Just wondering if anyone is hanging on to their X58 systems and dropping in an EVGA FE 1080.  I'm picking one up when I can.  Still on X58 with a W3690

Thanks

Didn't ask if it would work.  I understand what you wrote there but lol could you please explain "how it would p
souls not be bad if you oc the cpu."  lol **** are you typing?

I have an X58 system with an i7-920 cpu and a GTX 1080 SC.
    It is working fine.
    No issues so far.

    Thanks

I just put an EVGA 1080 SC in my machine, which runs a Xeon 5680 (6-core, 3.33GHz) on an MSI Big Bang X-Power X58 motherboard. It rocks.

I would probably pick up at most 2-5 fps in the games I play by upgrading to a "modern" cpu. Granted, I'll still probably do it fairly soon, but this Xeon 5680 is still chugging along nicely.

    I'm on an i7 970 @ 4.2ghz. X58 Classified 3. No issues and pretty decent scores.

I find that interesting. What are your RAM timings if you don't mind me asking? You're running your cpu just a tad higher than mine (4.19 ghz vs 4.13 ghz), your 1080 base clock appears to be the same, and your gpu memory bus is clocked slightly higher than mine (1,377 MHz vs 1,339 MHz). This is about 1.5% higher cpu, 2.8% higher gpu memory clock, and the same generation of cpu, same cache size, etc. I'm curious what's making up the difference in our overall performance in the benchmark.

Sorry for the late reply. I believe I'm at 11-11-11-28. I'll have to check when I get home. These Dominator modules are supposed to run at CS9 but don't like it at 2000mhz so I just loosened up the timings. Do you have a link to your Firestrike score to compare? I can't think of anything special about my system.

I've been super happy with this 970 i7 though. I still don't have any evidence of a bottleneck when using this 1080. GPU load is always at 100% and CPU load never goes about 30%

Very interesting. Our systems are very closely matched. I'm currently running my Xeon 5680 at 4125 MHz. I typically have my 1080 SC running with +100/+350 settings, but for this I nudged it up to +110/+375. I haven't experimented to see what would be a max clock for my card, but it's run dozens or scores of hours at +100/+350 in games and some benchmarks.

    Here's my Firestrike score:
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9512304

Your cpu is running only like 60 MHz faster than mine, which is about 1.5%, but your physics score is 3% higher, so I'm still curious what's giving you the narrow advantage in both physics and graphics score. I'm betting it's RAM speed. Your running at 2094 MHz while mine was running only at 1500 MHz, albeit it with more aggressive timings.

I'll run the FireStrike Ultra and Time Spy again and post those results. I'll also have to convert this overclock from one derived automatically by MSI's OC Genie (I just push a button on the mobo and the mobo figures out its own overclock) to a manual one. I probably won't crank the cpu much higher, but I'd like to play with the RAM some more and see if I can match your speed.

It's extremely satisfying to see how effective these 6-year old Westmere chips still are. I've tried guesstimating based on various benchmarks and whatnot, and I think upgrading to a modern cpu would only net maybe 2-4 fps in the games I play. I'll still probably do it, but for now this machine is running great.

Yes, they're holding up well. Sure, in the artificial benchmarks the modern cpus beat ours on cpu tests and whatnot by 30-45% or whatever, but in actual games, based on benchmarks I've looked at carefully I honestly think they'd only gain a few fps. These cpus we have can still totally support a 1080, which is awesome.
