I think you'll need to wait for a Ti (or similar) version of the 980 for that.

I found the my single 780Ti SC'd model is pretty close in performance to my two 670 FTW cards I had in SLI.

780Ti  >>  http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/8334020
670 FTW's  >>  http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7355186

The graphics score was a bit higher with the two 670's, but gaming wise, they seem pretty equal.  In some games the single card seems to run things better (smoother) than the SLI'd cards.

That's about what I figured, and since we're talking 680s for the OP the difference should be even smaller? In either case it seems like a single 980 would be more of a lateral move other than for noise and heat.

If you have 2gb cards, I think the 980 would be an improvement on anything that can use the RAM, huge power savings on the 980 as well.
If you are overclock savy, you can get some solid gains form the classy if you are willing to really push it.
Otherwise I agree with Mistermister, and you will need to wait for the next big card to come out.

My 980 beats my 680 SLI score in Firestrike but lost some in 3DMark11. Overall gaming is about the same. Less noise, less headaches. More vram and less stuttering.

Interesting you mention this. My SLI 970s crush Firestrike but are somewhat lackluster when running 3DM11. A DX issue perhaps?

Probably driver issues. The 680 really stunk when it was first released and it took about 6 months before the drivers caught up with the newer technology.

NVIDIA improve nice that cards if your GTX980 beat GTX680 SLI.

GTX-680 SLI with boost clocks at 1245 MHz. vs single GTX-980 with boost clock of 1500 MHz:
1)Firestrike: http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/3213035/fs/3195563
2)3DMark11: http://www.3dmark.com/compare/3dm11/8960116/3dm11/8948343

980 wins in Firestike score but overall the 680 SLI has higher FPS.

A classified GTX 980 would do the trick I believe (if you don't want to overclock a video card yourself).

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA
