Just a visual (OK eye-chart) for those that plan to participate in both of these "challenges" this month. This helped me sort of realize that there is some overlap, but not too bad between the two contests. There are only (2) of the Pentathlon Disciplines announced thus far. So, I had to list the other Disciplines as ??? and guessed at their start times based upon where the first (2) are starting. I think we can do both contests! Edit: Updated timeline to include the 3rd Discipline "Showbag" that was just announced. Edit: Added the final two Disciplines "Yoyo" & "QMC" and updated the timeline. Edit: When it says 00:00 UTC for start time, the 08:00 pm Eastern is actually ahead (earlier) of UTC time. So if a new Discipline starts May 10th at 00:00 UTC, that is 08:00 pm Eastern on May 9th.

I don't know how these contests work. How do I participate in these contests?
Currently what I do is have all the possible options for crunching selected and I just run the program. How do I participate in the Rosette or chimp challenge?

Well, for the Chimp Challenge (CC), you have to change your folding name to EVGApes, team number stays 111065. In case you want to use your own passkey for the smp client, you have to do the initial 10 wus first. The BOINC challenges work differently. Once a team signs up for a challenge, everybody on the team participates. So lets say Rosetta does a challenge, and we diecide to participate: Everybody on our team crunching rosetta tasks participates. Then theres projects like WCG or Primegrid, where are several "sub projects": There it depends on how the challenge is set up: Does it include all sub projects, or only (a) specific one(s). There then you have to select the ones i question. Now in case you don´t hace an account for these projects, you can simply join by creating an account with the project and joing our team there. The pentatlon works just like that, just that it is compiled by using different projects

so if our team decides to participate in the Rosetta challenge and I'm on the team I'm automatically contributing and I don't have to do anything or change any sort of settings or selections?

I'm not sure based on what you mentioned before whether that's true or not. You mentioned you had "all possible choices for crunching checked". Reading between the lines, to me that means you are running WCG. Rosetta is not part of WCG, so to participate in the Rosetta part of the Pentathlon, you would need to join our Rosetta@Home team, add it in to the BOINC manager, and start running it.

To participate in a BOINC project: - Install and run the BOINC software.
- In the BOINC manager's Simple view click Add Project or, in the manager's Advanced view, click Tools -> Attach to Project. The Attach to Project dialogue appears. Select "Attach to project".
- Select a project from the list. To join a project not in the list, enter the URL of its web site.
URL for the Rosetta@Home project: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta - Select "New user", and enter your email address and a password of your choosing.
- BOINC will open a web page that allows you to set other account data, such as name, country, and preferences.
- Next, search for team 'Crunching@EVGA', click on the team name, and choose to join the team.
- Start crunching tasks
- ...
- Profit!

JaskarnSidhu Ok so how do I join your rosetta@home team? See my post here (1st half) regarding joining a Team. You basically have to set this up (once) for each different Boinc Project that you choose to run and want to associate with our Team. Boinc isn't like WCG where you can sign onto a Team and then all the WCG projects are assigned to that Team. But the Boinc profile stuff is really easy to do once you've done one. Then you just do it once for any other Boinc Projects (User Profiles) that you may choose to run. http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1574072

Tex, I was looking at your chart a little closer and realized each "leg" of the pentathlon only lasts 5 days. So the first leg ends on May 10th at 00:00 UTC (May 9th at 8pm Eastern). At least that's my understanding, but I could (easily) be wrong.

So when I am running Rosetta@home, do I still have to run the WCG program? Or do I need to keep that program open and running in order for this BOINC crunching to work?

actually what you can do is tell boinc not to accept new WCG tasks and you can suspend all tasks that you don't wish to run during the contest (if you have projects being done - not associated with contest) that way only those items in the pentathalon are done the preferred choice is to not accept new tasks for those projects not in the pentathalon - and let them run their course prior to the 5th. (hopefully you will empty those projects out) if you don't you can either finish them out - normally - and and produce less points for the contest - becuase you are doing other projects not in the race or suspend those not in the contest. all depends on the deadlines. if they are too short you'll have to let them run their course

I added the 8pm start time (Eastern) note at the bottom as a reference for US Crunchers. I felt that getting a visual on the two basic contests may help (always helps me) and since males are often mentioned as "visual animals"... . My hope was to also draw some attention to the (2) contests and hopefully get a few others thinking about doing both. I think AB was here, and for that, thank-you for the BR buddy!

Hmm, well now I have a decision to make. Guess I didn't realise that part of the Pentathlon would overlap with the CC. I'll give it all I've got until CC, then switch over on the 15th. To bad I don't have more machines, this whole DC thing can get real addictive real quick, lol.

Just do what you can for sure. I'm gonna be in a "hybrid mode" for a few days with Rigs running both contests. A fair amount of us do that every day anyway to support both areas of our WCG efforts. I really like these short term Treks that we do together and always feel that as a Crunching Team we are small but mighty!!

Read all about it here: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=1566642 It is basically a World-wide Folding Challenge among teams that want to come together to lay down some mega science for Folding@Home, to be Chimps (have some fun with each other) and to claim the "Jaded Monkey" for the top team. Check it out...

I think you are not confused on this one... From the Pentathlon website "Announcements" section: Announcement of the 3rd project in the discipline Showbag The 3rd project of the BOINC Pentathlon in the discipline Showbag is: World Community Grid All credits granted between 05/10/2012, 0.00 (UTC) and 05/15/2012, 0.00 (UTC) will be taken into the BOINC Pentathlon validation. Please note that pending credits cannot be taken into account! The statistics for this project can be found at http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/statistiken/challenge.php?challengeid=3.

I'd recommend choosing one of the other WCG Projects vs Human Proteome since that Project takes sooooo long to get credited. It is the slowest of all the WVG Projects from my experience and to be avoided if you are in a contest with WCG Projects to run.
