thoughts. I'm doubting that the drivers alone will solve the problem, because even the on-board video failed to work when the card was installed. I don't mind upgrading the Power Supply if that is the problem, but I hate to bother if the card still won't work after I do so. And frankly, that would basically defeat the whole purpose of choosing the GT 720 in the first place. If I had the wattage, I probably would have bought a more powerful graphics card in the first place.

I would upload a photo, but with 500 kB max, I doubt it would be of much use.

Thanks in advance for any useful advice.

Update your motherboard bios to version 0602 then try the gt 720 again.

Welcome to the forums..Even though a GT 720 goes into and is supposed to work in a PCIe x16 slot like your mobo has, it's a PCIe x8 interface card (see the Details) which is not as long as a full-length/bandwidth x16 card..Cards that are full-length/bandwidth x16 take up the whole slot.

Your mobo manual implies there may be two versions of your PC..One with a UEFI BIOS which is shown on page 72, and one without (Legacy BIOS), but I'm not sure..Your PC probably won't work with a card newer than something in the NVIDIA 600 series if it's a legacy version..But yes, update the BIOS and see if that hopefully fixes it..If not, you need a 600 series or earlier card.

Thanks so much -- it worked a charm (see picture now attached to original post).

Always nice to see such prompt & helpful responses in a newly-joined forum; one never knows if newbies with far less expertise than the current denizens will be ignored and/or mocked, but it's clearly very much the opposite case here.

FWIW, my machine does have the UEFI BIOS, and the NVIDIA driver installation was irrelevant, since I couldn't actually complete its installation until a suitable graphics card was installed. I now have more than triple my previous monitor space (1 x 27" + 2 x 24" vs. previous 1 x 23"), and the i7-4770S CPU is benchmarked more than 3x the speed of the ancient HP I just retired.

Oh, and in case anyone is worried about ergonomics based on the picture, fear not. I am in the midst of a complete home office overhaul, and I'll deal with ergonomic issues as part of that. Just wanted to demonstrate that your kind advice was indeed helpful. Thanks again!

Sure thing, glad the BIOS update fixed it..Also know that when a graphics card is detected in a PCIe/PCI slot, the onboard/iGPU graphics is auto-disabled unless manually set from Auto (the default setting) to iGPU/onboard..That setting is usually located in the BIOS -> Advanced -> System Agent Configuration -> Graphics Configuration -> Primary Display options (Auto/iGPU/PCIE/PCI), which is why you didn't get video from the mobo VGA connector (the GT 720 was still in the slot and the Primary Display was on Auto, giving preference to the GT 720)..When you removed the GT 720, it auto-switched back to using onboard/iGPU graphics..Leaving it on the default Auto setting is best.
