I just got my new Z97 Classified from Amazon and picked up my 4790k from MC today for $270...yes $279 not $340 like everyone is selling it for. MC is 15 min from me :-) I have the new hardware installed and running but have yet to do any testing with my sim racing or benchmarks. With that said, I want to OC the cpu as I had it done with my 3770k and Z77 Sabertooth at 4.6ghz and it run as stable as stock clocks and was fast. I read where this combo can do 4.8ghz stable. I am confused a little with this EVGA Bios. If anyone can steer me right on Bios settings for an OC I would be grateful. Thanks, R

Lol, what Bios guide ?! This is the only MB I have ever bought that come with no full guide to the bios etc. All it come with is how to install hardware and connect wires...and that is very limited.

Let us know how you fare with your testing. I keep reading that 5Ghz is not easy to get stable @ 4c/8t with acceptable voltage/temps.

High overclocking stability is determined by a number of factors such as stability of the PSU, correct O/C and memory settings, etc. I'm interested if anyone is able to maintain a good 4.8 or higher overclock with relative ease.

I was running my 3770k @4.6gHz with Vcore@1.28v on an Asus Z77 Sabertooth with an EVGA 780ti stable, never crashed etc. and my temps never went above 62 C (water cooled). So, I am hoping to run this setup (4790k and Z97 Classified) at 4.8gHz(water cooled) stable. I also run a Supernova 1300w

Nice let us know, I'm undecided between the EVGA Z97 FTW or the GB-Z97 Gaming 7. I've seen some solid reviews for the Gigabyte, but none for the EVGA.

Nope. There are only a few silicon lottery winners with this chip. Gone through hundreds of post and replies today. 4.7 on water seems to be the high end, less the very few chosen ones. Im at 4.5 stable using 1.4 on a 4770K, im not willing to gamble yet on a 4790K for a few tenths increase.

I am surprised that there are so few reviews as well. These are the only two reviews for it so far: http://www.overclockers.com/evga-z97-classified-motherboard-review "From aesthetics to performance, EVGA seems to have checked all the right boxes with the Z97 Classified. If you’re considering a jump into the Z97 platform, you’ll definitely want to keep this motherboard on your shortlist. It’s an easy call this time around, Overclockers approved!" http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Motherboards/EVGA-Z97-Classified-Motherboard-Review "StrengthsStock and overclocking performance Board layout and design Board aesthetics CPU socket layout and spacing UEFI BIOS design and usability CMOS battery placement Quality of integrated Creative Labs Core3D chipset and audio subsystem design WeaknessesLack of accessible PCI-Express x1 slot with primary PCI-Express x16 slot occupied Lack of SATA-Express ports Inclusion of mSATA port instead of 10Gbps-capable M.2 port Lack of performance with drives connected to Marvell controlled SATA / mSATA ports Immaturity of BIOS implementation and affects on performance/overclocking Lack of in-depth board feature information in included manuals" It seems the default bios has some performance issues but the latest one works just fine, according to this review. During the Intel event earlier this month where they officially unveiled the 4790k the overclockers were all using the Z97 Classified and they all seemed to like it very much.

interesting.. i've been following this topic (and other on the web) and so far it seems no one can go beyond 3.7GHz on that 4790K... and keep it 100% stable! i dunno why they unlocked the multiplier on this K version if it oc's SO badly. it is a nice upgrade from my C2Q Q9450 i admit it but... brings a bitter taste cause i was thinking in pushing it around 5Ghz and stay there. i dunno why Intel bragged about 5GHz! marketing strategy i think... shame only a +300Mhz gain... that's nothing.. will there be another revision of this CPU? or will Intel stop at this one? not a BAD CPU i admit but.. meh.... i've heard of broadwell 14nm cpu's.. but.. thats only for Xmas time i think..

What you will find with this 4790K is that it runs VERY hot under full load. Even on water Anyone not reporting over 90C at 1.3v is not running the latest prime95 on small. Mine idles at 28C and will shoot to 99C on water instantly at 1.325v. Mine games at 57C ish That is why most are limited to 4.7-4.8 These chips just cannot handle 1.4v unless you have them on ice water or L2. SO the trick is to delid and you can only use the liquid metal tim CLP and or CLU between the IHS and die. Use nail polish on the vrm's to protect them. Do not delid with normal tim. The new tim is pretty good and anything else used will not bring temps down.

yep they wil run stable at higher temps mine is stable at 4.8 and games all day, but still shoots up to 99C on prime95 smalls Ive heard these chips throw another 0.1 v with stress testing.

Yeah the WB is right on the cpu die with liquid metal (coollab liquid ultra) in between the die and the WB, I'm using EK's PreciseMount Add-on Naked Ivy to hold the block on the die. I don't see much of a risk right now, might be an issue when I try to remove the block a year or so down the line, but I don't know.

Your using the right Tim. So far nothing works as good as coollabs U or P Which version of prime are you using? The later versions do not have all the actions turned on. Congrats, good job. I have to run 1.325 delidded. My ultra will be here Thursday and can use a proper tim.

I'm thinking about delid my 4770K too. What's the best TIM? I'm not sure if it's worthy or not. I cannot get my CPU pass 4.4Ghz no matter what voltage I add on MSI z87 power max SP board.

I believe I tested using 28.5 but I'm not 100% sure, I'll check when I get home and get back to you. I was at high 80's before my delid using IC Diamond, I didn't like that one bit and deled, now I'm a happy camper. Coollaboratory Liquid Pro/Ultra is one of if not the best TIM for bare die (delid) application. I don't have a heat spreader installed anymore, but I wouldn't use CLP/CLU between the heat spreader and block/cooler. If you keep the heat spreader, I would suggest using CLP/CLU between the die and the heat spreader and whatever other TIM you like best between the heat spreader and your block/cooler.
