Hey guys,

I bought a 780 Ti 30 days ago from NewEgg, is it worth it to Step Up to the 980? I'm getting conflicting reviews.

Thanks!

yes it is, if you ask me - more performans for less power and money.

If you are near the 1.2 GHz area on that 780ti the gap is pretty small. Only benefit is multi-DP, lower power usage, nearly same performance, hdmi 2.0, and some other things. Otherwise its a side grade for the most part, the "big" Maxwell cards won't be out for a few months, which is supposed to be the real improvement over the 780ti.

I will either find a way, or make one.

Keep your 780ti for now. It's a solid performer.

Depends on what variant of 780 ti you have as well. Since it is a step up, as long as you are not paying more for the 980, I'd say do it since you will get a little more power along with the other benefits that come with Maxwell (MFAA...). If this were not a step up case, then I would have said don't do it as it would not have been worth the trouble.

    Thanks guys.
My biggest concern is the 3 versus 4 GB of memory. Watch Dogs isn't handling the 780 Ti and other higher end graphics cards as well even though the recommended requirement is 3GB of memory.

Watch dogs is a mess of a game for everyone. It's a port that is still trying to use GPU and system ram in the PC as it does with the unified ram in the PS4 and XBONE which will not work.

If you're thinking of doing SLI in the near future with the 780Ti then you might be SoL because they're being discontinued. Otherwise the performance difference is only 10-15%.

I seriously don't understand all the hype around Watch Dogs. I had to scroll several pages on Steam reviews to find one "recommended" review. On top of that, there are numerous issues with hardware optimization, and the answer is not "MOAR VRAM!!!"

I beat Grand Theft Auto III for PS2 well over a decade ago, and that was pretty much all I ever wanted of this type of game. I realize this is personal preference, but still, even fans of this game type are not happy with Watch Dogs, it seems.

But back to the OP, i also agree that you should probably just keep the 780 Ti, even if the step-up is allowed.

My question is much the same.

I have a 780 TI SC with the ACX cooler. Current stable overclock is +66 Core +400 Memory. As you can see somewhat disappointing core clock fantastic memory clock. Either way the core is hovering around 1200 under load. Temp never goes over 81c.

Basically is the step up worth it for me?

It depends what is more important to you performance wise the 980 can get better and more mature driver wise andd it will pull ahead from the 780 Ti, TDP wise this is a major improvement money wise, maybe depends what you're gonna get for that 780 Ti.

Performance per Watt and price performance the GTX 980 Wins hands down , but overall performance you're about the same now so, dunno what is more important to you the overall performance or the TDP, which is lots lower 165 Watts over 250 Watts, which is quite a tad less

The 980 can net you another 20% plus performane depending on the overclock and still remain cooler than a TI.
It requires less power from the wall and once driver revisions get tweaked it might net a little more. If your gaming at better than 1080p I say yes. Otherwise it may just be a side grade for you. Regarding 980ti I doubt we will see anything in a few months. If history repeats itself it will be a year. I don't think we will see a Ti soon, I think they will wait for the 20 nm node to do a ti just my opinion but I could be wrong.

I would keep the 780ti. I'm going to keep mine as well. The 980 is just not cutting it for me, the performance gain is too small. I'm using a custom loop though so the swap would take a lot extra work. I hope AMD has prepared something great to counter the 980, forcing Nvidia to release big Maxwell sooner lol. I will upgrade when I see a card at least 40-50% faster than my 780ti.

I also have a 780Ti SuperOverclock ACX and I have till 24.9.2014 for the StepUp. I have bought 3 years xtra for 25 euro's, because I readed something that StepUp is only for people who bought extanded warranty. I'm in a RMA process now because the fans are only running at 28% but the software said 100%. I have not sended the card back yet for RMA to their headcourters in germany. They also saying that whan they have no cards from your type available, you get a similar or better for return. You can't buy a 780Ti SC from their website, so I will wait a little more so their 780Ti stock is hopefully empty so they need to send a 980 SC back :P. The 980 SC is 130 dollar less than the 780Ti, but the 980 is +7% faster (780Ti stock vs 980 stock). Only at computing scores, the 780Ti is way faster, bud in games, the 980 is the way to go. I also like the lower TDP. The 980 and 970 also have the new ACX 2.0 coolers with better bearings and a new silent motor. The design is also really nice.
I have sended a Email to EVGA yesterday and I'm waiting for monday to get a Email back. Because im in a RMA cycle, I can't see if I can use the StepUp programm with my 780Ti. When I can, I will get a 980 SC definitely.

You might be better off waiting for the 985/980 ti, whatever they plan to call it. I'm holding off on sli'ing my 780 ti because I'm interested in the built in supersampling function.

I would stay with the gtx 780 ti unless you plan 4k. I luckily sold my previous 780 ti a few months back for close to retail. Now they've dropped $200, just like the gtx 780 did just when the ti came out.

You should step up to the 980. Performance increase. Watch Dogs also plays better with higher Ram.

If I had just purchased a 780 Ti, I wouldn't even be looking at the 9xx cards unless I could return the 780.  I am stepping up from two 560 Ti, so my performance is going up, power consumption down, noise down.  If I were you, I would wait until 2016 when the 20nm dies should be in production, VRAM will likely go up again, UHD pricing comes down (and 5k is a thing), and DX12 API starts getting used for next-gen games.  The only real benefit you're going to see over what you have (from what I've seen via reviews and testing) is lower power consumption, lower noise, and better frame rate in 2k/4k.

    i7-960 LGA1366  / MSI X58A-GD45 / 6GB RAM / SLI evga 560 Ti Crysis 2 Maximum Graphics Edition / 750W PSU / Viewsonic 27" VX2739WM @ 1920x1080 / 3TB across 2 spinning WDCblack drives / some 140mm fans, a couple 200mm / all stuffed in a CM HAF 912 chassis.  And chicken.

Does evga always only offer the base model cards from every line for step up?

Normally it is the reference/ACX base versions only but there have been a few different items that make it on there.  Right now you can see the 970 FTW on the list, generally FTW's don't get put on there.  Back when the 6gb 780's were released there was an option to upgrade to a SC version before you finalized.
