I'm assuming this was the Orbital Sciences unmanned cargo mission to ISS from Wallops?

WOW , I bet that lit up "the neighborhood". I'm wondering how often they are launching for resupply?

It really is amazing that no one was hurt.  It will be interesting to see what they determine to be the cause of the accident.  I know that the original launch was delayed due to a boat being in the area, and I wonder if that had something to do with it.  Not that the boat or anyone on it had anything to do with the explosion, but I wonder if the delay caused a backup system to fail or start early.

Based on what I saw visually it looks like a massive engine failure just after liftoff.

It's what they get for using surplus Soviet engines actually built in the 1960's and retooled in the Ukraine. You get what you pay for.

Can't or won't? You contracted to Aerojet or something?

The first stage engines are modified Soviet NK-33 rocket engines. They were built in the 60's for the Soviet space race to the moon. They've been further modified by Aerojet to what they call an AJ-26 rocket engine. It's 60's and 70's Soviet surplus that changed hands several times and was further modified. It's dead end tech. Russia isn't making them anymore and there were only 36 of them to begin with. Dead end surplus tech that blew up IMHO.

This is an unfortunate event.  It took a year to gather the supplies that burned up during that launch.  Not sure when that stuff can be put back.  I do not fault the Soviet rockets but I do fault the commercial enterprise that ran this operation that thought of only saving money rather than what was the most appropriate tech necessary to make this a sure launch.  I surely bet their insurance costs have just gotten much higher in the atmosphere than the rocket ever did.    I not think a commercial vendor is ready for space.  Too much cost cutting and corner cutting for me.  I hope we learn our lesson and go back to the great track record NASA had because they cared and wanted it to go right.

Why try ti disprove Brad? He personally built those Soviet Engines back in the 60's.
