Soon EVGA will be launching a new Gaming site, to kick this off we also have an exclusive interview lined up with Tim Sweeney of Epic Games! Tim is the mastermind behind one of the most popular game engines today, Unreal Engine 3. This time we would like some, if not all of the questions to come from the community. All you need to do is post a question in this thread for Tim Sweeney and EVGA will select between 10-20 questions. The users whose questions end up being chosen get a free EVGA tshirt! (1 shirt max per person) Please limit the questions to maximum of 3 per person, we will close this thread January 28th, 2010. Some guidelines for a good question: - Remember that Tim Sweeney is a hardware/game technology guru, so please keep the questions in this topic.
- Technical questions are better as opposed to gameplay questions.
- Hardware technologies/game engine questions are good.
- His thoughts on game technologies such as DX11, Tessellation, PhysX, etc are suitable.

1. I'm sure you prefer the Unreal engine, but what are your thoughts on an engine such as Cryengine 3 that allow simultaneous development of a game for major platforms and allow graphics to look beautiful on PCs while scaling them down for consoles? 2. Do you plan to adopt DX11 in some of your games faster than DX10? 3. Can I have a T-Shirt?

Mr. Sweeney the Unreal Engine is probably one of the most popular engines ever. Do you see yourself creating another Unreal Engine incorporating DX11 in the next couple of years?

Tim, Im running 3 EVGA 385 (2GB) in SLI.. I also have a EVGA 240 Super Clocked.. what can be done to make gamer say OMG!! look at those graphics on both of these cards? Also can a older game engine be made to look sharper/better with only a hardware update? or does it also require an engine update?

1.)Tim, as a hardware/game guru, how do you feel about the future of gaming with the addition of 3d coming into the picture, and will it truly be asserted into gaming as we know it in the next few generations of games? 2.) Will dx11 actually push the threshold of photo realistic gaming to that next level or are we just looking at more of the same, and the consistently slow production of games that include dx11, will it get any better?

1.) How long do you think it will be before real time raytracing becomes the norm for Movies? How about for the video game industry? 2.) I've seen the tessellation demo's from nvidia's GF100, how long do you think it will be before developers fully embrace this technology and use to the full extent & level of gaming and detail it can support?

1.) Tim Sweeney as you’re probably aware, during this CES 2010 3D stole a decent portion of the focus in visual technology. With the already in place Nvidia 3D in mind, does the team at Epic Games have any plan to convert the Unreal Engine into 3D in the foreseeable future?

1. Tim, Do you see Epic Games planning to embrace the new Tesselation and Double Precision technologies in the near future? 2. Thanks to Chizow for pointing this out. Unreal Engine 3 has integrated PhysX from its inception, so what what kind of improvements could be made to get more FPS with PhysX enabled and on a single GPU card, such as a GTX 260/285 or an HD 5870? 3. What are your thoughts on DX 11 and the features it holds?

1. Obviously the Unreal engine is SOLID, are you going to optimize the net code in GOW3 compared to GOW2? To the point where host isn't noticeable? 2. Is GOW3 going to be out for the Xbox 360 or is it going to be saved for the next generation?

Hello Tim, and by the way, I enjoyed hearing your rather informative conversation with Jen-Hsun Huang at the Nvidia CES2k10 presentation; anyway, I hope these questions will be decent, if not challenging enough for you. 1) As far as the whole evolution of gaming goes, precisely how adaptive is the Unreal Engine 3 to being molded and shaped to progress with the newer hardware technologies coming out, as it's done with the hardware released so far during it's already dominant presence within the gaming community? 2) One of the latest and greatest features to come out on the Nvidia graphics platform is the introduction of 3-Dimensional multi-monitor spanning for game play, named 3D Vision Surround. Is there already implementation being developed to take advantage of this technology within the Unreal Engine 3, and if so, what would it entail to update or upgrade the current code to include that new code, which would obviously also be versatile enough to satisfy the lower capabilities of older hardware without the feature? 3)What is it like to be known as by far 1 of the top geeks for us fellow geeks to admire and strive to achieve a level of greatness similar to?
Just as any other form of art, modding is a passion, not just a hobby. We fawn over it, we love it, we hold it near and dear to our hearts, we are passionate about it. We are modders, and we are artists. Also, if you like any of the advice I give, please recommend I get a BR, thanks!

