So I have switched to 280.26 driver and it did not remedy the problem.  I proceeded to turn down all of the settings and try it in every DX version, vsync on or off, regardless of resolution, and it still does the same thing.  I'm going to try turning off NVCP settings tomorrow, but atm, I'm at a loss.

Sorry your still having issues...

If I remember correctly, you moved the game over to your SSD.
How full is your SSD? When was the last time you allowed your SSD some "trim" pass time?

I was having this issue on my HDD also, but I have a healthy 40GB of space left one my ssd where it currently resides, so I should be fine with the garbage collection there.  I did re-install the game, too.  I'm hoping it's one of my settings in NVCP and not a hardware issue.

The only settings I'm aware of that could cause such an issue, would be too high of a AA level, a mis-match between the frames to render ahead in the NVCP and the BFBC2 settings file or using some type of third party overlay.

I have tried everyting on your post.I followed everything to the letter. I Can play any other game almost on max without any problem but, after awhile BFBC2 freezes and my computer is inoperable. I dont know if its an underlying problem or my internet. I just moved to college and the internet sucks. I dont think that it would cause my entire computer to freeze when playing this game. This problem happens at random and can happen from 5 to 30 minutes after I load up Multiplayer. I can play the story mode just fine. Could you please help me diagnose the problem. If it is an Audio problem I could always pick up a card at Frys or something. Im so frustrated because I bought this game and I want to play it. Im thinking of reinstalling my entire computer becasue I want to play it so badly. I recently installed my OS again and all my specs are at stock. I dont think that my hardware could cause the problem. If its not possible to help I guess Ill just wait for BF3. Thanks for your time.

After testing, I am now personally using Nvidia's latest 285.27 driver for BFBC2

This is now the driver I recommend for BFBC2

First of all thank you Maniac for the awesome guide and all its explanations!  I used this to stable my G73 laptop

Unfortunately though, I'VE EXHAUSTED ALL AVENUES TO STABILIZE MY DESKTOPS FROM CTD's!

BC2 is my favorite modern FPS, however it is a beast of instability!

At this point I may have to put it to rest and wait patiently for EA/DICE's next beast of instability.  (I sure hope it surprises me though)

I built a new machine  to ramp up for BF3 and consequently enjoy BC2 more with a triple 23" LCD set up 5760x1080.

My Asus Laptop with the 5870 is rock solid with BC2

My stupid expensive desktop I recently sold and now the new one I built cannot stop Crashing to Desktop.

Previous machine:
780i EVGA
QX9650 @ 4GHz
DDR2 800 @ typical mem timings
GTX280 X 3 Tri SLI

Current Rig:
EVGA Z68 FTW
2500K from 4 - 4.7GHz various voltage settings  12 hour Prime 95 tested
Corsair Vengence Mem 14 hour memtest86 no error (running now at 9 9 9 24 2T instead of 8 8 8 24 2T to see if that was an issue)
GTX580 x 2 SLI   Stock Clocked

Tried all the recommended drivers.
Tried the new 285 beta's (work well until the typical CTD)
Tried DX9 (as much as it sucks to go backwards, still no avail)

This utterly sucks!

Cosmos 1000 --- Windows 7  dual boot --- EVGA Z68 FTW
2500k @ 4.7 @ 1.38v (12 hour Prime95 stable)

EVGA GTX580 3GB x 2 SLI  890/1780/2004 @ 1.088v --- 285.27 Beta Drivers
240GB OCZ Vertex 3 --- Samsung Spinpoint 1TB 7200rpm

So I threw a BF and they gave me my money back. I trotted over to Target and bought another copy. WEll I poped it in and behold my after intsalling my game still crashed. So im going to RMA my stupid crap of a Graphics card and hopefully get anew one. WOW all the hell ive been through.

Thanks man, that would be appreciated.

I just got done playing another hour session with 3 crashes to desktop.

I could try going back to one monitor but that really defeats the whole purpose of picking up 3 of them as well as the second GTX580.  I could've saved quite a few bucks if I had known the software is just not mature enough.  Much hopes in BF3

Ive been in utter hell with this game as well. Its been two weeks and I cant seem to find out what the problem is. I reinstalled my Computer 3 times and I have done maniac's instructions to the T. I hate this game. I hope to God that my problem is my video card but im not sure. I guess if I cant fix the problem within the next week 5 days ill give up and play my other games and wait for BF3. I know how you feel. Its such a good game and it feels awful because it keeps crashing and you want to pwn some noobs.

