I don't see a link? Anyway if the title is as you said, reminds me of the Star Trek: Next generation episode when they put a (basically) 3D printed spine in Lt. Warf.

^^That's a good question, I would hope permanently for the patient. It appears to be designed similar to the cages [same principal]that are used sometimes in between vetebra. Where the body and implement are expected to fuse together.

From what I undestand the bone is suppose to grow around the titanium structure, so if it does it should be for the life of said individual. Only possible problem I could see might be calcium buildup around structure to the point of having to go back in at some point for excess removal of calcium.

It's pretty impressive the success that doctors are having with 3D-printed replacement parts in the body. This is far from the first great story. More importantly this sort of technology allows for the parts to be designed to unique specs for a person, which is just too difficult to do for traditional parts, without costing a fortune.

I didn't think about that part Jedi, being able to design and make for that particular patient. I was thinking it was a particular design that doctors or specialist agreed upon. That to me makes it that much more impressive.

I was thinking, but I know nothing about human physiology, wouldn't the body reject such an implant? It still is a foreign object in the body at the end of the day, after all.

"A 12-year-old boy suffering from bone cancer has become the first recipient of 3D printed artificial vertebra replacement. The five hour surgery was performed at Peking University in China where the boy is still recovering." ^^ I'm going to hazard a guess and say....no he didn't died.
