Gryphon The comment above that half of [H] joined them must be a joke, please just look at [H]'s numbers during the competition; there is barely a drop. You are right and I am completely wrong and I apologize to the forum and to [H] and any other teams that took offense to my remark. I misunderstood what I was looking at. I'll stay out of it for a while.

I feel that our team "funk" (as Xavier described it) comes from a similar thing that appears to have plagued [H] in the past. I do feel that we are in a "funk" and have been for some time now (way before CC began). We cannot be a great team and cause others to feel that way too if "eat our own". I'm not trying to paint the picture that we have that problem all the time. But when it happens, it is damaging to team spirit and we sometimes lose people (that are willing to at least tell us). Those of you in customer service related jobs know that old adage that for every 1 person that calls you to complain, there are 9 others that just go away quietly. As a team, we must realize the impact of being unfriendly to each other and that it may be larger than we know. We must first get healthy as a team and maybe that means going back to the basics of what our team is here to do. I love a good contest as much as anyone here, but am uninterested in them if we can't get along as a team.

We need to hire shykal to be our cheerleaer captain - get some of our wives doing sis boom bah with calendar pics to boot nothing too kinky or showy...but seeing some shakin in the right places might give the team a boost seeing shykal and her cheerleader squad showin off some skimpy outfit might do the trick

I'd say drop everyone folding under the same name. Let them fold under there name of choose, they will be more out to stay folding. They will see there own points there own work units numbers growing. Catch the folding fever and stay folding. As for scoring system: Maybe it should be set to the amount of WU's folded rather than the PPD they bring as part of how the score it tallied. After all its more about the actually finished work unit that is more important than the PPD we get for them or should be. Move to cooler month. Edit: as for the PPD that shouldn't been apart of it this year since we had -bigadv WU's on lesser cores last year. Not everyone can afford to go to dual CPU setups to get those. So the production scores are going to be less this year. Who ever set it up as part of the way to get scores wasn't thinking very clear or so it seems. No way we could have brought in even close to the bonus points the team did last year. BTW this is my 1st year to play in this. I'd say we had way more growth than the score/PPD showed taking the above into view.

I've been through a few of these contest now, and this one I felt so much less enthusiasm for. It was almost as if we expected to lose before we even began. I don't know if anyone has kept track of how many people converted over to the Apes folding this year compared to last, but my guess is that it is less than before. There are several reasons for participating. First is the feeling of spirited competition and comaraderie we get interacting with other teams for a common goal. I didn't feel that this year ike I have in the past. Second is to act as leaders in the folding community, which we definitely are. Losing the number one team (at least for now) would have an adverse impact on the challenge. Third is to bring in new people to fold. I don't know if that has been very successful. Not this year, nor in past years. My suggestion would be to gauge the members closer to the time of the next CC to see if our folding pool was interested then. If they want to try and think it might be fun, then lets do it. But if not, maybe we should pass on it.

Pulling people from other teams isn't getting new people involved in folding, such as this OCF post. Shows the spirit is all about winning instead of the real cause. shame shame.... Getting new people into folding. Posted 16 May 2012 - 02:02 PM Hey guys. OCF is in the fight of its life to win the Chimp Challenge right now. We're neck and neck with OCN and could use any help to boost the team over the top. We're recruiting from far and wide. I haven't folded for years and probably won't continue after the challenge (electricity & the heat in our office is killer), but I've got a 3960X producing 45K PPD for the team. Here is the announcement article: http://www.overclock...-challenge-2012 Basically, configure your client with the following CASE SENSITIVE info: Folding name: T32monkeys Team Number: 32 Passkey: 3311d92fd7ee331bd66dfe6eea01708b ...and fold on as usual. The team would be grateful for any help! Post up if you join too so you can be recognized and thanked in the visiting racers thread. You can follow score updates in this thread.

