Anyone have any experience with gsync monitors? Dual monitor setups? EVGA techs?

Right now I run a pair of 6 year old 1080p acer monitors and one of them is starting to fail. Weird faint light lines running horizontal across the middle. Troubleshooted the gpu and wires, def the monitor. ANYWAYS, I was looking at getting a gsync monitor to put an end to needing vsync to kill tearing, with the added bonus of being 3d vision capable down the road if i so choose. Only catch is that I'm very used to dual screens so I'd need two. Pricey. It occured to me that the XL2420G and XL2420Z are basically identical except one has a hybrid video scaler to support Benq's classic engine and Gsync with the press of a button. Has anyone used a mixed setup like this? Can a gsync monitor coexist with a non-gsync monitor that is an otherwise identical panel? It's myunderstanding that gsync only becomes a factor when a game runs fullscreen so if I can run this mixed setup and shave about 300 bucks it would be perfect. I asked Benq and they said they havent tested it, but on paper image quality should be identical. I figured Id see if anyone has a personal experience.

    Hello devsfan1830,

It just so happens that I do run a dual monitor set up like the one you looking at myself.  I have a GTX 780 Classified, on a Z77 motherboard with a 3770K clocked at 4.2 with 8GBs of DDR3 1600.  The monitors are both 27 inches displays, my secondary one is a standard 1920x1080 @ 60HZ nothing fancy.  My main is a Acer XB270H 144Hz @ 1920x1080 thats G-Sync and 3D ready.

The primary Acer monitor;  is for lack of better word, awesome!  Right off the bat when it was set up, I put it at 144Hz, which did give a warning for games, which need to be played at full screen to take advantage of G-Sync.  No issues with any type of stuttering, lag, crashes, or issues of any kind when playing games or movies.  All games that I've tried will stick at the 144hz mark with no problem.

The secondary 1080P @ 60Hz monitor; was my primary bofore the Gsync one.  Never had any issues with it prior to adding the 2nd monitor.  But one thing I have noticed, is video quality stutters/waves/distorsions on it when I have a game running on the the Gsync monitor.  Since I will usually play a game at the same time have netflix or a movie playing on this 2nd monitor, it is very apparent.  If your just streaming music from pandora or spotify, on that 2nd monitor there are no issues, I've only really seen issues with movies.  Be it in full screen or windowed mode.

Though this is just my own experience and others may have no issues at all.  Now one thing to note, that my system is a Z77 running a 780.  These issues may not exsist if you are running a newer mb/processer with a 900 seires GPU.  I am in the process of upgrading to the X99 platform with a 980, and at that point will retest this and see if the troubles with the secondary monitor still exsist.

Depening on your setup, the BenQ monitors you are looking at may or may not have any issues.  I would suggest checking out reviews on the Gsync monitor and checking out their forums.

@devsfan1830; I'm not sure if your doubt is if the gsync + non-gsync are compatible to work within a OS environment, or if you plan to dual screen games with it.

If your concern is if they'll be compatible for desktop use, I can confirm (as Eddie mentioned) that it won't be a problem. I have a multimonitor setup with the Asus ROG Swift as my main screen, and a 1080p Benq on the side, with then my 55" TV connected as well. I never had any issues either on desktop use or single screen gaming. But I can't recall having tried "stereo monitor" with it since the Switf has a different resolution than the other two.

Thanks a lot for the info. I actually have a z77 and an OC'd 3770K as well. I just have a 980 SC instead. Some folks over at Overclock.net said I should have no problems at all. Anywhere else I've seen issues is with people that for some reason run fullscreen windowed. I've never needed to multitask when playing a game. The ones i'm looking at are apparently identical in every way except for gsync. So video quality and refresh rate are identical. Both are 3d vision capable. Perhaps your video issues on the second display has something to do with being fixed at 60Hz? I've had issues playing VLC video on secondary monitors. Throws errors with directX when I launch a game. Perhaps thats something too. Usually the second screen is either blank desktop or has a browser window with Battlelog open for a full screen live bf4 map. Ultimately as long as Gsync works fine, and my pc doesnt go on some weird crash spree when I plug em both in I'll be happy.

