Well,

I had to take on a second job to pay the bills.  I just had my orientation at Best Buy.  I'll be working in the Home Theater department.  I was wondering if anyone else here works for BB and how they like it?  I have to say, I'm really excited about the employee discount.  Much better than I even hoped it would be.  Better than even Fry's.

As a current Fry's employee... all I can say is enjoy your decent hourly pay.... it's something I miss dearly. Here at Fry's the salesmen are pure commission. If we don't sell we don't get paid. Best Buy also treats their employees much better. Fry's doesn't care about their employees nor do they appreciate them.

I'm thinking about getting a second job as well, Might try Best Buy/Fry's.

I was about to get hired for Walmart in Asset Protection and I failed a certain test... *Teehee*! (This was around March of this year)

Do you guys work there part time or full time? I already have a full time night job, I can barely handle it... Night job is killer. If I got another one, It'd be part time from around 5pm-10pm... which isn't too bad actually, If it's 5 days a week. I'd still want to have my 2 days off though, Like the same ones for both jobs which might be hard to get (My old retail job they gave us random days off each week, Sometimes they weren't even back to back...)

You're better off going to Best Buy than Fry's... I can rant all day about how awful of a place it is to work at. In fact I'll come up with a list just gimme a few...

    Re: Best Buy employee's 2013/10/26 21:50:19 (permalink)
Probably doesn't even cover half of everything, but this is the best I could do for now on some of the dark secrets of Fry's:

    1. Most sales people work strictly on commission ONLY. If you don't sell, you don't get paid. If you don't sell enough to cover minimum wage in commission you start to "owe the company money" in which they call the "draw" and if you're in there long enough you will get fired for it.

    2. Sales people usually get ZERO commission on SALE ITEMS (items marked down lower than normal price)... and also when you do an internet price match it'll come out of the salesman's commission.

    3. No job training. You get a few weeks as a "sales in training" to walk the floor on your own and learn everything by bothering salesmen (which they would have zero interest in helping you anyways because their objective is to sell and get paid, not help somebody who is eventually gonna become their competition).

    4. Company doesn't give a *BEEP* about you. They don't judge you on work ethics or knowledge. Employees are judged by how many PSC (performance service contracts) they sell every week, and nothing else, forcing salesmen to push them really really hard.

    5. Stock/inventory. Fry's has long had relationship problems with their vendors, some really big ones like Western Digital, Seagate, HP, etc. Basically they treat their vendors like crap, and always fall behind on payments or not pay them at all... and as you may have guessed, that translates into low or no stock on everything. How do we sell if we don't have stock, and how do customers buy? We've literally had times where the entire back stock has been reduced to a couple of uninteresting items and nothing more. Everything the customer asks for are out of stock, and the shelves are empty and bare.

    6. Supervisors/managers are on commission as well, which means that they are competing with you to make sales instead of concentrating on doing supervisor/manager work. This has lead to some pretty bad relations between me and a few supervisors. They will tell you to go do some BS and then make a big sale themselves. VERY outrageous indeed.

    7. As a full commission salesman, you are forced to do labor... work that doesn't pay you. Supervisors will tell you to go clean an aisle or stock some stuff or paperwork/schematics. No pay = no incentive. How do you expect quality work if you don't pay someone to do it? Fry's is moving towards getting rid of all hourly positions so that they don't have to pay an employee to be there. Then they could be forced to work for free!

I could go on and on but my fingers grow tired of typing. Some might be surprised at this and some might not. If you want to read more about this stuff you can always look up some Fry's reviews on Yelp... those poor customer reviews make a lot of sense if you ask me.

God, no kidding -- we don't have a Fry's anywhere near me, but I've always stopped in to drool whenever I'm traveling somewhere that has one.  I've always wished we had a Fry's, but no more -- I'll never step foot in one again after hearing this stuff!!  Companies that treat their employees in this fashion don't deserve to survive at all!

BB is very similar to what CompUSA brick-n-mortor was back in the day.  CompUSA was king for a retail tech employee, but failed in marketing services.  Upper management at CompUSA was so pissed off when BB created so much attention to the 'Geek Squad" and Volkswagen propaganda scheme.  Circuit City attempted there own 'services' scheme but failed and bellied up as well.  BB is a 'low ball' employer so I want to make sure nobody is fooling themselves into thinking BB is ALL THAT.  You will miss most of your holiday parties

With the current environment of USA Obamacare in progress, the trend of all retailers and restaurants is to hire 20hrs per week, thus no benefits.  The managers/owners major complaint when hiring is 'no motivation' and you've got to laugh at them.

I believe there's at least two. Can't remember their names though. Maybe they just haven't been around to see the thread yet.

My Brother works for Best Buy and just recently got promoted to Full Time. He has only ever spoken highly about it especially when it came to the employee discount. He talks like he gets anywhere from a 35-70% discount on many items.

Wow. That's crazy about frys. Had no idea. Frys has always been my go to store if I passed one in my travels. Always liked them better than BB because they had so much more stuff to choose from, especially in the PC department. Never dealt with sales people because I generally already know what I'm looking for.

After hearing that I'll have to keep driving next time I see one.

I worked at Best Buy for 2.5 years and I hated it, would say it's like the second worst job i've ever had (worst would be the current one). The company puts revenue/profit before customers or employees which is why they're a failing business. If they have changed this game plan I have yet to notice. The best part of the job was my fellow employees who for the most part were pretty awesome. The discount and other perks were great until they back heavily on that. Overall though i'd say that it's probably a decent place to work for a part time job on the side. I'm sure the experience will vary based on location.

My friend worked Best Buy theater department. I think they get commission. Were you hired on for the Christmas rush? Where do you work? Can you get me a good deal? I love that Best Buy price matches. That way I get my toys today instead of ordering them online, but I still get the good price. The sales tax is really high here though.

The best part of the job was my fellow employees who for the most part were pretty awesome. The discount and other perks were great until they back heavily on that. Overall though i'd say that it's probably a decent place to work for a part time job on the side. I'm sure the experience will vary based on location.

Man... that sounds like my last IT job. It started off awesome... this this "super fantastic merger" came through... at least they said it was going to be awesome for us . It was like the company went into a survive mode and demanded their IT people to start selling... even the installers were pushed to sell to customers on site.

I worked for bby for about 10 years, in and out of the store. Most of that was in home services. I think your feelings about your job has to do a lot with the ppl and location you work at. I know lots of ppl who love it and ppl who hate it too. I think they treat their ppl very well and I enjoyed working there, and will go back if the small company I work for now doesn't make it. Anything you want to know about bby/magnolia/geek squad just ask

I would highly suggest working for Samsung within Best Buy's retail locations. It pays better, but has no discount. You don't sell anything, but simply advise customers on Samsung products at their location within the store. I passed interviews and had the job lined up to go to Texas for a week for training (which I heard was awesome) - but school is happening and it costs them too much to train their employees. I went to two different stores and the guys were actually knowledgeable compared to some of the tech illiterate employees I've met at BB and Microcenter.

Search for Mosaic jobs on Google, that's the company who does the initial screening for the positions.

My girlfriend worked at Best Buy for roughly 2 years. Their turn over rate is extremely high on employees, not because they fire them, it's because they quit when they realize how bad of a company it is to work for. Consider this, she was considered a long term employee at only 2 years... I wouldn't ever advise anyone to go to Best Buy for employment.

As a secondary job you can always walk out of, best buy will probably suffice. But if you heavily rely on it for main bills I wouldn't suggest it as Best Buy has some very high turn over rate which makes for a very poor environment to work in. I would also never work retail for that reason. It is a miserable field to be in as they require sales sales sales.
