I have just recived a PM from a member asking about why his Ambient Occlusion setting was greyed out in his Nvidia control panel....

It appears that the setting when using stereoscopic 3D  ->It is "greyed out" in the global settings tab
And can only be found in the Program Setting TAB of the NVCP under the BFBC2.exe.
*I have no idea if it will work or not.

Since I have no experience with a 3D surround config and BFBC2, I really cannot share any (personal) information about running the game with such a setup...

Sorry guys, I am waiting for new monitor models to be released before making that upgrade for BF3

Hi Maniac,

I decided to reset my global setting in NVCP and use the BFBC2 program settings instead just in case it might affect another game. But according to NVCP in the BFBC2 settings Ambient Occlusion is not supported whether on or off in Global.

But even with it off in the Global settings I see no difference in game play as far as the now and from my first post here, reaction seems faster too. Still a good guide to me.

Thanks for putting together this guide.

Is there any way you could explain a little more in detail as to what FOV is affected by and how someone would go about getting a good setting?

I noticed you recommended 75 but another comment on this thread said 65.

FOV or Field of view is the degree of viewing angle that is shown on the screen.
55 degrees (BFBC2 default) is commonly used by consoles, as the reduced angle results in much less pixels having to be displayed. That is done, because of the memory and graphics restrictions in consoles....
There is very little, if any need to be forced to use such a restricted viewing angle with full computer setups.

This setting can be adjusted to "taste" for what you feel gives you the "best" experience.
Please feel free to input different numbers (max is 120) and try them out. I only recommended the value of 75 based on my own personal testing and what I feel is the max value (75) before the "fisheye effect" begins to become noticable...

Please try stepping up the value 10 points at a time and test the effect yourself and you find that value that works best for YOU

I have been playing at 55 and just tried at 75. HUGE difference. Everything seems so far away. But that is only because I am use to the 55. I also came across a FOV calculator for BC2. http://www.rjdown.co.uk/p...fbc2/fovcalculator.php I don't really understand it though? My monitor is 16x9 native 1600x900 resolution.

Just an update. I put pretty much every setting on low at one point and still got a CTD. Maniac, is it possible that my CPU overclock is causing this? I know that the obvious answer is yes since I have been OC'ing for quite a long time. But I dismissed this as a possible problem because everything else was running fine and my temps were stable and low. Well, this is the only option I have left as to what is causing the problem and I will try it next. I know, it should have probably been one of the first things I should've tried. But again, I dismissed it because everything else was fine. If this doesn't work I can only re-install the game or upgrade hardware. Or reinstall windows. I am running out of options here. I am confident that your guide holds the answer to my problem. And you did mention OC'ing as a possible cause of CTD. I will let you know what happens. Thanks again for everything.

The answer is yes.
The BFBC2 enigine is well known for being sensitive to overclocks. My suggestion is to either drop your overclock 1-200mhz -or- add a small amount of voltage to your CPU.. Both suggestions have been known to be very helpful.

Dude thanks so much!! Your BC2 settings have helped me a bunch! No more crashes from the Bloom and I also found my sound was set to low, sounds so much better now on high! And the FOV looks great! Though I turned it down it 65.

I have been waiting a looooong time to say this, BFBC2 was stable last night!!!  Thanks a ton maniac. Using your guide and a process of elimination I was at long last able to determine my problem. I returned my OC'd cpu to its stock settings and there were no CTD's or BSOD's after more than an hour of game play!
Now, I know that this was just one night.  And I will need many more hours of game play to be satisfied 100% that my system is stable. But what happened last night has never happened. So I am very optomistic.
If you are someone who has just found this post and are having cronic stability issues with BFBC2, read maniacs guide. And read it in its entirety! That was a problem for me when I read it the first time. I saw some things in it that I was sure was my problem.  It turned out that the answer to my problem was somewhere else in the guide. Read this post, eliminate possible causes one by one and you will find your answer. I did!!!
Thanks again maniac! Now that I am on my way to a stable BC2 I can focus on my gaming. It was just awesome last night! I was actually finishing rounds! And not losing my score every F-ing time! Once I am confident that I am stable I can adjust my settings a bit and see what exactly my set up can handle. I am so excited!

The game engine is definitely sensitive to CPU overclocks or lack of higher CPU voltage.
I have also found that a CTD or BSOD free experience is directly related to memory overlocks & timings.
Overclocked memory runs fine, but run stability tests before launching the game.
BFBC2 is very sensitive to memory timings, especially the tRC and CR settings.
With my 1866 RipjawsX, I could pass all stability tests with a tRC of 35 and a 1T CR.
But with BFBC2, a much different story, had to settle with a tRC of 37 and a 2T CR.

Maniacvvv,

Thank you very much for this brilliant guide in tweaking the settings in BC2! The game looks so much more incredible than before I can't believe how good it looks.

I have a couple of questions/doubts that are specific to my rig so perhaps you can help.

