So, I built a new PC back in January and had an issue with restarting that ended up coming down to the motherboard, after finally getting a new motherboard and the PC was operational finally, I ran into an issue while playing CSGO. After about 30 minutes of playing my screen went grey/tan and the system hanged (I could hear jittery audio, but the system was unresponsive) that required me to hard restart. Fast forward about a week later and after about an hour or so game of CSGO, I had alt tabbed to do some browsing while waiting on a new queue and upon alt-tabbing back in, while the screen was black during mid alt-tab the system hanged again (i don't think any audio was present) requiring a hard reboot. This time however, when I got back in game the graphics felt jittery but I had fair FPS still. I attempted to reboot to see if it would fix the jittery-ness but to no avail. I did notice that I use to get around 400 FPS in CSGO regularly, but last night I was averaging around 290-300 (not sure if this is any indication). Here are the PC specs: CPU: i7-4790k (stock) CPU cooler: Corsair H90 Motherboard: Asus Maxmus VII Gene Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (2x8) GPU EVGA GTX 980 ACX 2.0 4GB PSU: Corsair 760w OS: Win 8.1 pro I can provide additional information if needed. Thanks in advance!

The black screen is a blue screen driver crash that interrupts your graphics to make it black. To my knowledge, there is not a definite solution but you could always reinstall the drivers. Nvideas drivers have some unresolved issues that I noticed a few years ago with this same problem on my GTX 460 and they still haven't fixed it. I could be wrong and it's just a hardware issue somewhere else but in my case I never fixed it even after I got my 970 although it's only happend once or twice since then.
So, unless someone has an alternative solution... You know...

Thanks for the reply! So I re-installed the drivers, but the PC still froze, this time while playing GTA5 for about an hour. I did figure out why CSGO felt choppy, apparently when it crashed it removed the launch option to force 120hz, readding that made it feel smooth again. Now to figure out the freezing. Open to suggestions!

Just an update: while playing GTA5 the game froze, but my system did not lock up and I was able to get back to desktop via going to task manager. In the event log I see "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." Event ID 4101. So I tried loading up GTA again and I got the error immediately, same with CSGO. I have not tried rebooting to see if that'll at least clear the issue.

I had this same issue a few years ago and with my 460 and I really don't think there was a solution. But when I got my 970 it went away for a long time and it was Payday 2 and CoH2 that would crash buzzing in the onboard audio (bad). So I knew it wasn't just the display driver because the MoBo driver or hardware didn't like it either and I got a few dump files that pointed to drivers. But the issue went away, probably because I don't play those games, or maybe I did something that fixed it without knowing it. Since its a bluescreen issue, look in your dump file (C:/windows/dump) for a dump with a time stamp of one of your crashes. If you don't have one then let your PC crash and give it 5minutes. I can tell you in my case it wasn't the card, tried diffrient 460's and even a 970. It wasn't a reformat solution and it wasn't something solvable by reinstalling the drivers. You would think EVGA would know because it seems kind of common.

Nope, both cpu & gpu should be at stock. Vlada011 NVIDIA Drivers work 99% when hardware is OK and Windows in good condition.
Card was bought in January, and win is a fresh install once I got the new mobo from Asus about 2-3 weeks ago. bsmegreg Since its a bluescreen issue, look in your dump file (C:/windows/dump) for a dump with a time stamp of one of your crashes. I will check when I get home this evening, is there something i'm looking for specifically with the dump files? thanks for all the replies

I did not have a windows/dump folder, only a /minidump/ with "041215-6140-01.dmp" in it. As well in the /windows/ folder there is a "memory.dmp" i used "BlueScreenView" and it says the crash file in minidump was caused by ntoskrnl.exe

What is the bug check string & bug check code for the 041215-6140-01.dmp? Try doing the following to see if it helps stop your black screen/freeze... #1 Perform a clean boot of windows. #2 Perform a clean installation of latest video drivers. - Uninstall Precision X/Afterburner if installed, make sure to select "no" to saving profiles if asked. Reboot the PC now if you had to uninstall PX or Afterburner.
- Download & save graphics driver 350.12 to your desktop. Run the graphics installer located on your desktop once the download is complete.
- Select custom advanced install, under custom installation options uncheck all options except the physx system software, if you have a 3D capable monitor and would like to use 3D at some point please select both 3D options, check mark perform clean install, then click next to install the driver, reboot when asked.
#3 Download & install the latest version of nvidia inspector. Install nvidia inspector to directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\nvidiainspector\" #4 Download my nvidia inspector fan control .exe's and place them on your desktop. Link #5 Double click on 100% Fan. GPU fan should be loud at this point. #6 Launch CSGO/GTA5 with the GPU fan running at 100% and test for black screens/freezes. Report back with your results.

It's not the card, RMA would leave you in the same spot you're at now.

It's deffinitly the computer but it's not the card. I would say it's just a fatal error and why it's caused is anyone's guess... You could try an RMA but I'm skeptical if it would help. Computers are touchy and it's probably a read/write issue occurring and it could be caused by anything but whatever is causing it is not bad, it's just not working right for some reason. Basically, your PC is probably getting a 0 instead of a 1 and can't understand.

I hate most when I read some customers had problem and he RMA everything and at the end he figure out that something completely different is problem... Example last time I read about some who curse CORSAIR PSU but he nicely explain that he RMA everything and at the end only PSU stay and he figure out that he is culprit... Instead to check nicely and save 100$ for shipping and losing nerves. I RMA only when I know what is problem 100%. And than sometimes I don't RMA at all, I lose money and that's it. Even if I save months to buy what I like.

awesome, i'll try them this evening when I get home. Quick question though, The minidump i posted was from 4/12 which may have been when I got the grey/tan screen crash, but there is no current minidump for my recent issues, could it be something unrelated, or maybe it's hardware since there is no dump? thanks again for the suggestions

I reread the article I sent you and want you to do three general things.
1) Update BIOS 2) Run CHKDSK (hard drive error check) 3) Download OOCT and run the GPU test with the memory error check at 2000mb, this should make your card run at 4GB vram and may cause your issue. Use GPU-Z to varify it's using your vram to 4GB. If your PC crashes there then it would tell us all its deffinitly your GPU.
If that doesn't work than I'm stumped.

awesome, i'll do these first since it'll be quicker, than if all else fails i'll go Sajin's route. I have 3 HDDs in the system, should i do chkdsk on all three or just the OS hdd?
