Radical edit:

Can you change the colour of the 'E' on the X99 classified mobo? Or perhaps just pull the red strips off? Its the only thing that ruins the look of an otherwise good looking and well designed bit of kit (IMHO of course).

Or get FTW, pry off the Grey "E" and problem solved. Then you can build a 2nd rig with the FTW, which now has matching slots and "E".
I bet you're thinking, "now why didn't I think of that!"

Do what JayzTwoCents did, mask it off and use plastidip spray paint. Then when you have to RMA, you can just pull the plastidip off.

Yeah thats the thing I was worried about, what happens if you need to return. Also whether it would make the heat transfer any worse, but for that much surface area I wouldn't have thought it would make any difference at all. Good to know it just comes off.

Is it possible to just pull the red inlay off and have it black?

I like my solution better, then you get 2 rigs: Classified, all nice and shiny Black/Gray and an FTW with Red E on Red slots. Two for the price of two!

You will bend the metal pieces. Watch the JayzTwoCents video. Plastidip is your best bet. The chipset doesn't produce enough heat that the Red section would have any effect on the heat dissipation.

It is either this one: http://youtu.be/whKB8YvB14w

    Or this one: http://youtu.be/WtA4DMvPJf0

Sorry, I can't load them on mobile.

He addresses pulling the color out and that it will risk voiding your warranty, so do what you want as it is your $400usd. If nothing else, it will cost you the price of repairs or they won't work on your board if you need an RMA.

    A bargain :)

I am surprised that mobo makers don't offer colour choices though, or swappable trims like corsairs fans. I just RMA'd a Deluxe. I bought it for features first, but my word it was gorgeous. The build I made with it made me want to just look at it all the time.

I don't feel like I trust ASUS quality control at the moment, so am looking at other boards, but I would like it to fit my existing black and white scheme. That said I am not convinced X99 as a whole has found its feet yet - nearly all the board manufacturers seem to be having problems with DOA boards, boot failures and RAM slots not working. None of them seem to have fantastic warranty terms either. Dont fancy another traumatic RMA process like I just had with my deluxe :(

Yeah I think I saw it the other day, I didnt realise it was removable though, thats cool. EVGA's warranty is pretty tight on modifications, so I am guessing any evidence of changes would just be a quick return to sender. As my nearest repair centre is in Germany (I am UK) thats sort of putting me off buying it, let alone modding it.

How many GPUs will you use? It may not even be noticeable at all.

    I WILL KNOW
lol J/K, I have got two EVGA 980 SC ACX PMSL ROFL YMMV 2.0's to put on it, so you may be right. Do you happen to know what the slot spacing is for a 28 lane CPU in dual SLI? Hope its not daft and having one card vent right onto the back of the other.

    For a 28 Lane CPU its by default x8 / x8.  Only way to get x16 / x16 (=32) would be the 40 Lane CPU's.  Hence why I grabbed a 5930k just in case I do decide to go SLI for x16 / x16.

Thanks, but thats not what I meant. I mean the actual physical location of the slots. So for example, on the Deluxe if you had a 28 lane CPU you had to use slot 1 and slot 4 for dual SLI, but could use 1 and 3 if you had a 40 lane. It gave you a gap between the cards.

I remember reading a review for an X99 mobo that said it used slot 1 and 2, meaning in an ACX type setup, the hot air from card 1 vented right onto the back of card 2 with no gap between. I forget which board it was.

Oh I see so you're saying which slots get disabled depending on which CPU you have or which lanes give you the highest performance?
