Hey gang,
As I have discovered in another thread, my older WD external usb2 hard drive is starting to fail - at least the power supply where it plugs into the drive is flaky, causing it to not always be recognized in windows.

As it is older and I could use a larger external drive anyway ( I use it for system images), I am going to go ahead and get a new one. I plan on getting a USB3 external  drive this time for the better data transfer rates.
I currently have my USB3 and eSata ports disabled in the bios for my X-79 Dark , as I did not use them.
Are there any issues using USB3 on the Dark? Seems like I recall maybe there were at some point, but my memory ain't as good as it used to be either. Also does eSata need to be enabled when having USB3 enabled, or does it matter?

Thanks for any feedback,

Don

I don't recall if eSATA needed to be enabled for anything or not, but simple trial & error will answer that for you.  As far as issue's with USB 3.0, I never booted anything from a 3.0 port, but I used flash drives in them after Windows was loaded with no problems.

Make sure you load the driver for 3.0 as it's a seperate driver unlike USB 2.0 and you should be good to go...  Here's the latest driver on EVGA's support site  >> http://cdn.evga.com/driver/X79-Asmedia_USB3.0.zip

I have a 6TB MyBook plugged into the USB3 ports on my Dark, zero issues.  I have used several of my USB3's for different things, they just work.  It was the FTW's and I think Classified that had USB3 problems early on in the X79 run, but that was largely fixed.

I believe disabling the Marvell SATA ports will also disable the USB 3.0 ports. Known issue.

That may have been what I was remembering, I seemed to recall there was something if disabled would affect the USB3 ports.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback!

I will Test that now, I do have the Marvell E-SATA Disabled.
With this Disabled and I also have Lan 2 Disabled and all my USB 3.0 Ports work.

This "something if disabled would affect the USB3 ports." is an know on the X99 Motherboard.
I can test this as well if you would like.

Well I finally got my USB 3 external hard drive, a WD 3TB  MyBook.
I enabled the USB3 rear ports on the X-79 Dark, all working well.

My goodness, can't believe it took me this long to join the USB3 club. Wow what a difference, used to be in took me about an hour and 20 minutes to run a complete system image, now utilizing USB3 it takes all of about 18 minutes!
What a difference, very glad I got this drive.
