So here are the renders. NOTE: This is only for display purposes, and will most likely not look like the actual build, though it incorperates many of it's features. But, from what warthorn and me have been talking about, the actual build should look better than my renders.

That's a pretty interesting design; never seen anything quite like it. I like that you've chosen some very innovative design idea's; the HDD and SDD placement, and the front fans, for example. Those are certainly original, and kinda cool; though, I'm wondering if you couldn't flip it on its front suddenly. Guess that wouldn't work to well for the 5.25" bays

Should be really nice, when you get the prototype done; looking forward to seeing the final fabrication stages.

The only thing i would change would be i think it would look a lot better if you took the "Triangles" at the front and curved them inward.. what do you think? Other than that it looks awesome

I'd like that as well, and discussed something similar with xxrabid. Issue is we don't have industrial equipment and have to make everything by hand, hard to reproduce perfectly clean curves. The corner bits might get scrapped anyway due to some recent material revisions.

I consider HDD racks clogging intake airflow to be one of the biggest design flaws of most cases, especially the "sideways" racks that make cable management easier ("lazier"). Or maybe it's just a pet peeve. All I know is, the single un-obstructed massive intake in my "Modern Industry" build cooled my cards and chipset very well yet was very quiet; the person who purchased the case later said the same thing. Two 200mm fans right on top of the board and GPUs should do wonders for keeping that massive board chilled (They also partially overlap the HDD chamber to cool the drives as well.)

You know there is fairly easy way to reproduce most shapes. For my build first I made pattern out of MDF and then I used Pattern Flush Trim Router Bit to reproduce what ever shape I needed. For example holes for fans. And router bits leave nice clean cut. There are some limitations, mostly bit size, but I don't see one for this application.

And I agree that putting HHDs behind motherboard is good space saver. I re-modded my case few weeks ago and I got rid of HHDs cage and I installed them behind mobo. So my case looks even more clean.

Have a link to a particular tool? I'll definitely take a look if it's a tool that can be re-used often.

You could use regular router, nothing special. Plus this bit http://www.toolstoday.com/p-5994-aluminum-flush-trim-solid-carbide-router-bits.aspx if You are cutting aluminum, and this http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=5411 if You cutting in wood/acrylic.

And of course You will need to make template, look at attachment

I bet there are some machines that can do it, but probably cost a lot. Like this one http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?Offerings_ID=19441&TabSelect=Videos it is very basic model and costs $2600

Thanks for the info on this! A router is one of the "big" tools I'd like but will probably not be able to afford for some time. I did recently purchase a full-size drill press on a sale though

Re:[Coming Soon] SR-2 Case 2010/09/08 04:14:56 (permalink)
So, sad update.

xxrabid and I did work on it quite a bit together, and it's partially constructed. Almost all the materials are there. He also took over the building of the case when I had to head out of state and then move downstate. Unfortunately, unlike my original partner who had infinite amounts of time and was too lazy to accomplish anything, xxrabid is busy with school, a job, etc, and that means neither of us is now available to complete the project. I have not even finished my own personal mini-ITX system.

I would just like to say thank you to xxrabid for all his help, as he took over when the odds didn't look so good, and did his best to try to help me recover the massive investment I made on this case. The entire profit of it (and any copies) were originally meant to go to my first partner who didn't have a job, and I was feeling quite burned by the first partner's lack of enthusiasm for the project, and so I have enormous gratitude to xxrabid for offering to work on this with me. He is a really nice guy who I would do business with and call a friend!

My apologies if anyone was waiting on this case. At this point, I am weighing a few options. I will not be available (physically out of the country in a few months) to finish it until next summer. I may just suck down the loss, about $500 worth of materials and tools. Or, I may try to sell the partially finished build at a low cost to see if anyone wants to finish it, or just sell the materials as scrap for projects. Any thoughts from you guys?

Thanks guys, but see post #46 if you haven't.

I have actually been working on "Silent Steel" all weekend by necessity, due to a PSU blowout. My replacement PSU is still in pieces, trying to paint and re-assemble the frame and all the cabling... Everybody cross your fingers the PSU didn't kill any other components!

I think that, unfortunately, by the time I'd be able to work on it again (next summer) the SR-2 isn't going to be a hot commodity anymore, drying up the market for this case. I also have no need or funds for anything this massive (you could fit 20 of my ITX build in there ) so there's really no point. I will probably just pile all the scrap metal in the garage and maybe someday I can try to re-use it on a build.