1. As a gamer that suffers from vertigo/sickness from poorly coded games what are you guys doing to ensure smooth gameplay while looking good? I usually build myself fast systems to get maximum fps because of this and still I see games released I can play for about 2 minutes before I uninstall it.

1) For a little over 5 years, the clock speeds of stock CPUs has remained static. It seems that focus for processors and operating systems is almost entirely focused on parallelism. I've heard game developers say that there are certain tasks that just can't be threaded, suggesting that clock speed is still a major factor. Do you feel the "Megahertz Race" needs to be ignited again? 2) What do you predict the future of sound to be, now that Vista/Win 7 have (mostly) killed direct sound? I really enjoy games that can take advantage of EAX, but there are so few of them.

DX11 is supposed to make development of games easier. With teams supposedly able to spend less time debugging between graphics platforms, what sort of gains do you expect to be made with dev cycles after the DX11 implementation, and will that time still be lost due to DX10 compatibility? Also what will shortened dev cycles do for the length and quality of single player games?

Mr. Sweeney, 1. Do you think that weve hit the proverbial fork in the road for the Unreal Engine 3, where as the tech coming out, gt100 or fermi say, is so far ahead that Unreal 3 cant adopt to it and a whole new Unreal Engine (4?) will have to be developed to take advantage of the benefits of that tech? 2. I've seen you say in past articles that you don't program as much anymore, do you want to get back to Programming for your next Unreal Engine or are you fine with the position you've taken in Development and Research? 3. Where do you see the Unreal Engine in the Cell phones market? Is that even possible?!?!?!? Thanx for taking my questions EVGA and Mr. Sweeney~!!! \m/

- 1. What's next for the Unreal Engine? Will Epic integrate DX11 features into UE3 or will we have to wait until UE4 and the next-gen consoles? Its understood developer adoption of DX11 will rely on cross-platform development currently anchored by DX9, however, it will be much more difficult to implement DX11 if the game engine doesn't support it natively.
- 2. Unreal Engine 3 has integrated PhysX from its inception, what are your thoughts on the advancements offered by GPU accelerated PhysX and are there any plans to further integrate advanced PhysX libraries like Apex into UE3 to facilitate developer adoption in the future?
- 3. Epic has openly stated they're going to take a cross-platform approach to developing games due to numerous issues on the PC, such as piracy. However, it seems Epic has largely abandoned the PC as a 1st party developer. GoW2 remaining XBox360 exclusive for example while the original made it to the PC eventually. Is this just a shift in corporate strategy? Or can we expect to see some Epic love on the PC again?
- 4. The Batman Arkham Asylum Anti-Aliasing issue between Nvidia and AMD. What's your take on it? Any plans to integrate AA support into UE3 or UE4 natively to avoid such issues in the future?
- 5. UE3 is one of the better threaded game engines out there, you've gone into some detail in the past saying its 2 heavy duty threads (rendering and physics) with some lighter duty helper threads (sound, input, AI etc). Now that Quad core CPUs are much more prevalent and AI/physics are even more prominently featured in games, particularly in cross-platform/console ports, are there any changes that can be made to UE3 to make better use of additional CPU capabilities on the PC?
- 6. UE3, imo, offers the best balance of graphics, technical capabilities and performance on the PC (or any platform for that matter). But what's up with the heavily pixelated shadow maps? Any improvements planned for this? DX11, Gather4 and jittered sampling came to mind immediately here.
- 7. Unreal Tournament 3 while a critical success, was largely a disappointment from a commercial and community standpoint when it launched. While it had a brief resurgence over a year later with the Black Edition renaissance and Steam promotions, it still hasn't reached the popularity levels of its predecessors. Do you think the Unreal Tournament franchise still has a future on the PC? Any chance we see a different style of shooter from Epic? More contemporary combat perhaps?
If any of my questions are selected, don't worry about the T-shirt, please give it to someone else who will appreciate it more, thanks!

I have one and only question which I wish I could ask every developer and publisher..... Does Epic games plan on supporting the PC gaming community either through openness or giving them a higher quality product? Many of us here in the EVGA forums spend a hell of a lot of money on graphics hardware only to get screwed over with console ports! Will Epic continue to be different like they do with embracing open standards like OpenGl which a console will never have the common sense of embracing due to Microsoft pulling strings? If we could get you flipping the microsoft logo the bird that would get you street cred for life :)
