Re: BOINC Pentathlon 2014 2014/05/15 16:19:20 (permalink)
With just a few days left I am wondering where to go from here. I jumped off of Pogs to go full out with Enigma then planned to jump full out into Poem. But Poem is the problem due to a lack of sufficient work. I get a dribble and drab here and there but it's not enough to keep one of my two machines working full time. I have been filling in with Enigma tasks.

I have to wonder if we would not be better off as a team to just ignore Poem at this point and double down on Enigma and then jump back to Pogs full time the last few days instead of trying to split our efforts like we are now. In short concentrate our efforts some where they might make a difference instead of the losing proposition, at least its looking that way to me, of trying to cover all the bases.

Lets put it this way. After taking a good look at our output and our standings in the various categories on the Pentathlon page a song popped into my head.

Slip sliding awaaaaaay.......

Looking at the stats, I think we are pretty much locked in at Enigma.  We have improved our output each day but BOINC.Italy is still outperforming us and with only one day left I don't think we can gain much there.  Same with POGS.  In my opinion I think the best we can do is hold onto what we've got, unless someone has a stash they are sitting on as a last minute surprise.

I hope none of our close competitors are looking, but I've got a very large cache of POEM in progress - enough to pull us up at least 3 places there.  If we totally abandon POEM the gaps will increase to where the bunker won't be very effective.

That's nice to know Punchy. In that case I'll keep running what little Poem tasks I can get, which seems to be about a dozen a day at this point.

Well, great to hear Punchy!
And there are some other that managed to snag a considerable amout of work.
The admin from POEM has now enabled a limit on tasks per computer, so all additional work we can snag helps.

I would be hammering POEM too if I could get any. All of my rigs are running POEM alongside Enigma or pogs, which appears to have only grabbed about 10 today in all. Trying the best I can.

I think I can deliver poem's to the last minute, I've got 536 in progress.
I'll try to grab some more, and put other stuff on hold.

Edit. tried to switch over on a couple of rig's, they don't have work atm. I put those who can make a difference to fetch work, so if POEM can deliver some WU's during the weekend, we will possibly get some.

I sure haven't been able to get any POEM work on my second rig.  I've got almost 1200 on the first rig that should finish in time.  I see some of our nearby teams have dropped their bunkers overnight, increasing the gaps, so I hope we can get some new work to try and keep them in range.

After being overtaken by RKN in Enigma I stopped there and currently let my POEM tasks run on that rig. Should at least keep them at bay a bit

You mean Rechenkraft?  Did you notice we just pulled ahead of them again?  I wouldn't give up on Enigma just yet...  Of course if you are lucky enough to get POEM work, that's good too.  I try and try but there is never any new work.

It could be a photo finish today in Enigma with RKN!  Plus, Meisterkuehler.de is hiding behind us, and they have a habit of dropping huge bunkers just before the end.

Edit: Oh boy, just got 7 POEM WU's, I feel so privileged!

We currently are in  danger of losing a spot in Enigma, but we´re pretty safe in pogs.
The enigma stretch ends in 6h, so we need all the power we can get for the sprint to the finish line.

Lucky! I was graced with 2! And even that was exciting to get.

BTW, your bunker was outed on the shoutbox by rillian.

Just under 20 minutes until the Enigma portion of the Pentathlon ends. I have four tasks that might make the dead line. Pogs is set to allow new work and will be taking Enigma's place on my systems. I still have Poem enabled but I don't expect the Poem admins to have any work for us until way after the Pentathlon ends.

I think that was a good finish for us in Enigma. Held 12th despite some bunkers behind us, and even ended closer to 11th than 13th. Changing everything over to pogs now!

I've cut off Enigma, turned Poem and Pogs on full blast.  Poem has 100 resource share and Pogs 0, just in case Poem tasks become available.  Otherwise it's a steady diet of Pogs here on out.  🍔

Okay that's news to me - I didn't realize that a project would run with a resource share of zero.

Yes it will. But being set to zero means it won't even try unless your system has a processor without any work or your task list gets empty enough to start looking for work. When it does go looking it will hit up all the projects you have enabled saving any set to zero for last.

I always keep a back up project set to zero so it will kick in if a server goes down or a project runs out of work and I didn't see it coming. Right now I have Poem at 100, Pogs at 0, GPU Grid 100, and Milkyway at 0.
