Hi

I have a EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 FTW GAMING ACX 3.0 which had the overheating problems.
So I have updated the BIOS, I think Correctly.

What I have noticed is that when playing a game the temp was at 77 degrees according to Tech PowerUp GPU-Z
also the fan didn't seem to be running at the correct percentage rate.

However, when I loaded EVGA Precision XOC immediately I heard the fan speed up to around 60% and the temp dropped to 61 degrees.

So I'm a bit confused, did the BIOS update work?
Do I have to run Precision XOC every time?
Or am I doing something wrong.

Not really up to speed with the working of GPU cards so any advice would help

Thanks

Man If you use precision or MSI afterburner you put the checkbox " start automatically with windows" and it will go to your  start bar.
If you close it the aggressive fan profile are not going to be applied and the BIOS ones that are always applied are mild , they increase your fan speed but not as much.
I have my MSI AB starting up with windows with my OC settings on and a custom fan curve setting up the fans to 100% if it goes above 80 C

    60C 60%
    70C 80%
    80C 100% fan speed

I would keep using MSI afterburner / OCX - unless you are able to load and mess with the bios in nvflash (which I suggest you Don't, unless you know vhdl). also as the Op suggested start Afterburner when windows start, define a manual fan curve, and problem solved

The VBIOS update increased the RPMs by around 400 - not terribly noticeable I'd think.

Manually overriding the VBIOS default fan settings sounds like what happened when you opened PrecisionX. Overriding the default fan settings will obviously bypass whatever the default fan settings in the VBIOS are.

I personally always run  EVGA Precision XOC so I can set a very aggressive fan curve so my GPU never goes above 64C :)

Did the vbios update say it was successful? If yes, then you did it right.

No, you don't have to run precision xoc every time. Sounds like precision xoc is setup to run a more aggressive fan profile than the current fan profile set inside the vbios.

I couldn't say if it was successful as it was a DOS box that popped up and didn't have time read all the text.
It did beep once at the start and end if that says anything.

With the Bios update and not running any games the temp is 40 degrees and the fan runs around 540rpm

MSI Afterburner and Precision X OC are designed to:
    1) help you get the most out of your card through overclocking.
    2) control your cards fan speed/set fan profiles.

Use one of these programs and you can have your fans running however you want.

You asked "Do I have to run Precision XOC every time?"  Uh no you don't.

But I always run one of them (actually I prefer MSI AB) because it lets me control the fans just how I like them.  It's not a hassle at all to use these programs.  Why are you worried about running one?  They work great and are easy to use!
