SR-2 CASE
(name TBA)

*** Render compliments of xxrabid93. See post #33 for more.

Are you interested in the SR-2, but dislike the case options? Do you want something that isn't the size of a cabinet, or as loud as a jetliner, but fits all your stuff? Do you want a unique case sold only here on the EVGA forums?

Well, it's currently under construction in my garage! You've seen my design skills with "Modern Industry," now add to that my friend's engineering experience and you've got an idea of what this case will be like

FEATURES:

Space-efficient
We aim to not waste huge amounts of space like Mountain Mods cases -- even for this monster board. Current dimensions spec'd at 30" tall, 23" long, and 10" wide.

Lightweight
All-aluminum frame and paneling, with strategic design choices to ensure strength. Too many cases have all those random metal flaps, extra screws, "left-over" bits. We cut out as much as physically possible. Pure case.

Room for everything you need.
Designed to fit up to 2x 480 and 2x 360 rads, and two HX1000-sized PSUs!

Intelligent airflow
Too many cases focus on piling on the fans without optimizing the flow. We aim to have few but well-thought fans to ensure good airflow without obnoxious noise and dust. The SR-2 will sit directly behind 2x 200mm fans, with 140mm intakes elsewhere. These are the same principles that made my "Modern Industry" and upcoming "Silent Steel" builds extremely quiet while maintaining great temperatures.

Modular design
Separate chambers for the board, rads, PSUs, HDDs -- and GPUs. Helps isolate heat and cables -- and keeps your eyes on the SR-2 itself.

Cable/tubing Management

Thought-out PSU locations and wire pass-throughs designed to minimize the clutter of all the SR-2's additional board power connectors, hard drive ports, multiple GPUs, etc. Routing holes for 3/4" OD water tubing.

Function over form
No ugly plastic bezels, random panel doors, ugly window meshes or grills, useless frills... Think Lian-Li style, but even more stripped-down.

FAQ:

  • We do not have an exact price in mind yet. It will be competitive with Mountain Mods, should be cheaper to ship as well.
  • My friend is working on some digital sketches which will follow soon.
  • We are currently considering options for paint. It may be anodized, or hand-painted, or left to each user to customize (with corresponding prices).Opinions or suggestions welcome!
  • The prototype might go for a discount if we don't think it was done as well as future copies will be. You are welcome to state your interest here, don't PM me to call dibs.
  • It's not designed specifically for other boards, but I do not see any reason smaller boards wouldn't fit.
  • Finished shots will be posted in an official FS thread or Mods Rigs.
  • This is REAL, I have already invested in tools and materials and begun cutting. ETA for initial finished frame: 2 weeks.

I don't have a SR2, but I may be interested depending on the design and price.  Will it be setup with a horizontal MB tray?

Interesting.. I have been working on my own design for a case; SR-2 availability would require a change in the motherboard tray, though. The design is to allow for this; with a simple swap out, for a yet to be designed HPTX tray. If you have the specifications for the E-ATX and XL-ATX Form factor available; I would really appreciate a link to them.

I posted a thread about this, in the X58 forum; figuring that would be the best place to start.

    Request thread: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=392224

Here is the thread for my Mod's and Rig's build; which I am--tentatively--designing the case for: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=379436

Appreciate any help. ..if you can link me to were I can find them; or PM me a link to a PDF, would be awesome.
I'll wait to see what you come up with; before I start looking into prefab. options. Should be interesting

    Cheers,

Should be in the "interest check" section, technically, until the case is phsyically available. Rulez is rulez.

Not to rain on anyones parade, but yes I am hoping he means fans as well and not 2x 480 GTXs. That would waste all the extra PCI-X slots on that board. I for one would find it awesome to eventually upgrade to 4x 480GTXs, unless they do a 495 GTX (Dual). But thats just imagination for now :-)

You could always just order the MM SR2 MB tray by itself and use that.   Also, you could PM Fitseries and ask him the dimensions of it, he has one.

Thanks utnorris! I was actually thinking about that, as an option; the SR-2 tray does look pretty decent. Wondering how I can incorporate it into the design though; also, looked at the Lian-li E-ATX replacement tray for the 60-series.

Would be nice, if Lian-li made a slightly larger, moddable case for watercooling; without the gimmic drive bay on top and cross-piece. Still considering that one, and the 800D; but, I would like to at least find out what prefab will cost.

..and see what Warthorn comes up with; I might prefer that, to the alternative. Have to agree about MM ..never liked the Wind-Turbine approach; or the overall size of them. Be nice to see a smaller, quieter alternative; though, it may be a significant waiting period.

Any thought to water cooling support?

Yep, whole thing is designed to fit 2 4x120mm rads and 2 3x120mm rads In fact, the case is really best suited to water, it would waste a lot of space for just air.

    utnorris
I don't have a SR2, but I may be interested depending on the design and price.  Will it be setup with a horizontal MB tray?

Vertical. It will take up minimal desk or floor space, approximately 24"L x 10"W

We have spent a great deal of time trying to find the best route for airflow and to support the weight of the board (specifically stack of GPUs) and think we have found a unique solution.

Very cool idea Matt. Best of luck with everything.

    Thanks Martin!

Should have at least metal ones over all intakes. We're still determining that along with paint.

Thank you! I hope it turns out very professionally, so far everything we've done on the prototype has looked great if you ask me.

Sure? Just PM someone, I have no problem with it being moved. Wasn't sure where to put it. Don't need to discuss it in the thread tho.

Yeah, I meant you could fit two 4x120mm rad. There will be space for as many GTX 480s as you want, and should be enough cooling for them too

Currently we are using a MM backplate to create a guide piece for ours. I can send you dimensions later this week if you don't end up getting one from them. I'll also be selling the backplate after we're done since it's basically just going to be used to align ours and then be wrapped back up Their plate is nice but is filled with extra junk material, weird holes, costs way too much, etc.

i never expected modding to go as far as one building their own custom case (other than something like a DD Torture rack ofc)

best of luck man, it will look badass if its anything like your modern industry case.

Sorry I don't have pictures. A good deal of progress on the frame has been made, however the person I was working with repeatedly failed to get me some sketches and meet other basic deadlines/communication standards. A forum member who lives nearby has taken over instead and will be building the chassis and doing some sketchups, I'll let him announce himself if he'd like tho

cj, I'm going to reply in the "Silent Steel" thread regarding the mini-ITX. Thanks for asking!

I just saw the first-ever render of this SR2 case, and it's just what I'd imagined. I'll post a picture if my new partner has a finished one soon Or he can post it.

Also with the frame briefly free-standing, I was a bit afraid. Even though it's compact compared to a MM case, it still towers over a desk or table...

Hello guys. I'm the "other forum member" and am working on this project with warthorn. I am currently working a google sketchup of the case, and will post it once complete.

This case is a monster, but because it is only as wide as most mid and full towers, it shouldn't take up too much floor space compared to MM, like warthorn said. IMO, it is a very good design, especially for watercooling junkies.

Thanks GC! Coming from the acrylic godfather, that is a huge compliment.

To all: I am almost done with the google sketchup/render. I just have to figure out the cable management holes, but for the most part it is done. Also a little note though, some parts of the render will not be the same as the actual built case, but it should give a good idea of what we are doing.
