I have 2 burnt orange wires. The rig runs "fine" but need to know what's taking so much juice. The PSU is a corsair HX1000 watt

What all are you running on that rig? Video cards, mobo, etc?

Ooops...yeah I should've listed my specs. I forgot I don't have a sig anymore. I will be putting in a RMA for it. It's under a year old so I don't think I'll have a problem. Thanks guys.

BTW....these wires were discovered BEFORE I installed the 2 560ti's. So I'm thinking it was the 3x 285's in Tri-SLi

Re:Burnt Orange wires 2011/03/06 21:38:16 (permalink) ☄ Helpful
Those orange wires are the +3.3V wires.

They aren't powering your video cards.  +3.3V is used for RAM, certain components on the motherboard that is usually stepped down, and harddrives.....although most modern SATA drives do not actually use +3.3V.  Nothing on a modern rig will consume anywhere near enough +3.3V power to discolor the wires due to heat....if everything is operating as it should.

If it were +12V and you had 2 or more high powered cards then I could understand.....but you don't, so it doesn't.

I'm worried about a possible short on the PSU causing this, although if you haven't had any sort of stability or failures I'm not 100% on this.

I would definitely get a multimeter and see what the heck is going on, or better yet just replace the PSU to be safe.  If there was a board short causing an out of control power draw I'm almost 100% certain you would have had stability issues by now, or an outright failure.

Very, very nice informative post. This has to be one of the best I've seen. Thank you. BR worthy IMHO

Okay so I can scratch out my guess of the video cards being the culprit. Go check out THIS thread I posted. Anyways...I requested a RMA last night but I still would like to pin-point where this is deriving from. You understand I'm sure

<EDIT>
I just thought of something. A long while back I had 4x 150Gb VelociRaptors in RAID 1+0 and 2 others connected for storage. Yea, I know, I know, I know.....but now I have a couple tera's on ONE drive now. But anyways...It could have happen then huh? I've always had that static issue. Trust me, It get's real dry here in Minnesota during Winter. ESPECIALLY if you're living in an APT

Mmmmaybe...but not in my case. I didn't see any discoloration with the cables. BTW...to anybody that is wondering or wants to know; Corsair provides cross shipping.

Re:Burnt Orange wires 2011/03/17 12:17:53 (permalink)
It could be a bad connection to the board right under the 24 pin plug connector too the board or a componet on that circut thats poorly connected, what happens is that they continuosly arc but at the same time still being in contact just enough to make things work and it cause resistance that really heats up the spots and wires and then when they cool at power off the solder kinda reconnects ., but it could start making things unstable that would be a clue or total failure and not power up anymore or permanant damage and then not work. in any case you should begin finding a solution and only use the machine to do that so you don't wreck it for good.