TheWolf Just some thought here... Your post is dead on to my point. To heck with other teams few members that do that. I do not see that as a reflection of their team, but rather the few on their team that has their focus misplaced or misguided... It is all for them, not for the Folding in those situations. A call for new folders is one thing, asking for help from other active folders to change to their team is another. There is a minimal gain to asking current, vs. gains new folders can bring... That said... This is about us, not any of them. We need to take actions for what we are good at, and need to improve on. CC is an event I can live without. Anyone ever think about creating an event that we design, and invite teams to participate in? And have it focus on being a "Membership drive" vs a "Contest"? You know... Like many not for profit needs do... Many cities, communities participate for a single goal, yet each of them can set their own goal to achieve... Quick example... Say we have two "Global" goals... - 2,000,000,000 total production
- 12% increase in folders
We invite teams and they set internal goals to reach that number... Example... EVGA... 500,000,000 168 new folders... Team X 5,000,000 16 Folders All trying to reach the main goal and internal goals. This way they have their own cheer leading and effort. But now the focus is on the Global Goal, not beating out another team. Simple rules, no magical formulas. Pure effort.

I'd say we had way more growth than the score/PPD showed taking the above into view. the team agreed with that this year - it's about the majority rules - the other teams voted even for and against and we would have lost teams if we went the change as for losing bigadv on smaller rigs - it would hit teams pretty evenly - except[H] which has gone out of it ways to develop 16+ rigs the fact we had our best month in march when bigadv was gone from smaller system. the only main diff was HPCS and that would apply even with this chimp as well count WU's? this is a bad idea ...it's pretty easy to drop bad WU's to inflate numbers then the team captain would have to filter the flat files(stats) for the team looking for large amounts of wu drops tough to prove they are dropping bogus WU's be nice if people were honest - but with other teams talking hacks for bigadv.. i don't see trust extending that far as for growth from last year as a team output was 120M in ten days(last year) - we won't do 90M(this year) that's a 25-30% drop OCN was 107M in 10 (last year) they are on track to do 120M+ a 10-20% increase so how do you see .. "I'd say we had way more growth than the score/PPD showed " from your perspective (not knocking ya...I just don't see what you see) new members that don't fold don't count...we could all sign up 10 new members(fake names and do 1 WU) under different folding names each and grow the team by 10x but it be fake for the team growth to count we have to get the members geared up and in motion for the team that means real members that are motivated to push out some serious numbers in a good cause (even heat or weather or rigs on fire be damned)

^^ Yeah I figure that might be the case... But why not approach different teams? There are not just ten of them after all. If we can have success in Crunching, I see no reason why we cannot duplicate that spirit and success in Folding! My input above was not to change CC, but rather have an option to think about for any event regardless if we participate in CC or not. Honestly, I have more fun with the Time Zone and March Madness. That is what made me think, why not make one more event (Removing summer months all together) and make one of them an invitation type for teams that might be also looking for a way to participate in a way different than the CC offers...

When you mentioned this idea I immediately thought of Seti Germany hosting the BOINC Pentathlon and inviting other teams to join in. I like the idea of hosting an event. We have the experience with organizing and getting stats going for internal competitions, we should be able to rehash most of this know-how for something like this. Also, it'd be cool to use the multiple events idea like the pentathlon and teams have to use teamwork and strategy but use F@H-based events, obviously.