First, the game is absolutely stable and rock solid even with my CPU OC (4.41GHz) and GPU OC (850MHz).

I have 3 EVGA GTX-580 3GB in Tri-SLI so they're working great. The Ambient Occlusion setting is 'grayed out' and I am not able to change the settings under the "Program Specific" control (I don't want to change the global settings). How do I enable to it to "Quality" or whatever is best for a Tri-SLI rig?

Secondly, I'm playing at 8100x1600px so the FoV being at 55 makes the sides look stretched. I have to LOWER it to make it somewhat tolerable but it's really hard to play like that. For example, if I set the FoV to 35, it looks like I'm running in the same spot (like a treadmill). I suppose I have to sit really far back but what is the ideal FoV for playing at this high resolution? I have it set right now to 45 and I'm getting used to it but do you have any good suggestions regarding that?

Thirdly, since I'm playing at such a high resolution, my AA settings are at 16xCSAA. Even if I change it to 16xQ CSAA, the game crashes to desktop. The same happens with 32XCSAA as well. I'm assuming that's way too high even for 3GB GTX-580s? Also, with my current settings (everything on HIGH, 16xAF, 16xCSAA, etc.) I get around 90-105FPS. If I turn HSAO (HBAO) 'ON', the FPS drops to around 45-50FPS. I just left it off but why is HSAO making such a big difference in FPS?

Lastly, is it possible for you to do a similar guide just for the NVCP for Crysis 2? If you were able to make BC2 look so much better with tweaking some settings in NVCP, I can't wait to see what we can do with Crysis 2 DX11/High-Res Textures already looking fantastic!

Thanks again.

Your welcome

The answer to your first question is the NVCP AO is not supported in surround setups...

For you second question, I would suggest trying different values until you find your own "sweet" spot.

For your third question I dont really have an answer for the higher AA levels at the screen res you are using. As far as in in-game HASO setting, yeah its a known framerate killer made much much worse the the huge screen size your running.

*note: use afterburner or precision to look at your videocard RAM use, if its not topped off.. there may be an issue, as AA levels do not cause a crash when they run out on memory space, the frames just drop and it might start buffering on the hard drives...

I cannot tell you how nice the feedback is to get

Its doubtful I'll do a Crysis2 guide, but you can COUNT on a BF3 Guide the day its released to BETA

Knock on wood I haven't had any problems with the game and I have tried your settings and all is still well except for invisible water.

2D surround triple monitor and triple sli 580 GTX with 270.61 is working fine for me in BFBC2, except for invisible water.

Have any suggestions?

Make sure there is not a "space" between the equal sign and the number in the settings file.
it should look like this =9

Remember, after making changes to the settings file you can LOOK at the the in-game Adavanced panel. But if you make any changes in that panel, some values in the settings file will revert to defaults.
*Also: if the "in game" Options setting panel (advanced) is showing AA at 1, then your ARE running DX9

I just changed the water setting in the config file since I don't see a setting in game.  It was "high" and was still invisible in "medium" but it works fine in "low".  I'm running 32x CSAA application controlled.  Everything is maxed and I have the same settings as you in nvidia control panel and in game.  I'm curious if your water is visible on medium  and high.  You can see my system in my sig.

I too would like to figure out how to enable ambient occlusion but it is also greyed out in my NVCP.

I do not have any 3D software installed and I am running a single monitor at 120hz(have a feeling it has to do with this)

I've tried everything and cannot get it to enable, searched google high and low with no answer.

Thanks for your question

It appears that BFBC2 uses a in-game based HBAO that supported within the engine. The NVCP setting is NOT needed.

And Geforce.com shows it as a (in-game) menu based item (580 using 266.58)

After reading up, neither your screen res or your refresh rate should effect using the setting.
The only things which appear to prevent doing so are using hardware, programs or games which do NOT support the setting.

Since I do not know the exact setup you are using (and have no experience using 120hz)...
I'm not really able to give you a good answer as to why its greyed out on your setup, except to say that if the in-game HABO is set to TRUE, then you are getting the full effect as supported by the game. It appears that the Nvidia control panel setting does NOT effect how BFBC2 displays its in-game HABO rendering (as best as I understand).

It might be something in your setup, like a app or program overlay that does not support AO that is keeping the NVCP setting greyed out.. I really dont know bro.

Its a very good question

As with all NVCP settings and different game engines, Googling, playing around and testing are the best way to find out what works best on a given config and what settings give you the image quality and performance your looking for...

Sorry I cannot give you a more definitive answer.

I didn't know the FOV value was changeable. Put it at 70 and it looks great!

Ok, final update. You can play BFBC2 on an older system like mine. Without crashing too! Thanks maniac. No CTD since your help. I am running game in DX9 currently with everything on medium except static objects, water, sound and effects. They are all on low. And no OC. I may try going back to DX10 and some other adjustments eventually, to see just what I can handle. But stability is a beautiful thing!
