So, I've had 2x Classified 760s total and still have a 758 (sitting in a box).

Anyway, I've noticed that between these boards, 2x 920s and 2x sets of Dominators and XMS3s, they always exhibit some sort of cold boot problem.

The most common being 4GB RAM on cold boot instead of 6GB.

So, what the heck is wrong with X58 boards or 920s and IMC?

Cold boot = over 16 hours of power off intervals. Basically, machine off at 12 midnight, on again next day around 6pm or later.

I have to boot up, shut down, and the boot up again for all of the RAM to show up. This occurs on stock CPU settings with 1600 RAM, I've been running stock for a while now. No issues with stability.

I've noticed this happen to me when A: My VTT was a bit too low and B: My memory timings were a bit too tight.   I suppose there could be alot of other things at play as well like memory voltage, bad memory, crappy BIOS etc..   I use a bootable USB drive with Memtest to give my ram a workout before I even bother going into the OS when configuring my systems.

I'd try tweaking A and B temporarily and see if it makes any difference to the consistency.

The IMC's tend to be weak, which is why they are rated at 1066 insted of 1600, sometimes a boost in Vtt can resolve this, sometimes it cant, it becomes more of an issue with 12G vers 6G, The EE chips were supssed to be tested to include the higher quality IMC's and were supsoed to go to 1333, but Intel backed out of that spec, aparently it was harder to provide than they anticipated. standards can often be met with adjustments to voltages, so us tweekers can run them above spec, but this could not reach a standard to make them plug and play for the masses.  Also if you are using Bios 44, or 49, make sure Turbo performance is disabled.

This EXACT thing happens to my 760 also!!!   I have to start up my system, and after the post screen show up for a few seconds, I force a shut down, then power up again and all 6GB show up.  If I just cold boot it, and leave it, I only get "3.99GB Usable" Even if I restart 1 time, or several times, it will still only show 3.99 usable.  EVGA suggested I made sure my ram was ok, and switch some sticks out, but I have seen way to many post's that have this same issue so I diden't mess with the ram.   It seems once everything has been powered up, its fine.  I can restart numerous times and the ram shows all 6GB.   I really wish Evga would fix this issue!!  I don't like forcing a shut down after starting up my rig every time!!

Oh, and by the way, I have read some post's suggesting making some changes in windows to fix the problem, that will not work for my problem.  When it only shows 3.99GB usable in windows, it also shows the same in the bios, so I know nothing I do in windows will fix this problem.  I have went into the bios on a cold boot up and the bios reports just under 4GB installed.   Just thought I would add that to the post....

If anyone finds a fix, Please share it will everyone, and I will do the same as well...

    Take care....

I was really pumped when I noticed that a new bios was released for the x-58's, but it looks like this does nothing for this ram issue....

Blue screened last night. Definitely a RAM issue.... I bumped my memory to 1.65V and VTT to +150. We'll see...

Yep, we have identical issues. I know exactly what the problem is - memory is corrupting. Based on my BSODs and stuff. Now it is either:

    1) Board is not supplying correct voltage to CPU and/or memory on cold boots

    2) CPU's memory controller does not function properly on cold boots

    3) Memory does not function at high speeds on cold boots

The only thing I have yet to try is to set the memory to 1066 and see if that affects anything.

So 1.65V and +150VTT = successful cold boot last night. Let's see how long this lasts.

So just FYI to everyone... I Gave up.

Apparently, after around 24 hours the system WILL boot into a state of 4GB detected. This must be an X58 issue or a motherboard issue.

A hard shut down and reboot fixes it. I guess  I'll have to live with it.

What are you running for cpu cooling? Check to make sure is not installed to tight.

It's a Megahalem, it can only be tightened so far (the threads end) so it's impossible to overtighten.

Definitely not a tightening issue because it only happens during cold boots. AFAIK the tightening issue happens to people regardless of what they do (they can't get 6GB to show no matter what). 6GB shows after a shutdown and restart regardless of what I'm doing (stock, overclocked to 4.2, running 1066 or 1600 or whatever).

can you check memory timings - round trip latency for each chanel - when 6gb is detected? for example maybe its 65 / 67 /69.
key in these manually save and exit , will this help?

I had an issue like that showing 4Gb of 6Gb .. It has something to do with the memory slots not making the right contact with the ram or something ..

All i did was pull all dimms and switched them up from what slot they was in and making sure the ram drops in even side to side and push the hell out of them till they click in and i do mean the (hell out of them) and they have been perfect for weeks now running 6Gb 1600Mhz @8-8-8-24 1T /1.65v and this is the OCZ Gold ram ,, no reboot/crashs 100 stable.

Fortunately, I've never had a cold boot issue (knock on wood), except once briefly when I had my OC voltages a little too far outta' whack. But I did have a "warm boot" issue with an Asus Rampage II Extreme and had to RMA it for refund.

    Main (gaming) rig: i7-3930K; Asus Rampage IV Extreme; H100 W/p-p Excaliburs, AS5; MSI 7870 2GD5/OC; Crucial M4 SSD 256GB.
See my primary ModsRigs: Adam for the rest, and I have a second (wife's) rig Asus Rampage III Extreme & 960: Eve.