I post this as a outsider.I fold normally for Team PNY but am a folder for OCN during the CC.I am a prior folder for OCN and devote my rigs to them for the CC every year.For a while now I have not put out many points for my team because of a few reasons.Many because of a faulty power meter and a 1 income family now.Now that my power bill is correct now I will be bringing points back to my team. I have some suggestions and some insites on the CC for this year.Please do not take them as harsh or flaming comments. 1 Has Team EVGA failed this year?Yes.The number of members to convert has been low. Answer to this is better communication.The handful of guys that did the pm's did a great job.EVGA needs to step in. 2 Will EVGA come back?I sure hope they do.I was on the OCN team when we had a points only race and We won.Now that EVGA is a much larger team and makes great points.They need a bit of a handycap. 3 Should smaller teams compete?Yes to a degree.Smaller teams need the support the CC gives to liven up their team.Every new folder for no matter what team is a new folder. 4 Points system?Yes one needs to be.The need is for a larger team like EVGA to have a run away is like a great white in a small pond.You are a large team and need to compete on a level playing ground.A points system needs worked out where "ALL" teams competing needs to be in a few points of each other at the end. 5 Folding under one name.I have a good point in this.There are team members who have spent countless dollars and time making rigs for their folding.Then the CC comes and threaten their standings in the team.Why make them feel like their time and money is for nothing?Some do think team rank is something special. 6 The not changing names for the CC.Once the CC starts the passkey will need WU's completed to get bonus's.So that will hinder folders from changing names to add to the growth factor.That is unless the fold on gpu's only. EVGA is a large team and I have no problem with it.If EVGA decides to give out money or hardware to folders it is OK by me.This team is a company based team.They have the backing where other teams do not.So why complain that EVGA give anything to it's folder because it has the backing?Anybody that says EVGA pays their folder is just talking out their butt. With my rant/comments I hope EVGA does compete in the 2013 CC. I will edit once the beer has let off a bit.

count WU's? this is a bad idea ...it's pretty easy to drop bad WU's to inflate numbers then the team captain would have to filter the flat files(stats) for the team looking for large amounts of wu drops tough to prove they are dropping bogus WU's
be nice if people were honest - but with other teams talking hacks for bigadv.. i don't see trust extending that far
Make them be honest use the WU count and the PPD set a amount of allowed EUE WU's per 24 hours, everything above that take away PPD, just as a example: -150K for every EUE over the limit of 25 per day. Wouldn't take them long to see that loosing WU's is very bad for there team. Set some harsh rules and stand behind them. Exceptions are already set for smaller teams competing. So be it in this case "smaller team" with smaller numbers for a penalty. I'm not a wiz with numbers, this may or may not work. Just something else to think about that might fair the playing field. This will probably be Edit:"my" last year to play, so what I have to say doesn't really matter. I been folding for over 10 years "early 2001" its not fun watching your stats flat line after all the time and effort you have put into a account old or new. Flat line will be my reason for not joining a team next year. The first part of this post is another reason Not to fold under 1 name. If under 1 name it be to easy for another team to drop bad WU's under your single name "hidden" from all to see, hiding who is doing it. If its set to single user name it be easier to pick out where the problem is. Especially on new accounts made just for the CC contest. If its a real new join account they should be posting somewhere that they are in. In the case its a real hardware or software fail, we could help the new comer fix there problem or ask them not to fold with faulty or unstable hardware. The lost of PPD with lost of WU's is a way to greater the actual project at hand. Now we are fighting to be the best "Stablest" at folding and returning the most finished work units "The Most Stable Group of Folders" TMSGF award Its all about returing the most completed work units. A crown that could be proudly worn by any team in the CC.

Congrats to OCN & T32.. Even with No Formula or No Handicap we where beat'em with straight PPD. We were out hassled, outwitted and outplayed. I've been on the team for now 6 months and have participated in both the March Madness and the Chimp Challenge 2012. For me it was a night and day difference. I had a significantly better time during the March Madness (even with the all issues). I think the contest site made all the difference in the world, certainly I become closer with my Protein Prophets teammates and pushed me to buy more folding hardware, than the CC. The ability to individual teammate stats really help, allowed me to poke the slackers and praise my teammates extra efforts. I wasn't around for the CC Hay day, and fail to see the appeal.

After last year I was on the line about participating this year and after reading the rules I decided not to. I did participate in some team competitions and that is what I am going to stick with now. From what I can see the CC is no longer bringing in a lot members and just causing issues for the team. I say we should just do our own competitions and invite other teams to participate if they want. We could even mix the teams so for a certain comp there are people from different teams working together for a short period. That would improve the folding community as a whole.

