win smp is the "high performance" windows cpu client, which can use all cores compared to the one core of the regular cpu client (the one you can download here at EVGA). The bigadv requires at least 8 cores (or an i7 with HT enabled ) and has very strict deadlines. Those two clients give you bonus points the faster you return a wu.

I'm hoping to be apart of this year's CC. Only thing is I'm graduating from college and I have no idea if I'm gonna be packing up everything or not. I'll try my best to help as much as I can. I regret not really being around much since winter time. I'm running thin on money and my roommates keep complaining that my computer uses too much energy lol But so far you can count me in!

Thank you for your help Barbarossa. I've been looking at the SMP client for a few days now, but I've been a little bit weary of attempting to set it up since I didn't know exactly what it was or what it did. I believe I'm going to get that client and use it in place of the current basic CPU client, ESPECIALLY since the one I'm using only puts out about 2 - 3 WU's per day. One more question though: do you think it would really benefit any compared to the basic CPU client? I'm using a Core 2 Duo E7200 OC'ed from 2.53GHz to 3.48GHz (you can use the CPU-Z link to check the rest of the info if needed). Thanks again in advance. I'm really looking forward to helping out with this year's contest! EDIT: Also, if I uninstall my current CPU client, is there a way that I can save the current checkpoint that I'm on? Or will that be lost during the uninstallation? OR could I just copy and paste the folder(s)/file(s) from the old to the new? (Again, not really a big deal, but it would be nice)

You can't move a WU from a classic client to the SMP client - they work on different projects. The best thing to do is finish the current WU (you could stop it temporarily and then restart it with the -oneunit switch) and then switch to the new client.

Thanks Punchy. I was actually just about to edit my post again when I saw that you had already responded. I realize now that I need to have a password on my user account, and I'm not willing to set that up to use this SMP client. At least not now, anyway. Whenever there is an official contest start date, then I will more than likely set up the password so that I can use the SMP client for the contest, then just get rid of the user account password and go about my business. (If I'm wrong about having to have a password, then by all means let me know and I'll get started using it right away.) I truly appreciate everybody's help. Thanks.

When I run Install.bat, it goes to account <domain\user> [Tempest\-$@I_V@710N-]: ("Tempest" = Computer name & "-$@I_V@710N-" = My user name) I type in my user name (-$@I_V@710N-), then hit Enter. Then it say password: So I enter my user account password. (as I'm typing it in, nothing comes up on the screen - it just stays blank) Then I get confirm password: So I enter my user account password account. Then I get Password encrypted into the Registry. Credentials for -$@I_V@710N- rejected connecting to Tempest Aborting: Unable to connect to Tempest Press any key to continue... What am I doing wrong? I tried running as Admin (even my account is the only one), and the command prompt window just pops up for a brief second then goes away, leaving me no chance to do anything. I've tried to run Install.bat probably 30 times now. **** am I doing wrong?!?!

Either a typo 8in the line where it askes for your Windows username you cna just hit enter), or in Vista and Win 7 UAC has to be disabled and it doesn´t like it in the Programms file C:\Fah is Ok though I usually put it in C:\Users\Username\FAH

I went through, set it up, followed the thread about auto login to Windows, got that set up good, but now I'm having trouble work packets. What's wrong now? EDIT: I did some Googling, and found that is a very common problem. I'll just let it sit every time I have my PC on and let it go til I get work I guess. It seems that it's not a problem on my part. Plus I remember reading (now) on the Stanford site that there is no guarantee of work on SMP clients. Oh well.

Barbarossa Did you put in the -advmethods (best you get yourself a passkey as well) Othwerwise stand in line No I didn't put in -advmethods, I just got a passkey (I opened the "client.txt" file, and where it says "passkey=ask" I put "passkey=(my passkey)". Do you think -advmethods would be beneficial to me since I actually use my machine a lot, even though I fold with the CPU and GPU in the background (unless I'm gaming or encoding video) ? And if so, where/how do I change it to use -advmethods? Thank you for your help. I'm very sorry if I'm becoming a bother with all the questions. I usually don't have a hard time figuring stuff out on my own, but this has just got me gridlocked somehow.

It doesn´t hurt trying at least one wu, you can always take it back out (you can even fold the regular single core wu with it) You can enter the -advmethods to the shortcut on your desktop (if you created one). Just add it after the -smp. On a dual core @ 3Ghz one wu takes roughly 24h

I just put in the -advmethods, and as soon as I loaded it up it went str8 to server x.x.x.x and started pulling in work. Thanks again for ALL of your help. I truly appreciate it. The captains are fixing the rules for this year´s challenge (like what´s the target) Last year the target was 20 million and it took us a week. Most other teams needed 2 weeks.

Quick update Captains are discussing the rules and other factors but it is looking like everything will stay the same as last years challenge at the moment , amount , start time , ect... but I will keep you all updated. I also suggested in the future maybe a handicap for small teams I think this would bring this even into fruition across the world taking on teams like our with a chance to beat us based on a handicap system. -l337h4l... out

Question to all CC participants. Based on the current point goal of 20 million, would the CC last long enough for -bigadv to be viable with an average completion time of 2 1/2 days or would A3 WU's be the way to go? I can't quite wrap my head around how the stats would fall out at the moment.(early onset dementia ya know)

Since I don't run the -bigadv, I really don't know how many points they are currently netting. My A3s on my stock i7 940 get me a bit more than 10,000 PPD.

depending on luck with the bigadv, you might get 2 or 3 done in the period. I think you should stay with bigadvs if you do them now. I generally net 50K with a bigadv, so I think my contribution will be higher if I stay with them. I certainly am willing to switch though if calculations show I would be better off running A3s for the team.

I average 55,000 points net when I complete a -bigadv. That is what I am trying to determine, if switching to A3 WU's would be more beneficial in the short time period.

One thing to try is to have your bigadv clients completing their first WU within hours after the CC starts. You could do it with a -oneunit flag and then switch to A3's afterwards if it looks like the contest will end before the next bigadv would complete.