I've lost the AA transparency option to enable multi/supersampling in the nVidia control panel for BC2 profile, with the new 285.27 drivers its there in the global options and under the new BF3 profile, anyone ideas on this?

Did you follow the correct uninstall/install procedure?  http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=1174372
Sounds alot like you did not perform a clean install.
Have you tried to "reset" your BFBC2 profile in the "Program Tab"?
You should try another uninstall/install, following the correct steps (shown in the guide).. if you still are having problems.

*using the "Global Tab" (as suggested in my guide) will still allow those features to function...

 @Maniacvvv,

Seems I posted too soon in my last post. After thinking it was fixed, I started getting the freezing, and crashing again. I tried one last thing that finally worked. I updated PunkBuster, and I played a few hours last night without any problems. Just wanted to let you know that now it's finally fixed. Just hope I didn't just jinx myself by posting this.  LOL!       :)

I have a minor issue, but I'm monitoring it daily now.
Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias, I set it to clamp but it randomly reverts back to Allow.
I also was getting frequent CTD's over the past several days.
Don't know if this setting contributed and/or it was a PB update issue.

So I haven't had much time to play games lately, much less fiddle with my rig, but today I played for a few hours and noticed that in addition to the gun recoil, on some larger weapons exhibit this stuttering when moving laterally and then allowing the weapon to 'settle', as well as jumping with said weapons.  Also, something I think is related; things like birds and the jets that occasionally fly across the sky on certain maps exhibit this stuttering independent from the environment.  I've also noticed the behavior when hip-firing rockets.  Today I think I may either roll back to an earlier driver version or try the beta, but beyond that, I guess I have to live with it.

EDIT:  Installing 285.27 proved unfruitful for solving this issue.  Ugh.

I've tried many combinations of settings, both software and hardware and haven't come up with a solution.  Of all the problems I listed above, is it most likely a graphics card or CPU issue if there were a hardware problem?

The part concerning the maximum pre-rendered frames helped me. Initially having ATI cards, I ran across helpful hints, one was to set the RenderAheadLimit to 0 in the ini file.

Moving to NVidia, it was still set to 0, and the default of 3 in Nvidia control panel were causing a little stuttering.

Stop with the unboxing videos already, it is this generations "mullet hair cut".

The r11 client patch is incoming for BFBC2

The servers will begin to update to the new patch on Wed 9/21/2001

Here is the release change log

  • Removed some memory leaks
  • Fixed crashes when the game attempted to render lots of content (high detail, high FOV or multiple-monitor modes); this should particularly help multi-monitor users
  • Chat window no longer causes lag spikes
  • Chat window reworked opacity & visibility-time is controllable through settings in settings.ini
  • Clantag is remembered when using auto-login
  • Banner URLs can be up to 252 characters in length
  • SecuROM wrapper removed from non-Steam version
  • Minor performance enhancements
  • Reduced rubberbanding on >24p servers
  • PrintScreen takes a screenshot, file stored in Documents\BFBC2\Screenshots directory

Here is the link for the direct download file, to run the patch manually from the destop  http://static.cdn.ea.com/dice/u/f/bfbc2/Static/BFBC2_PC_Client_R11_795745_Patch.exe

*Users should NOT install this update until the servers have begun to update tomorrow

WARNING:
The above patch is NOT compatible with STEAM versions of BFBC2.
-->If your using a STEAM BFBC2 copy DO NOT USE THIS PATCH, you must update thru STEAM.

*Important Note about a BUG in the patch:
"If your Windows username contains non-English characters (such as ö, ý, etc) then PunkBuster will not activate properly. To work around this, ensure that your Windows username uses only characters from the English character set. In other words, "7-bit ASCII only, please".
We caught this at the very end of the QA pass, and decided that it was better to deliver the build to the public than to give it another tour through the whole patch generation and QA process."

i was going to post this (the patch is already available for non steam users ) but you would have to wait till Wednesday ;

The update is now live

REPORT:
I have installed the patch and quickly tested 3 maps....

The manual patch was painless and quick (it did not overwrite older patches)
The in-game settings as well as the BFBC2 settings file was unchanged (you will not have to redo them)
The 3 maps ran normally and the game performed as expected without any issues seen.

For just a quick test, the patch seems OK

It remains to be seen what the final verdict will be... but so far so good.

It will be interesting to see what multi monitor users report.....