Wow, lots being said and discussed in this thread, and a lot has to do with a past I know nothing about. My input will be based on the sole fact that I am a brand new folder, and I can't even (nor should I) comment on the "political" and "historical" stuff I see or the point algorithm or any of that. Little background - when I was deciding to upgrade my computer, I was doing so with explicit intentions to fold in mind. I also wanted it to be a newer Xeon system and was not all that impressed with latest generation Xeons and the SR-X, but the SR-2...man I loved everything about it. Long story short, got the SR-2, planned to fold with it, spent some good money to have nicer than nice average Xeon processors even if they aren't overclocked to the heavens. I upgraded from LGA1366 to LGA1366...and dont regret it at all. So, fast forward to it being up and running, very little time to work on it (due to unforeseen circumstances and ongoing issues related to an accident earlier this year)... It was a matter of absolute sheer damn luck I saw something on the forums about folding, think it might have even been a random signature of someones stating something about Chimp Challenge 2012. Due to that, it "reminded me" and clicked..."oh yeah, FOLDING!" From there, the rabbit hole opened up wide; I didnt even have a folding client on my machine. I didnt know I would have "seed" my new account, luckily that was touched on enough in the sign-up info and other posts that I knew right away that I could not use my own account right off the bat so the pre-seeded passkeys were the only reason I was even helpful in the least bit but within a few hours I was already folding and contributing to EVGApes for CC12 Fast forward again to now, and I feel like I know quite a bit more about my machine due to folding, and loved generating my ~145k PPD a day from two machines on behalf of EVGA, for the competition - but what I enjoyed more was the fact I was doing for the real purpose; the medical community and subsequently and very directly for an old family friend who died a month or so ago to cancer after battling it three or four different times in different parts of her body. F cancer! In the end, I learned a lot and had fun and know it's all for a great cause. However, it never would have been useful at all in terms of the competition had it not been for random luck of picking the scab and finding the rabbit hole - lack of what I saw online regarding bringing in new people seemed to be almost non-existant to me, or I was extremely blind and not in the right place. I don't know who's fault that is, whether it be one person, a group of people, or a company, or what...nor does it matter, but for being what I feel to be a "classic" candidate for signing up and recruiting to fold for a new contest such as this, I could have very easily slipped through the cracks as I'm sure many others actually did. Hope my input as a brand new folder is useful to someone or a group of people who can apply it to bettering the process. R.I.P. Laurie, and F cancer!

DevilSun, Your post is exactly why we made this thread. We are a very giving group of individuals from all over the World. Our focus should be and is on Folding/Crunching and spreading knowledge of our Computer knowledge and DC (Distributed Computing). We are having this discussion in part as a way to refocus the needs of our fellow man and our team. Sometimes when we get knee deep in something we can lose focus. Now we are regaining our focus. Welcome, thank you for your post and contributions to the bigger picture.

Now look, it draws you in. That's what I want to see for the CC ultimately. I want people in spite of the headaches to be drawn to the competition.

If left as single team name to join under, Only have Two (2) allowed team names example: The Cause and For the Better Good with only two team numbers & paskeys. Then you just pick the name you like best or buddy up with others under the same name. Then there is no all the extra BS with conversion % and growth for scoring. Just straight numbers of the most PPD made in the allocated time limit wins. After all this is suppose to be about bring awareness about folding to bring new people into folding. Or was my understanding of the CC. Everything else is just icing on the cake and for brigging rights. As it stands we have no clue how many new people joined in the fight, because all names are hidden under one name this brings it back to use of your chosen name and getting recognition for joining the efford. It seems to me the real objective has been lost since this was started. Edit: As I see it this has become nothing more than another Forum War.

That would still cause problems though. Plus, It eliminates the spirit of competition between the teams. Also who would get the jaded monkey? You might have a team where 90% of their users fold for the one team, but the others fold for the other team. No it need to be left at one CC team per folding team.

