lol, I feel ya. I graduated last December and I've been wanting to do this build for so long!

I got all the tubing sized and lit up the pumps, it was magnificent! Hopefully no leaks are evident when I get home from work today. I didn't pull my laptop out last night so still no pictures... Soon I promise!

LEAK TEST: SUCCESS!

Well, it's been a long road and I must say it was a lot of fun. I've gotten mostly everything put together minus my AQ5 which is still MIA.. a few temperature probes and some SATA cable sleeving, which I ran out of. I've got an order into MDPC so it should arrive sometime next week.

With D3 release right around the corner, I wanted to make sure that everything was in working order. After the leak test I neatened all the cabling and bolted on the doors for the first time (WOW! THERE WERE A LOT OF SCREWS... ) I'm VERY impressed with the results, of which being my first completely custom loop. I used MX-4 temporarily on my CPU just to see if everything is working. When I tear the system down to install the AQ5 I will put the Indigo Xtreme in place. My idle temps with MX-4 and the new setup are ~10C cooler and load temps are ~15-20C cooler with the same ambient temps. I can't wait to install the Indigo Xtreme!! My only complaint so far is the fan noise, it's a little bit loud for my tastes but there isn't much else I can do until the AQ5 arrives.

Also, there seems to be a problem with the flow meter, it's making and annoying ticking sound, which becomes faster or slower dependent on what variable speed I have the pumps on... I've got an email in to Aquacomputer so I'll have to wait to see what they say. I did a quick Google search and it seems like I'm not the only one experiencing this, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Now on to the pics I've been promising... lol

The cabling here will be a bit cleaned up when I get the AQ5 and my remaining sleeving, the rad fans aren't sleeved either because I didn't know how long to make them.

Fill valve and snap caps for the M4 radiator screws.

I ran the tubing into the bay because I didn't have a 90 degree connector to angle directly into the flow meter from the res. When I get the AQ5 this will be cut and the waterblock will be attached.

A few pics in the dark with the door off and with the replacement RED LED vandal switches.

Hope you all like, more pics to come when I get the AQ5!

I heard back from Aquacomputer. They told me to fix it with a hammer.

Hello Nathan,

a slightly ticking noise is possible du to production tolerances.

You could the the following. Remove the stainless stell top and remove the plastic top underneath too so you have access to the impeller. You can easily take it off. Make sure that the impeller, the axis and the chamber is clean.

Make sure that the top of the axis is spiky. If it is flat, the axis was mounted upside-down which is wrong. You should be able to remove it with a pincer and place it the correct way.

You could also give it a try to use a hammer and beat the axis on the top since it is possible that the axis is not deep enough in the opening. In this case the impeller would touch the cover. There is no reason to worry when using the hammer since the drilled hole will stop it in the correct position.

kind regards

I did open the device up once so I probably just installed the actuator incorrectly like he mentioned. I think I will drain the system tonight and check this out and maybe install the Indigo Xtreme while I'm at it.

I'll update with my findings.

I can't wait either.. Still waiting on my fan controller (which still has no eta...) to finalize everything.

I returned my noisy flow meter and got another one shipped out from FrozenCPU, but I have yet to install it in my loop to see if the issue is resolved. More updates to come when I get my fan controller and everything finished.

Re:Project LD PC-V8 H2O Overhaul 2013/12/13 20:28:28 (permalink)
So I just wanted to touch base on this post as it's been quite a while yet it's still a work in progress. The cooling overhaul has been completed, and I apologize for not updating with pictures when I received my AQ5 and got everything installed and working. Everything worked without a hitch and I think the cabling from all my fan channels and temperature probes to the Aquaero 5 turned out great! Here's a few pics of the installed AQ5:

 [pardon the bit of dust!]

The reason I've decided to revive this thread is because I've made the commitment to upgrade the internals as it's been a bit over 4 years since the primary components were purchased. Since my last update to the thread in May 2012, my 295HC has finally dropped out of warranty and died. I ended up purchasing an EVGA GTX 670 4GB FTW with an EK CSQ block to replace it as the 680's were completely out of stock at the time. It's been running decent for my needs and I still want to eventually add another or maybe some 780 classys, if I can actually catch them in stock.

