Just wondering about those that have added the EVGA GTX 1080/1070 Hybrid Waterblock Cooler (400-HY-5188-B1) to their 1080 or 1070 FTW.  Have you had any issues at all with the VRM or VRAM overheating or does the waterblock eliminate all those issues.

Just wondering because I am considering getting the kit for my FTW 1080.   I haven't seen anyone talking about the performance -pros/cons of adding this kit.

The only downside I see are a few reviews with complaints about the fan not being PWM controlled, so it runs at full speed 24/7 and is a tad noisy.  Is this true?  If the fan is the only issue, that could be fixed easily by swapping it out with a Notua PWM fan, so I guess I'm more interested if this card is free of all the heat related woes of the regular ACX 3.0 cards.

Thanks in advance.

I asked Tech Support about the fan not being able to be controlled and suggested that I might run the fan off a MB Cha_Fan connector to gain control over it. They told me that would be an acceptable solution. So its just a matter of running a wire into/under the shroud to power it.
(The fan itself is/has a 4 wire connector but it is the pump that is only a 2 wire power connector that runs at a constant speed, but as you know both the fan and pump run off the same power connector off the card. I thought about replacing the fan too but I wasn't sure if the mounting screws on the heat sink would be universal so came  up with the wiring it to the MB solution instead.)

the fan on the radiator runs full speed.

there is a dedicated heatsink and fan for the vrm mosfets. this fan you can control. you will want to modify the fan curve as the temperature will only hit about 50c max depending on your clock.

i also ran the wire for the fan out the back of the card so i could route it through the case. put a little notch in the shroud. looks much nicer that way i think.

Any reason why you chose to run  the wire out that side instead of where the tubes come out?

this way i can run the wire back through the rubber grommets of my case and up to the radiator location.

    no messy wire.

Did you find that the pad on the underside of the heatsink made good contact with the mosfets?

I did a cooler swap for my 1070 with the Hybrid. And yes, the stock fans run at full speed all the time. Tried plugging it in a fan header on my mobo and I still couldn't control it. I just swapped them with a Phanteks fan. But I noticed that I have to run those at a pretty high fan speed to match the cooling of the stock fans. At least the trade-off is that I can control the fans so it won't run full speed at idle.

yes, put the heatsink on once and then took it off. contact with the thermal pads was great.

So mounting the Phnateks was ok to the heatsink? Screws all lined up ok? Would all fans be able to mount to that heatsink?

Yeah, it all lined up perfectly. You have to use the same washers and screws the stock fan used though, so you won't screw it in too deep. This is fine if you're gonna mount the fan towards the outside of your case. I also recommend getting some rubber mounts or grommets, as the radiator for my particular unit vibrates from time to time.

If your motherboard is out of fan plugs or you just want to add a quieter fan, you can add an inline low noise adapter that will run whichever fan at a quiet speed. Many fans come with them. I use Tt Riing series and I have a bowl full of LND's.

UmmI think we are talking about 2 different things here.
Are you talking about the rad fan? Or the heatsink fan on the card?

I was under the impression that you can control the fan on the card.  It's the fan on the radiator that runs at full throttle.  Is this not correct?

yeah, you control the fan on the card the stock fan for the watercooler can't be controlled unless you connect it to your board from what I know or get change the fan on the water cooler for a quieter one. It can be unscrewed from the watercooler easy, just make sure if you replace the fan that it's a good fan and not just mostly quiet. I have the pre-built 1080 ftw hybrid, so I guess the kit would be almost 100% to it. You will be so happy down the line because of the common heating issue but with this it never really goes above 50c and sticks around this or bellow when gaming.

the reply i got from EVGA

We generally recommend keeping the blower fan running at 40% or higher; the radiator fan will run full speed unless connected to a fan controller. If you have any other questions, please let us know.