First thing I want say is "THANK YOU" to everybody that helped make this years CC even happen.
BUT;
I think that in the present format or anything like it, the Chimp Challenge is always going to fail.
Having a promotional & ramp up drive using only 11.7 % of the folding community is holding back what really could be achieved if this was opened up to all teams. ( 58,527 active folders, 5011 folders in competing teams.=11.7% approximately. stats taken from Kako stats. Although these are different to EOC stats I could not find overall active users on EOC stats site so I used Kako )
I would like to see something more along the lines of a 2 horse ( or chimp ) race where;
RACE FORMAT;
Team 1; is the top 50 teams total daily output combined;
Team 2; all the other teams including default total daily output combined.
(Someone would actually have to run the numbers to work out what split would be the most even.)
I actually ran this format in a spread sheet during the Chimp Challenge using EVGA & (H)'s daily scores combined against the other competing teams daily scores combined & it was a very good race until a few members from (H) started helping OCF & then the scores started to distort off being a close race. ( (H) effectively shot themselves in the foot. )
End result; Evga/(H) - 481,916,806 Other teams - 498,482,233
( Stats taken from EOC 15 -25 May total daily output )
Using this type of format (points manipulation only) it has little to no effect on any personal or team goals. It also should address most of the team jumping issues.
It gives everybody the opportunity to choose whether they want to pay attention to the race & get involved, or they can just ignore the fact that it is even running & carry on with whatever they are doing.
PRIZE;
Jaded Monkey could still be displayed by members of winning team if they wish ( although there would be a lot more of them ) & maybe a yellow banana with year badge for having competed. ( Only applies if the competition name is still "Chimp Challenge" see below )
SMACK TALK;
I would like to see the smack talk hosted by Google so there is no issue with traffic & maybe they could set up a language filter so our non English speaking folders can fling some of their own. ( Watching the language translation for 10 days could be a major amusement in itself ) Letting Google run some ads on the page so they can make a little money might help get them on board.
GETTING THE WORD OUT; ( This is where the major focus needs to be.)
There needs to be sticky's in the folding@home forum & all other major folding forums so that even small teams can get the word it is; ON, WHEN & HOW LONG. (Even if it is from browsing some other teams forum )
This should also give P.G a heads up so they can make sure servers are up to full speed. (No down time scheduled & full of work units)
ENDING NOTE;
I have had this going through my head from around the time I started doing the spread sheet for myself (day 4 of CC) & I am sure there was other things I wanted to add, but after writing this down & editing it 50 times I cannot think of anything else to add. I am sure other people will come up with something I have forgotten or did not think about. Anyway just some food for thought.
I may be totally wrong in the way I think & everybody else wants to keep the CC as close to the format it is in @ the moment.
This could even be a new format for a new competition run @ the end of October/start of November ( more preferable to the northern hemisphere folders ) & given a totally new name,( Stanford Server Burn Challenge ) or whatever.
I was just looking for something that was bigger more robust & FUN.
Too many times I have watched teams imploding from the internal bickering over these competition discussions because the race format becomes too complicated & focus is lost on the real goal of recruitment.
Just in case anyone is wondering, I fold as TweakIT for OCAU Team 24.
I thought this would be a better place to post this as our forum is a little on the quiet side most of the time.
TweakIT..
Now I'll go back to hiding in my corner. I'm sure there's something around here needs overclocking.

(we doing 9M this year).
9 million seems low; Really I think I did almost 870K alone But I defiantly like the idea of keeping our own names, it would make tracking points so much easier.

Tweakit your suggestions have merit but, how many of those people on those other teams would even want to participate? How would we reach the ones who might not have a listed forum?. Basically it would be like putting the entire human race in contest against itself. Yea theoretically it works but there are so many people. I think the idea is flawed in the fact that it's overreaching what we could physically manage. There are only a handful of people from the 8 teams that work on the CC as it is, a couple dozen at best. How do you expect that few to handle getting the word out to literally tens of thousands of people on hundreds of teams and then organizing the entire mess? As for stickied threads in all major forums, we did. Theres one in every major folding forum plus the general forum. Having Google host the chat is cool. Can you elaborate on the idea?