Yeah im just wondering about stablity in the OS environment and single screen gaming. As far as I know, dual screen spanning isn't even possible or useful. I think the only game that I have thats dual screen would be the supreme commander series which I havent played in years and in that case I can just toggle gsync off if its an issue.

I currently have 2 Benq XL2420Z's and I am very pleased with them. If you decide to get one of these get it from either Newegg or Amazon. That way you are sure to get one that has version 2 firmware installed. With a little bit of tweaking they are amazing. Games look like they are running on a CRT monitor (smoothness, vertically no blur). This site is a good resource as well if you decide to go this route: www.blurbusters.com

Yeah i see that all over the place, but i dont see what difference that makes. it seems like all that does is make it play nice with a benchmark tool. plus if im using gsync on my primary then that does nothing for me and gsync is its own scaler. benq doesnt do firmware for that module, its nvidias.

I was speaking solely of the BenQ XL2420Z not Nvidia's G-Sync concerning the firmware version. I'm not sure what you mean by benchmark tool. The utility on the Blurbusters site helps to reduce or nearly eliminate blurring associated with LCD monitors. And it works. If you like G-Sync, by all means go for it, I was just giving a option to think about. The Benq's are great. I don't have any tearing, motion blur while gaming. Maybe I just read your post wrong.

oh ok nevermind. thanks. i thought the blurbusters was a benchmark tool or something for some reason. i misunderstood. im pretty sold on gsync so far though. from what inunderstand it kills tearing and also judder you get from the gpu outpacing the monitor

With the benq 2420G/Z, does it have a display port cable in the box? How long is it?

I checked both monitors on the Newegg site, by just looking at the images of what is included in the box.  For the BenQ XL2420G, it does have a Displayport, and the monitors does show that it comes with a Display port cable.  If its anything like the one that came with my Acer monitor, it would be about 4-6 feet in length.
The BenQ XL2420Z monitor on the other had does not show a Displayport cable in the pictures, but the monitor itself does have a DisplayPort.  You would probably have to buy your own DisplayPort cable for this monitor.

    I have 1 Asus PG278Q 1440p GSync and 2 Asus PB278 1440p monitors.

I game on the Gsync in the middle of the two other monitors, works great.

I did not think the Gsync would be worth the $$ and bought it with the complete intention of returning it, but I love it and anyone who wants it will need to pry it from my dead cold hands.

We will have to wait on DP 1.3 monitors and who knows if they are going to add any additional things that the chip
    will be required for.

Bit of an update. I've since gone and bought the two screens (XL2420G and XL2420Z) and so far like everyone else says, the gsync is great. Butter smooth framerate. I love this thing. Both in terms of image color quality are VERY different but after a bit of fiddling with both the monitor settings and the Nvidia control panel color settings I'v achieved nearly matched quality and they look fantastic. The difference must be caused by the video engine difference between them because supposedly they have identical panels.

Also, I have a theory on that netflix flickering issue you describe as Ive seen it a bit myself. Both screens are set to 144Hz. When launching a game some of them not only list resolution but refresh rate. In my case, I had youtube flickering when the screens its running on is as 144, but the game is momentarily set to a different refresh rate before I correct it. I suspect the same is for your reverse case. You have a video on a screen set to 60Hz while your main runs at a higher refresh rate. For whatever reason, but probbaly due to the way GPUs handle dual screens. This mismatch results in what you descrbe. I think the only solution would be to get a secondary 144Hz monitor. Set them both to 144Hz in the windows monitor panel and then make sure your game is set to 144Hz if there is an option. On a related note, while Gsync is set on in the nvidia control panel to ovverride vsync. I suggest shutting it off in every game as well as setting to 144hz if the option is there or removing any framerate caps. While gsync still works, any setting under 144Hz appears to cap your framerate. So it'll likely still eliminate tearing but you lose the higher framerates. I saw this in Hitman:Absolution. I had Vsync off, with gsync on globally, but still set to 60Hz assuming it didnt matter. The bench was pegged at 60. Upped it to 144Hz and it was free to vary above 60. Both cases no tearing when framerate dipped.