With this build comes a bit of thought regarding something that I've wanted to do some time now. I've had a set of RAID-0 SSDs, but I've always had the urge to build and tinker with a RAM drive. This was my chance so I seized it . Due to hardware constraints, my options were limited to find a motherboard which supported eight DIMMs for 64GB total and it would have to be Ivy Bridge-E as it was really my only logical choice. After all my research, I decided to go with the RIVBE as it was a recently released and because the RIVE had stellar reviews along with easy overclocking of memory. After a bit of waiting when it was initially released, I finally received the auto-stock notification via Newegg and jumped on the purchase last weekend. Here's a pic of what I received.

Since the picture is a bit terrible, here's a summary and a few more pics:
  • ASUS RIVBE [EK full board waterblock still pending, ETA mid December (this week? )]
  • Intel 4930K [Batch 3330B449]
  • 64GB G.Skill 2400 OC Ripjaws [8x 8GB]

I've ordered my EK Supremacy Full Copper block for the CPU and once the motherboard block is announced, I'm hoping to snatch one up. Then I'll be able to determine placement and what, if any re-situating I'll need to do to fit the new motherboard.

Let me know if you have any questions or would like to see more pics before I start replacing components.

Thanks, your build is a beaut too!

The faceplate came from FrozenCPU I believe. It was purchased back in April 2012, but I'm assuming it's still available.

I tore down my rig last night to clean and to find out exactly what modifications I'll need to put in place with the replacement motherboard. Since all the cables were made and sleeved from scratch I'll have to redo/add a few things. From my initial notes the following needs to get done in order to accommodate the new motherboard:

1. Make a 4 pin CPU cable for the extra power connecter for memory slots.
2. Since the ROG boards have the "simple" chassis connectors I'll need to purchase two more cables for my vandal switches and wire them up to the new specification.
3. Sleeve the OCBot cable and power connector.
4. Buy more tubing as I'll most likely need to re-route the loop and I only have a few feet remaining.
5. Buy EK RIVBE block when it comes out.
6. Contemplate whether to buy EK memory kits to replace these ugly GSkill memory heatsinks.

More to come as I progress in the build!

After tearing down the chassis and installing the new motherboard, I just noticed that my EK blackplate on my graphics card is changing colors... from black to purple..? It seems like it's tarnishing or something and I cant seem to buff/remove these areas. I haven't tried anything harsh.. just a bit of water and elbow grease with no luck. Has anyone run into an issue like this before? I've been rather careful to not use anything other than water when wiping down or cleaning any dust and I'm not sure what would cause this kind of reaction. Maybe oils from skin?

/sigh..

I have never seen this before. You should email EK and ask them what might've happened.

Mmmmm. Sexy.

After remaking a few cables and adding some that were specific to the ASUS layout, I finally got everything put back in the case. Only one piece of hardware is still pending, and that's the EK RIVBE full board block. According to the EK rep on the forums, it was supposed to be out last Friday or today in which we haven't seen either... This will be at least a few weeks out since it'll be shipping from EU anyway.

Upon first boot all looks good in the BIOS and I've started a memtest to make sure all 64GB is working properly. Once I get home from work I'll take a few pics and update the thread. Any idea how long it will take to memtest all 64GB?

lol! Well TBH, I've just been really busy. I received my EK R4BE and memory blocks back on Jan 4th and I just got around to installing them last night. I'm getting Windows 8.1 installed ATM and will be posting more pictures here shortly. Hopefully tonight! Here's a teaser from the install prior to last nights rebuild and some misc pics.

Re:Project LD PC-V8 H2O Overhaul [completed w/ pics!] 2014/01/24 16:11:56 (permalink)
Hey Gents,

Well, I'm just now getting around to finalizing everything and I wanted to finish the update as well. I've taken a few pictures of the process, but it's not as detailed as my initial build log 1.5 years back. Since most of the build was essentially completed, I only needed to make a few modifications to accommodate the new parts… Based on my previous post, here is what was accomplished for the build:
  1. Add 4 additional pins to my original CPU cable for the additional pin out.
  2. As the ROG boards have a “simple” chassis connector, I needed to break apart my original cable made for the previous EVGA board and wire it up to match the new specs.
  3. Sleeve the OCBot cable and power connector. I’m not sure I like how this cable fully came out. Due to the massive connector that I couldn’t take off, the sleeving I had to fit over was partially too big… Causing it to look a bit odd. I guess it looks okay, you only really see it at the bottom where it connects to the motherboard.
  4. Replace standard R4BE heatsinks with the EK counterparts.
  5. Replace stock memory heatsinks with EK ram kits (just for the looks).
  6. Install Demcifilters on the top and bottom radiators (these things are awesome!).
That just about sums everything up. This build took me a bit longer to get everything in because I was strapped for time since the beginning of the year with work and various training courses I’ve been taking. Hopefully the wait wasn’t entirely too long for everyone! Anyhow, here are the finalized pics.

Installing the blocks:

As for the EK parts, the waterblocks are top notch as always, however, the RAM modules were kinda sketchy. Even being super careful I managed to strip out some of the holes. I think the problem was with the depth of the screws, they provide M3x5mm length screws, but the holes seem to be threaded for M3x7mm length screws. One was so bad that I could not straighten the screws at all, and ended up stripping the top and middle holes. Of course when I installed this heat sink and turned my case upright, it fell right off... Luckily I had some M3x7mm screws, which I was able to use in conjunction with a plastic washer. @EK, you guys should send M3x6mm screws with the kit. I think it would fit a lot of issues that I encountered.

As for the OCBot, here's what it looks like from the outside and inside with the custom cable.

With this being a E-ATX board, I physically had the room, however, the motherboard tray was too close to immediately turn the SATA cables directly off the motherboard and go out that first hole, and I figured it would look a bit weird if I ran them out the secondary holes. With this in mind, I ended up putting them through the bottom, I think it turned out quite nicely.

You can also see the case/OCBot cables, the sleeving is a bit too large, but I didn't have another size that fit tighter, unfortunately. I'll just have to live with it.

Here's some of the cable management pics:

Cabling was a bit tight as I didn't previously take into consideration to make slightly longer cables when I specced them for the old motherboard, luckily it worked out though.

Here's the pics of the inside with all the new blocks installed:

Soo, I have to say it feels good to have everything put back together. I've had the sides off the case for the past year now, but now that everything is finished, I've closed it up. I bought two Demcifilter filters for both radiator intakes, the bottom is mounted on the inside and the top is mounted on the outside because I would have to cut through the screen otherwise. Say goodbye to dust issues!

Hope you all enjoyed!  Let me know if you have any questions.

I just ordered this case. I've been wanting it since its release and finally have the funds. It should be here Monday. I do have a question about the bottom radiator spacing. Is there enough room to run 38mm fans and two rads? I want to do fan-rad-fan-rad if possible. Will the sides close or would the fans be too thick?

I'm amazed by how well you nailed the sleeving of the PSU. I once built two systems with the X-660W (amazing PSU btw!) and the modular design was sooo confusing.

Really nice setup. 27*C on the CPU is a great achievement. Good work

The nice thing about the bottom of this case is that you can practically use side-to-side. I'm pulling with these as I only have a single set of fans and by doing so, the radiator sits flush on the door. I think this question revolves around the specific rads you'll be using and the tubing leading in and out. Based on the width of the case, 220mm, and my black ice SR-1 rads, I'm pretty sure you could pull this off. With fan, rad, fan, rad, you'll essentially have 36mm of space left. Its gonna take a bit of work to pull it off and I think you'll need to to be creative with your tubing.

38mm + 54mm + 38mm + 54mm = 184mm

Thanks! Yeah, the PSU made the build for me. Simply cabling everything took almost a month, and it was a lot of diagrams and consulting the manual. Thankfully the design incorporated a 12-pin connector for the CPU which worked out perfectly in this instance.
